Thanks for posting this, you just saved me hours, changed tensioner by just removing the fan pulley allen bolt and then the nut on the rear of the tensioner. No need to remove the rad or anything else!

The bolt on the front of the tensioner is left hand thread...the clutch fan has to come out to remove the tensioner..if you take the pulley off the tensioner you could of put an oil filter strap around the fan clutch pulley to hold while you undone the bolt behind...its possible the alternator clutch pulley is the reason you had a noisy belt

@@lozl I'm in a bit of a bind, maybe you have an advice. When this type of tensioner is replaced, there's a way to set the tension by blocking the rotation with a shim (there's a hole on the tensioner) and then turning the tensioner to the desired position, but I forgot how it's done. Can't find the reference video anymore. Have you figured it out or did you just bolt the new one in place as is? It's incredibly difficult to search for because the AHH engine is much less common than the AFN, which has a different tensioner.

@@mikemetallia this was a while ago, but as I remember it could o ly go in one way, the tension was just set with the spring. I remember a hole in the casting on the engine and a peg sticking out the back of the tensioner and it simply lined up in here. Setting the tension sounds more like a Cambelt procedure.??

Fan bolt is NORMAL THREAD, just normal CW thread. If doesn't want to come just use brake fluid or some rust removing product.

I got to do this myself, had the squeaking, so changed the belt with no luck, then the alternator stopped working, so I changed that, and only after that I noticed the belt was a bit loose, leaving me to think it had to be the belt tensioner. Has anyone done this with the front of the car still on? Also thanks for the video as I now know how to do the job without guessing and pulling everything to bits.

Right a quick update as I done the job today. I removed the belt using a spanner on the tensioner counter clockwise. Then an allen key on the AC tensioner to remove that belt. Then I removed the nut on the back of the main belt tensioner behind the alternator/under towards the middle of the engine, I found the fan pulley had some holes in the front between the fan and the pulley that my grinder spanner fitted into to stop it spinning as I was unable to get the mole grips to grip. I then undone the bolt from behind/under the alternator. Pulled the fan towards the radiator giving me the space to remove the old tensioner and fit the new one. It was then just a matter of doing it all in reverse. Took me about 2 hours but I’m sure it can be done much quicker without rain, wind and searching for something to fit in the pulley holes when the mole grips kept slipping. Also a note to make things easier, Jack the front of the car up as I find it very tight to get to the AC tensioner other wise.

@@RichyG_YT Thanks for the update you helped me a lot, I need to do this job too, but I wasn't sure can I do it with everything in place on the car, well thanks to you now I know.

Hi Laurence. Great video, thanks a lot for sharing. I've got the same problem with my Audi. Please can you share how did you remove the tensioner? How many bolts are there and where can I find them? I'm hoping to do it without removing the whole front (radiator etc.) Thanks
@lozl
@lozl 5 жыл бұрын
Its just a single nut holding it on, you get to ot from behind the alternator, you can't see it, but you can feel it if you put you hand round the back of the structure that holds the alternator. I forget the size of it but it is just a single nut. I think the fan has come.off first to get to it as in the video

@@lozl fantastic, thanks a lot for quick reply. Yeh, I had to take the fan out first which is not an easy task as I wasn't taking the whole of the front of. Removed the tentioner and will be shopping for a new one tomorrow. Fingers crossed some will be open on Sunday :) Once again, thanks a lot for sharing the video, it helped me a great deal!

Hello, I have the same problem with my Audi A6 avant mod. 2000. I did not know that there is a bolt on the back side, so that I have more space to replace the old belt tensioner. But the problem now is that the torx screw belongs to tensioner is stripped and stuck. Do you have some tips on how to remove it?
@lozl
@lozl 4 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I don't really. I guess you'll have to destroy it from the front side to the point that the broken bolt will then come out the back. Good luck
