So interesting. I’m Jewish clergy and would love to have this kind of conversation with Christians. So often it feels like when I am in interfaith conversation, the underlying hope and goal is to convert me. It’s frustrating because I simply want to have respectful and interesting conversations like this.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a great show. I am learning so much more about God and Jesus Christ. It’s adding to my faith in Jesus. Everyone who lives on the Earth inherits a kingdom of glory. Jesus died so we could live.

Can I just say how much I love these conversations! They are needed! I believe that as the world moves to more and more divisiveness/hate, Christian’s need to unite in Christlike love and charity for one another, so thank you both. As an LDS person, I do not believe that we “know it all” but I do believe in continuing revelation, personally and for our church, through a living prophet. The restoration that Joseph Smith initiated was not a one time event, but continues today and we continue learning better ways to observe and understand Christ’s gospel message/true doctrine. Through study, faith and unconditional love, our paths come closer together. Because ultimately, we are all just walking each other home. ❤️

Nice video. I loved how you both showed respect for each other and were still able to express honest differences. THAT'S the kind of mutual respect I'm used to with my Protestant and Catholic friends. We may see things differently but we can STILL be friends and consider each other Christians.

WOW!! 🤩 I tripped across an episode of Hello Saints today and I was nervous to click on it owing to the vast amounts of mud slinging that tends to center around meaningful topics to people (religion, politics, etc.) but I was SOOOOOO uplifted to see honest curiosity without bias taking place. Thank you Jeff! I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I so appreciate the respect that you have shown throughout your video clips. To ditto the previous comments made, the world would be a better place if everyone were as kind and thoughtful with their words and actions and attitude as you are toward everyone. It seems like you have set out to learn, not cut down. And I think the thing that has stood out to me the most with both of you here, and Jeff’s other videos, is that when we really are converted to Jesus we truly and deeply remember that when Jesus himself was questioned about what the most important commandment was He said LOVE! I am a true believer that anything can be discussed and friends made when Love 💗 is at the center of the conversation. And we can be great friends at the end of the day even if we don’t agree about everything. This is a personal thought of mine, not doctrine from my church, but I believe that just maybe one of the tests God is giving us here on earth is to see to what degree we can Love everyone… not just those who agree with us. But agree to disagree and still be honorable and respectful and even Love everyone. And I love your curiosity. Just THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Great conversation! If i may add one thought about the importance of family as it pertains to God and salvation. It is said that salvation is a personal matter and exaltation is a family matter. Our individual salvation is between us and God, however our exaltation is far more than that. We are all part of God's literal family (Acts 17:28; we are Gods "genos", or literal kin or offspring). God's whole work and glory is "to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" (Moses 1:39). God glories in bringing His seed up to His level, to experience all the joy He has. To be like God, we must engage in this work too. We must look beyond our own selves and reach out in love to those around us. As we "loose ourselves" in the work of God, we actually "find ourselves." Exaltation is developing that outward love that God has, and this can only be done by the Spirit of Christ transforming us to become more God-like, more Holy, more elevated in nature and in being..... i.e exalted.

I think the reasons these videos do so well is that both individuals aren't seeking to put each other down, or aggressively proselytize each other to their beliefs, but understand each ones beliefs in an honest and respectful way.

Loved the tone! As a latter-day saint I kept thinking "that's a great point!" to Jeff's statements without feeling defensive or attacked. The whole conversation at the end about heaven is a true differentiator between doctrines that I wish had been articulated a bit more clearly. Even more than putting "families" over God, I think latter-day saints put "individual exaltation" over God which is really alarming. However, I think the correct doctrine is that we believe in becoming one with God (John 17). This means losing ones self (Matt 16:25), not exalting ones self. It's not as common to discuss it in those terms but I believe that's the correct application of our doctrine. So, in exaltation we are completely united with God and therefor we ARE God and share his attributes rather than eternally being separate and less than him. Our purpose isn't just to be saved from sin as a lesser being, but to grow to become totally united God. To take it further, God is Truth and our suffering is a result of separation from truth so Christ allows us to be totally united as one with truth (God). So, that family connection is really just a universal unity as Jeff described more than the family unit we think of in mortality, IMO. Still, I completely understand the resistance to this belief but hopefully it makes sense.

