Pastel Portrait Tutorial: In this Narrated video of my tribute Pastel painting of the legendary Diego Maradona I share with you my techniques and tips on how I achieve the skin tones. I mainly use use three primaries colours and complimentary colours. Take a look to find out more. This is Part1.

Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I use: numbers...
Primary colours/ Complementary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145
Orange 788-052
Purple 788-099
Green 788-719
Rich colours I sometime use for the bright areas in the skin tones...
788- 541, 542, 871, 581. 068
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

It is the same approach I have for water colour and oil painting... just adapted it a little to work with pastels... keeping the palette simple helps one to understand how colours mix. ☺🙏

Brilliant tutorial Dave 👍🏻,you make it look so easy 😊. It inspires me to have a go too ,I really want to do portraits,just can’t get the skin tones and the eyes right ,I always get wonky eyes 😂

Thanks from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to share your talent and techniques with soft pastels. With your recommendation I just purchased thd Caran D'Ache Genere set of 40. I've used the Unison sticks and the Faber Castell Pit Pastels. I'm very new to painting and looking foreward to watching all of your videos. Do you offer additional and even more detailed instructions online?

hi dave, another stunning likeness, i have only just started drawing mainly in coloured pencil, i have just tried using complimentary colours for shading up until now i have been using different shades of grey i am finding a little difficulty in blending pencils any tips please

Hi Spencer... not familiar with coloured pencils, what i have observed I would think the method would still apply... just have to find the way by experimenting. :-)
