Did you miss PARwise from ITC ReefCulture at @Aquashella!? No worries, Craig is here to explain it in depth! PARwise is not just a par meter, it's so much more... Check it out!

I assume you have to leave your laptop or phone sitting on the top of your tank for the entire photo period to get the Dli.

You do - to do it properly! You can get USB-C adaptors that allow for an extra USB-A port and a USB-C so you can plug your charger in and a PARwise at the same time, if doing it on a mobile device. This may not work on every android device - depends on the manufacturer. It works on my Google Pixel and also a low cost 10" Honor tablet, but not a Kindle Fire 7 for example.

A couple of observations. 1. ITC doesn't make any statements regarding spectral or PAR accuracy. 2. The spectral graph is overly-vague. You could have a 450nm and 465nm LED running and still see a single peak. As far as PAR, I've seen comparisons where the PARwise is 25% different than measurements from quality PAR meters. It's nothing more useful than a toy.

Appreciate the input Darryl! PARwise is a light meter than can read spectrum. But it's not a 'spectrometer'. Spectrum: It's not a full blown spectrometer with single nm resolution. It's also not $1000's of dollars! But it is absolutely good enough to set your lights up with and change settings. If you absolutely need to know whether your manufacturer has sent you LED's that peak at the desired/ advertised wavelength or falls within their production tolerance range - then you need a quality lab spectrometer and to do it properly, you're in the $1000's. We whole heartedly recommend Ocean Insight or Jeti brands of spectrometer if that's what you want - check them out. That granular resolution isn't what the spectrum side is about - but that's also why the cost is vastly different. We are however able to bring quality spectral data for those with adjustable spectrum lights can change to suit the needs to the tank and have a base of reference and compare with one another. The majority of us really don't need to know the ultra fine detail - But of course there are some that will, and that's awesome - there is gear out there that will do that! PAR accuracy - Tested! We've popped a video on our channel comparing accuracy of measurements across the spectrum, using 2 of the same PAR meter and another from the same brand. The variances can be large - due to their single point in air calibration. We calibrate in air too - but we have a multipoint calibration, calibrating light levels at many points across the spectrum, so when the spectrum is different from the calibrated point, you still get a faithful result. The obvious danger is if people reference the one brand and their light measurement - it truly matters what model version was used because, they all vary from each other and vary between models. PARwise's spectral and PAR response is super tight across the spectrum so if you're sharing a PARwise result - you know if someone else uses it, or you use it yourself with a PARwise - you're going to get a faithful representation when measured. Furthermore - axis measurements are critical when comparing meters because of sensor position within the unit itself it can make a reasonable % difference - add that on top of spectral and device to device variances (demonstrated on our channel) thrown in - you've got a hell of a soup of wonky measurements all over the place. PARwise is tight and true across the spectrum regardless of the input type. When it comes to immersion correction factor - we've run the scientific and published math on how to do so vs the construction of the meter and retested and we are absolutely sure that if you measure with PARwise, you're getting a a true accurate underwater measurement. We've also tested the math against most of the major competitors to ensure that what WE give is the right and an true to science result, even if we do go against the grain! We could have just copied and calibrated to 'the big common brand' but it's not the right thing to do and device to device variance is of course a consideration - which one! It's clearly in our interest to make sure this as spot on as possible because we are a small aquatics company with a big heart towards and in marine biology and we understand that accuracy, and honesty matters - especially for the future of the product and brand. I hope this goes some way to answer your comment. Thanks for reading thus far. All the best Craig.

@@itcreefculture It has no true value to a reefing hobbyist. Period.

Yes, your web site calls it a "Spectrum analyser". Spin it with as much jargon as you want, but it's ineffective for aquarium use and more like an expensive toy. It'll be the one item that will bring your reputation down.@@itcreefculture

It works just fine. But go ahead and spend that 250 dollars more for something that's only calibrated to one point on the spectrum. This is calibrated in multiple. And my coral coloration and growth are the anecdotal proof I need. @@darrylchase3688