Loved the conversation! The two of you set a great example for how people of differing beliefs can discuss religion, be respectful, and not devolve into name calling. Jeff, is such a cool and compassionate guy-can we be friends?

Pastor Jeff - As a long time Latter Day Saint, I greatly appreciate your approach in taking a look at our faith. I know that Jesus and his atonement for all human kind is the center of true Christian faith, regardless of denomination, and that true “discipleship” is always more important than “membership”. Accepting and following the Savior transcends all.

I love the respect you 2 have for each others opinion , and looking for the common ground you have but also the differences in a respect full way . If we would all do that , the world would be a better place !! Thank you from an LDS member ( former Catholic ) !

Thanks for doing this! My answer to the family-replacing-God question is that we emphasize the familial relationship of God as our Father. We see God through the lens of family. So our goal to be with our family forever is a reflection and parallel of our desire to be with God forever since he is our literal Father in Heaven.

Great discussion and perfect civility. As a Latter-day Saint, I have been yelled at, to my face, many times, by evangelical Christians that I'm going to hell, etc. I've been fired from 2 jobs due to my faith by evangelical Christians and have called out NUMEROUS evangelicals for their dishonesty and bigotry towards our faith and church, online and elsewhere. it's exhausting!! I just ask everyone, regardless of personal belief, to have respect for others' faith and beliefs and do as Jesus instructed: love God and love one another. I hope one day evangelicals will stop making anti-Saint videos, books, tracts, and recognize Latter-day Saints as Christians, every bit as much as they are, and have us all get along. This video is a great start!

Jeff, this is such great stuff you are doing! I am a pastor who has interacted with Mormons as friends and discussion partners for over 40 years! It's an exciting journey even though I feel I can not embrace facets of the Restoration movement as a Christian pastor. Enjoy the journey!

This was so inspiring- two people with different faiths being able to share what they believe with each other. Their commitment to a path of peace and Christian discipleship was more important to them than being right. After all, how will others know of our love for God other than our love for each other. We need so much more of this kind of conversation, with faith and with political differences.

I really appreciate what the pastor said about using God to be with family. In the New Testament Jesus said, "he that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.", I know that in relationships we often have to choose to follow God. Obedience is greater than sacrifice. I also appreciate how my fellow LDS member said we weren't trying to replace God. I know we are little children in the gospel, getting things wrong and learning right, and that God is long-suffering, just, and merciful to those who seek Him. I appreciate this example of sitting and understanding each other.

The relationships within our families is the best way to know and feel the love of our Eternal Heavenly Father. When we work for good family relationships, we are progressing towards what God is, a loving, giving, all knowing, omnipotent Father. It’s all about how we treat one another, especially as family. That’s why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints puts so much emphasis on the family. We are taught that we will be judged according to how we treated our family members, most especially how we treated our spouse.

@23:25 If I could interject, there's context for our doctrine on the family: Latter-day Saints believe God has revealed that His purpose as God is to bring about the immortality and eternal life of man. His purpose is to build a place for His children to be tested on outside of His presence, send them there, test them, redeem them, and bring them back to live forever in His presence. So when Latter-day Saints talk about "eternal life," we believe that God is going to teach us what it means to have an 'eternal' life. You could even say He's going to teach us how to live his 'lifestyle' for lack of a better term. We believe He is going to teach us to do what HE does. Part of that lifestyle is eternal relationships. We believe the family unit is central to this eternal plan that God has for us. It's the vehicle by which we come into the world, are taught the gospel of Christ (hopefully), and experience our closest relationships. But just because we believe the family unit is central to this plan and that it's a feature of what it means to receive "exaltation" doesn't mean it replaces God or our need to place our relationship with Him as the top priority. But our doctrine on 'the eternal family' is completely unique to the rest of Christianity.

I have been a member of the LDS Church for over 50 years, and I only learned that the cheesy potatoes served at potlucks and funerals were called funeral potatoes during Covid when a new Relief Society President was called who was a Utah native. Cheesy potatoes was always an important part of potlucks, I just never heard anyone call it Funeral Potatoes. As for the Jello, again the lime green Jello with carrots and marshmallows is something I also associate with Utah transplants. My Ward's potlucks tend to have lots of Hispanic/Brazilian dishes. What else would one expect from southern Michigan.

