I like your video and i would like to add a couple of points that may help. I am a time served fitter and turner but left the trade to work for SecoTools in New Zealand. The introduction of carbide insert part off tools was a great move forward in parting. The big secret in these is the chip breaker. This not only gives a bit of positive cutting action but also pulls the chip inward to reduce the chip width. I suggest you take a cut and measure the chip and compare it to the groove width. Now HSS tools. You need side clearance for it to operate but if you grind too much top rake the width of the point is less that the top section and you have the effect of trying to push a tapered tool into the work causing huge problems with chatter and possible breakage. I hope this helps. Cheers Ian

Great video. Big lathe or small lathe, the principles you outlined are applicable to both. An additional thing I found is that a full profile parting off tool blank is intended for end grinding only. These blanks have an additional profile on top of the blade. These tools require a holder which imparts a top rake. If used on a standard blade holder there is no top rake. I bought a tool holder for a much larger tool post. This allowed me to machine the holder to rock it back to give an appropriate angle. Cheers.

Thanks ever so much for this video , I am a beginner and I’ve had lots of problems parting off . I have a small carbide insert parting too but the tip keeps separating from the tool.

Sounds like it is faulty if the tip keeps coming out, try a different one, if it keeps snapping off then you are driving it to hard 🙂👍

Yes I agree. I run a Boxford and a M300 and even on the bigger machine parting can be disastrous. I mainly used tipped tools on the 300 and high speed on the Boxford but had a big bang on that only last week. I’ve just bought a HSS parting holder from Arc Eurotrade which I’m going to have a go with. Interesting video, especially regarding tightening things up, I’ll definitely look at that before I have another go. Thank you!
