Good topic! Just wanted to say that when you mentioned the crazy clips on insta or other stuff those are typically pre-planned combos, not trying to think and freestyle with flow on the spot (which is much much harder) but great video!

It always baffles me how people learn tricks in such a different order. Like a lot of tricks that you've mentioned you're struggling with are pretty automatic for me, more or less but for example your Z-choker is SO MUCH better than mine and I can barely do the basic version without the horizontal catch

I completely agree! I think that is one of the greatest things about balisong flipping you can completely go in your own direction

It’s weird for sure. I learned the backhand fan and extended twirl in the last couple weeks and I should have learned them 8 months ago. But I learned the z choker and shortstop back then in place of those tricks. It depends on what tutorials you watch when and what you determine to be too hard.

I feel like this is a really good topic. I see myself flipping passively through most of my videos, but with my clips, it is much more active as I am really trying to build the best combo in the moment. Goodnvideo

This was a great video to listen to and think alongside as to how to approach flipping and learning how to flip. I've been slamming out a couple tricks recently and I can say the first time I saw a rev 8ball, I'd never be able to do it. Couple days of practice proved me wrong and man reverse tricks are wild. Tip for the choker fan is to just get the initial twirl and let the bali fall after, saw it from Artsea Flips tutorial and it made learning the rest easier as the fan is very dependent on momentum.

you should learn how to helix. one of the sickest looking tricks imo. took me quite some time to perfect but so worth it. i notice you do a lot of 8 ball stuff and it fits perfectly after that and also doubles as a handle transfer. not to mention everyone wants to learn that trick so it would make a banger tutorial. edit: great video btw. i think about this all the time and i never thought i would see someone actually post about it.

I already know the helix just rarely do it for some reason. I could do a tutorial though 🤔

I do alot of autopilot flipping and do a couple of focused proper flipping moment like behind the 8 ball is something im in between autopilot and focused. I started recently as a flipping and learn all the basic tricks aside from passes and aeriels which im working on I think a balance is best for both improving but also having fun at the same time

I have been trying to flip for about 2 months, but what is the better choice to learn/practice with? A plastic (WH Squiddy) or Vulp Pro ???
@jakeflipsbalisongs
@jakeflipsbalisongs Ай бұрын
While you can definitely learn on either option the Vulp Pro is going to be a much more standard flipping experience that will better translate to other balisongs

Yeah z choker took me like a week straight of just practicing the catch. Thankfully once you figure out the timing it becomes a lot easier.

At 2:37 ... What is that move called when he has it in an underhand hold and flips it out and catches it open again?
@jakeflipsbalisongs
@jakeflipsbalisongs 2 ай бұрын
That is a z-choker to standard grip. It is a variation on the z-choker which most commonly is done into icepick grip

Oh man, I've got such a long ways to go. I'm 68 and don't feel old except when I'm trying to learn new tricks. I got my first balisong a bit over a year ago and my orginal goal was just to be able to open and close the damn thing without cutting myself. lol. I've practiced every day, and can do chaplins, fans, zin rollover, basic single and double aerial and single rotation ice pick. Working on ladders, but they're not smooth at all. So, while still at beginner level, I'm having fun and slowly improving. Fewer cut fingers, so that's good. Having fun, and enjoy learning from you young guns. Interesting video and excellent flipping.

@@alvinharp3437 yeah bro. I hear ya. I'm learning new things super slowly. I mean I have a nice combo down where I can just flip very passively and not really think and turn out beautiful. But at the same time I wanna learn new tricks, but I don't wanna know a lot of tricks at the same time. If that makes any sense.

@@SKi_Maskk03 I hear ya, most of my flipping is passive, building muscle memory I hope. When I'm active flipping I'm working on putting my basic tricks into as fluid a combination as I can. My family and friends think I'm really good, lol, and a bit crazy for getting into this. But hey, not getting any younger, so feeling like I need to learn as much as possible while I can and it really is a lot of fun.

Flipping is very subjective. One trick might be tremendously difficult for someone, while someone else already learnt it, repeated it hundreds of times and basically mastered it so now it's easy for them. Some need more time to learn a thing, some need less of it. I feel like that passive flipping is absolutely garbage method for learning new things. It just must be. To learn something new I belive You'd have to think what You're doing, cause if not, You may just not learn it at all or learn it wrong and don't even notice it. And after that You may feel confident to do it on a live blade and get a horrible wound. Learning a trick You already know, to do while flipping passively is completly different thing obvieusly. I would love to give You some advices for that choker fan, but I'm a terrible teacher and explaining things badly is my speciality. 😿 Though I could tell You that how I learnt several tricks is I kept repeating it, failing and trying again over and over for some time, then leaving trying for a few days and after that time getting back to trying. Doing that out of nowhere I realised I could do 0g Chaplin for example. I was trying to do it, one rotation at first, then I gave up on it to try few days later and notice that I started landing the spins. Not long after that I could chaplin for a long time. 🙀 Right now I'm learning infinity choker fan and double scissors. The second one is absolute hell, my knife keeps rotating mid air. 😾 But I will get there eventually. We all will, cause after we fail - we try again. 🤓😸 Cheers, good luck with learning and have a ton of fun doing so. c:

Ah double scissors are a beast for sure. Mine are nowhere near consistent. I see what you mean about doing tricks passively without thinking. Idk if it is different for me since I flip on camera a lot and have to multitask. You are right that in order to do a trick without thinking it takes a lot of practice and muscle memory.
