Totally agree that passive income is often oversold. You've got to put in the hours in advance and reap the rewards later! It also needs maintenance or it doesn't last :) Great video!

I disagree. If you are younger, it is oversold, but if you work for 20 years and amass 7 figures, streams of passive income can get you a six figure income for doing nothing. Think of it like combining rental property income, crowdfunding platforms like Fundrise, dividend stocks (and a pension or IRA if you are retired) 100k plus passive income is very attainable. I am living proof.

I didn't quite follow. How does the 'six figure income for doing nothing' happen?

Amen brotha!! One algorithm change, or competitor could 100% screw up your 'Passive income' so you have to always stay on top of things and continue to grow. And yeah I also get way t0o freakin bored when I take too much time not growing my business or by learning somthing. Great content man!!

I casually came across some of your video even before start thinking: “maybe, even if I'm 32, I can make it”, and still watching you so gladly, definitely a big source of positive vibes and motivation. Big hugs from Italy Chris!

Oh yeah, you definitely have to put in the work up front! But I don’t think the goal of someone who is building passive income is to necessarily stop working immediately. In fact, people who are successful at it are often enterprising and find themselves wanting to do it again - I mean, build up more “passive” income streams.

Why do people work? 99% of the time is to get money. There is no point in working if you have money or you can generate money without working. There is more in life than just spending it working. And despite what people say for the majority of people working is not fun, they just do it cause they have to and they need to eat. Life is supposed to be fun and is something everyone should enjoy and it's not by working 9 to 5 that you can do that. If you can do otherwise then do it and just do what's fun. I don't get this be productive and so mindset. People need to stop thinking that have to do something, the only thing we have to is to help each other as much as we can, the rest should just be doing whatever we want. If you want to sleep all day then do it, people should leave their life the way they want imo.

Obi-wan Ralinoro Let's be real, we are all slaves to money and it will stay that way because the current system is designed on the premise that a human being is valuable only if has money to support the system via infinite consumption and endless growth. We all know that is not a viable system because we live on a planet with restricted resources and you can't have economy based on endless growth and endless consumpation for a long time. I don't believe it is going to change for better because there is so much power in thr hands of a tiny group of bilionaires. Peope absolutely hate their jobs and we suffer from epidemics of depresion, anxiety and inequality is absolutely the main reason for that. I've been moving a lot and I know like 2 people who like their jobs but even they admitt it's too stressful. We've been told that competition is the best thing about humans. Boy, what a bullshit that is. It doesn"t take you too much to read number of researches which documented how terrible consequences you get when you structure a group of people on competition like distrust, winners vs losers divide, rich people getting sociopathic behaviour lile cheating, lying, losing empathy etc. So, yeah... I work coz I would be dead otherwise. And there is no such a thing as freedom in the current economic system supported by the toxic idea of national identity to cover up all of its catastrophic consequences. George Carlin said "You think you are free? Just try going somewhere without money"

So, lot of points in this discussion already. I will just add that my 'solution' to all of this is to find work that you believe in or like doing. It's such a shame that people hate their jobs but rather than blame 'working', I think we should explore what work might make us happier and follow a mission that we believe in. Maybe it's just me but I tend to enjoy the times where I'm 'working' on something I care about more than basic leisure time (such as watching TV or hanging round the house)
@mkm1015

Chris the Freelancer I get what you are saying and I am happy for everyone who is happy at what they are doing, I really am. But vast majority of people hate their jobs. And it's difficult to chase what you really like doing if a) you don't have enough money to survive so you have to work the things yoi hate just to survive b) if what you like doing can't bring in money, or as we hear it's not profitable - it's useless. So vast majority of people are stuck in this endless cycle. I know this discussion went off the rails a bit, we tried to look at bigger picture. I firmly believe that in the next 20 years we will change our perception about terms like 'job' and 'work' because robots are behind the corner and technology is becoming so much more efficient that it will outpace the creation of new, mostly bullshit jobs. And the very need of our culture that people must have some 'job' which affects them badly in all ppssible ways and does not have any meaning is wrong. And it's a vaste of ones creativity. And then we come to the educational system which is again based upon competition and not sharing the knowledge. This winners-losers mentality is killing us and I don't see how anything can change for better without changing that foundation. People think that if we don't 'work' we would start taking drugs and everything would collapse. Nonesense. When you remove that foundational cause of depression, inequality and violence, your creativity in problem solving would flourish. Look at all the inovators... Vast majority of them were either poor or averige when it comes to finance, but they shared their knowledge with the world anyway. I was taught that if you invent something you will be rich. That's not true. But the incentive is money and not actual problem solving and helping the world. Thr CEO of Goldman Sachs said 2-3 months ago when talking about pharmacy industry that it may be good for humans if you solve problems regarding our health but it's bad for business. I think in that sentence you have evrything what is wrong in our currnet system. Now I see this and I acknoweledge there's no structure whatsoever in this post haha Anyway, wish you all the best Chris P.S. I tried to register on Skillsgare for your html & css course but I couldn't. I don't know why. I do all the registration and when I click sign in...nothing. Does it have to do with the browser (Firefox)?

