The speed snap opening is called the "Oscar". I developed this technique and believe it to be the single fastest method possible for opening the balisong. As someone who has been consistently flipping a balisong/butterfly knife since I was about 10 (I'm now 24), I can say I would be far more likely to drop my knife, or mess up, or "stutter" the opening, when performing a two-handed open, especially a "calm" one like described above. While yes, the flailing about of the handles of the balisong can be intimidating to some people, I assure you, that wasn't it's intended use. Once it's open, it is one of the few folding knife mechanisms on the planet that is capable of being as strong as a fixed blade knife, which makes it ideal for self defense and combat applications. Seeing as you have the strength of a fixed blade, but the size and weight of a pocket knife. There are police, SWAT, military, and even SPEC ops forces that have been known to carry the balisong, the CIA is among the list of known agencies. This doesn't include the hundreds of independent officers or soldiers that carry their own balisong because they realize it's advantages over traditional folders. If I'm in a life threatening situation, I'm going to perform an opening in which one handle never leaves my hand, making it nearly impossible for the knife to fly away from me (because remember, it's my tool of last resort, and my life mow depends on it, I'm not going to throw it in the air and hope my adrenaline won't mess up my catch.) So that advice may well get you stabbed, or killed. Anyone who has practiced with a balisong (especially a trainer) for any length of time, will perform whatever opening they're most practiced with under duress, it's just muscle memory. I'd hate for you to rely on that advice thinking that anytime you see someone perform a "flashy" opening, you're not in danger. I've met several thugs that know basic openings, very well. All knives are sharp, and are lethal weapons, regardless of how they are presented to you. That's the best advice you'll ever get. *Licensed armed security officer & private investigator. Stay safe out there.*

That squeeze/release technique is definitely unique. I haven't seen any balisong flipping tricks that utilize it before. It would probably work well when combined with aerials and tabletops. It seems like it would be hard to make it consistent between different balisong designs though.

Look, I know it’s fast but that’s a risky ass move with a live blade. you can see in the video when the blade actually hit your finger a few times. That’s easily a severed artery requiring a trip to the ER. 🔪✊🩸

Rob Hodge not sure what you are saying? that there are no arteries in the hand or that you cant clip one doing this stupid shit with a live blade? hell i cut an artery in my hand opening the pull top on a can of campbell’s soup when i was younger wouldnt stop bleeding no matter what we tried to do with it eventually i was forced to go to the ER and get stitches. hell you can easily slice the tip of a finger off like its butter you do the wrong shit.

I'll admit it was another Counter Strike joke, hahah. The way the game is structured (they kept it more or less the same since '99) is that when you take out a lighter weapon you run faster, and the knife is the lightest weapon you have. Now of course you're thinking that that wouldn't make sense, since you must still be carrying your other weapons and the weight is still on your body. You'd be correct, but that's the way it is, and we love it that way.
