Fabrication is one of my favorite things to do, from copying something I have seen or making something I need. This fireplace log rest has worn out and I can't get a new one so I'll be making a new one out of some rebar I have in the shop. :)

I've never been much of a consumer. I fix everything I can and if I can't fix it, or make a part to fix it, I salvage everything I can out of it before throwing it away. :)

Well, you just saved me $18000! Thanks :) So I just watched your video "Extra Rafter Supports to Help Hold Our Longer Rafters" and I was impressed with your idea of installing horizontal eave braces to strengthen the long overhangs. I will be building a small cabin soon and the roof overhangs at the eaves will be 42" deep. The engineer wanted to install 6 x 12 timber beams (30' long) 6" back from the edge of the eaves with diagonal timber braces coming from the beam down to the exterior cabin walls. The beams, braces, wall reinforcement and all the special metal connection brackets were going to cost almost $18000 but I showed him your video and now we're doing the same thing you did to help support the overhangs. It should cost about $1000 for the wood and labor. Thanks so much! All the best!

I'm currently enjoying your house build series. In the playlist, you forgot to include the video for the second floor support posts. Two things I was wondering: 1. Did you ever think to join the two pieces of the ridge beam with a scarf joint? 2. Did you think of using an engineered metal post to ridge beam connector instead of bolting wood to wood?

The ridge beam would never be seen but I did think about using a scarf joint on the 6x12 that supports the 4x8 floor joists but it was a thought after I picked the beams up and they weren't long enough. As far as the connections I had to go off the engineered house plans unless I wanted to have the engineer revise the plans and wait for all that. I do hope you enjoy the rest of the video in that play list and as always thanks for watching. :)

The problems the type of cast iron. I've got a Wonder Wood Stove rated for coal or wood. I burn wood the stove is 20 yrs old the grates are still good.

It surprises me that this stove would have a cheap piece of cast iron in it because its a pretty expensive stove, but then again maybe thats how they make higher profits. Either way, this piece was easy enough to make and will hopefully last longer.:)

Great use of rebar. I like your rod bender and almost fast forwarded to see what you were making. I did not. As an aside I was wondering why you are using gas bottles. Fluxcore will do the job and negate the need for renting and refilling Gas bottles for your Mig.

I have flux core wire but only use it when I cant use solid wire and gas. For most of my projects I like to see a cleaner weld. :)

I have a old water cooled Miller Tig in my shop I bought years ago. That said, there are 200 amp Inverter lift Tigs you can buy on Amazon for $280. I have one of those too. This Yeswelder 205DS model is for steel Tig welding, Mig and Arc welding. Even comes with a foot pedal. Very portable and it is dual voltage.