Winchestah Work and creativity actually dont go hand in hand. Just look at reasearches on people's happiness and creativity at work and youll see shocking results. And then you have en apidemic of depression across all age groups. Keep in mind that 99% of humans presence was without money. We evolve to share and feel empathy and to be curious - which is impossible in todays capitalistic dogma. You cant express creativity in an authoritarian structures like corporations. And if you solve something hugr and actually help people in long-term, then you are out bc you cant sell to peoplr anymore. Its all about selling and advertising and consuming and selling. You have to compete all day! Of course you will look just for profits and create instability, inequality and violence. And the notion that if we someday abolosh modern slavery aka working for money, that people would sleep all day is actually what is so naive. Just imagine some open source projects where people across the globe can work without worrying about money and actually solving some world problems on all fields on a large scale, imagine all the geniuses creating thr best and sustainable cellphone, car, house without being obsessed about profits all thr time and how to screw as much people as possible, imagine having pharma industry actually carrying about people not the profits. That would be real creativity and real problem solving. Economy based on sharing and sustainability. Now, I know nothing like this will happen. So prepare yourself for more shitty jobs, wars, even bigger inequality and social instability. Europe will explode with fascism, its just a matter of time.

Loved it, Chris! I've been working on building my "Passive Income" for years and while it is growing... let me yell the nay-sayers something.... it is HARD WORK! 😆 I feel like "Passive-income" should be more or less called "future-minded income," or "slow-release income," as we tend to do the work upfront in hopes to see the fruits of our labor later on. As for "Active Income..." It is totally great if you enjoy your work. I don't enjoy mine all of the time, but I LOVED working as a Barista for a super-nice couple back in the day. Was actually reminiscing about that before clicking this video. ♥

Awesome video Chris. You hit the nail on the head, is not whether active or passive, it is about leverage or direct income from your efforts. Even if you are investing in the stock market you are leveraging with other companies and you still have to watch how that company use your resources (meaning your investment).

good points and great take on passive income. We all know that leisure (even if you have passive income) the law of diminishing marginal utility (since I graduated in economics) sets in and is bound to create a sense of boredom and one would look ways to find something to occupy their time. Many wealthy people are often involved with charity and work which is beneficial to society even if they don't earn income from that work, it gives them recognition and self fulfillment.

Yes, you went on a rant but I agree totally with your point. It all comes down to the word "passive" that is a very unfortunate word that gives a connotation of laziness and lack of energy. I believe in evolution, so either you are evolving or you are regressing.

Passive income is made exclusively through investments, banking or in the stock market. Money from royalties, cold sales, real estate, or even KZfaq videos need some sort of work to start with.

Online business is another way of self employ. Entrepreneur, passive income, such and such is just something fancy to sell their courses. Many KZfaqrs are misleading kids here. Passive income comes from asset and it seems those "Entrepreneur" don't even have a stock account. "Asset" can snowball your principle and give interest to you regularly. It is sustainable. Highly recommend people to read rich dad's series to tune into the right mindset . Besides, many people with regular job can be financially free with decent passive income. It is about how you manage your money, not just the work and living place you choose.

Passive income is income you receive without doing any work receiving it. With A pension, you do the work up front but don’t do anything to maintain it. You wake up, sip coffee and giggle. Now that’s passive income

I have some passive income from index fonds. It should increase in average about 7% per year in case that the index will continue like it has done for the last 20 years. The money is originally gained from an active income, but now I am only spending about one hour per year to rebalance the portfolio. It is not really a fast process in the beginning, but it is a way of gaining a passive income that requires close to no active attention.

@sasquatchandme3673

I agree that 'passive income' is frequently misrepresented, but I think that comes from both ends. Those talking about it tend assume those listening understand that most of the work involved is on the front end, allowing one to cruise for awhile on the fruits of their labor, but with the foreknowledge that the system they set up will require regular maintenance to continue to produce (or sometimes a complete overhaul). Many 9to5ers are so used to living paycheck to paycheck that the dream of passive income exists in their minds more than the reality. They want to believe they can set up a money making system and walk away, but that's just unrealistic.

I agree, there is nothing like real passive income. I am probably the closest thing you can get, because i was lucky on bitcoin marked, but went out of the bitcoin marked gradualy, and invested in appartments that i rent out in Norway. Last Oktober i got rid of my last Bitcoins, and are now renting out five small appartments in my hometown in Norway, and i am making 3000 USD a month. So i can retire if i want too, but aretired life would be meaningless, so i work anyway with diffrerent project, but i am happy that i don't need to make money to survive and that gives me alot of peace.

I would argue that you pie chart is not 50/50. Perhaps only the book sales is passive income. You are getting money and not doing anymore work. Your KZfaq ad revenue maybe doesn’t count, because you have to work hard to create new content to get it. I don’t know... just a thought.

I get ya. That's kind of the idea of the video, that 'passive income' is not all that passive. With KZfaq ad revenue however, you may be surprised to hear that my top earning videos each month aren't usually the ones I created in that month but rather, ones I produced years ago.