Hello Jeff. We really don’t worship family as an idol. It’s more like a feeling that we are all part of Heavenly Father’s eternal. We don’t earn our way to return to His presence. Jesus has paid the full price to redeem us from the fall. We choose to draw nearer to Him. We do that by remembering Jesus Christ, keeping His commandments, and striving to follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Of course we all want to share that joy with our loved ones.

This was such a good interview. It makes me think that Christians and Latter Day Saints are more alike in the true heart of theology than different

One of the most important things that Latter Day Saints and other Christian faiths have in common is the love of family and healthy family relationships. We both believe that the joy we feel through these Christ centered relationships will endure throughout eternity. I have always appreciated that about my Christian brothers and sisters and have much respect for them in this common goal. If there are points of doctrine that we disagree on, it is usually more of a misinterpretation of intent than anything else.

Great video!…. One thing… The family, is not just my wife, kids… my family, IS with GOD! I will be with my family ( I hope ). But it’s more, God has one family, I’m a part of that so if anything, the focus on the family is 100% about GOD! The point is ( when I’m sealed to my wife, now my family is sealed to God. Meaning I “if I choose through my actions and keep covenants I’ve made during my life,” I will be with God, I will be a part of HIS family which is eternal, To live a Christ like life, is the way, the example or model to follow… Long answer short, the emphasis on families in the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints, is completely focused on God, it can’t overshadow it it’s not more important because the answers one in the same. You’re right, being with Heavenly Father forever is Eternal Life. “This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3) We believe in putting God before family but we also believe that family is central to God’s eternal plan of Happiness for us. We believe that Heavenly Father is the father of our spirits so when the scriptures teach that we are the family of God, we believe this in a very real sense. That being said, at the the end of the day, we follow God over all things. Here are some of our core beliefs: 1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. 2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression. 3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel. 4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. 5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. 6. Oh my goodness, this might be one of the best videos I’ve ever seen! Hearing you speak about your pentecostal upbringing, and the fullness of the gospel is exactly how I would described my upbringing as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. Although a devout member of my church, I am intrigued by the doctrines of other faiths, and have a deep respect for them. I have visited a few other church services and find so much beauty in the way others worship. This has probably already been said in the other comments, but, as a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I find it fascinating to hear Pastor Jeff McCullough's take on many of the traditions and doctrines of the church. It helps me to better understand and appreciate where other Christians are coming from as we discuss beliefs and perspectives that may be different. Ultimately, I feel we have more in common than we realize, especially our love for Jesus Christ. Keep making these videos! I am a fan and am learning a lot!

I can imagine someone has already suggested this, but if you haven't, it might be helpful if you were to get an LDS King James Bible which will include the Topical Guide to The Scriptures. It's an index, not a commentary or typical "study Bible" notes like the ESV or NET study Bible. That guide will give you scriptural references on topics for all of the LDS Standard Works. I'm excited to see the next steps of your journey when you get into documenting your reading of the Book of Mormon! I testify that it is a powerful book in the hands of one who loves the Savior, and has a heartfelt desire for greater understanding.

Something I love about this interaction so much is that it is healing a part of me that I forgot was there. I think as a member of the LDS church, I have a natural defensiveness/fear that creeps in when it comes to talking about religion with the larger Christian population, and I realize it's because the LDS church is often targeted as being too different or being wicked and satanic. It's really hurtful to be attacked in that way as if you weren't even a real person. Seeing Pastor Jeff and David talking to each other is replacing my negative past experiences with beautiful new experiences where I truly believe that people who believe different things can still treat each other with respect, kindness, and genuine friendship.

Great conversation! As in other faiths there is some diversity of beliefs among latter-day saints. Different leaders put emphasized different teachings. Many older members of my ward would not agree with all of David's answers. Many members under 40 would probably agree with David. I liked all the answers from both sides!

The reason why family is so important to us is because we believe God is our family. He is our father in heaven. So being together with our family automatically includes our father who is in heaven. So from my perspective, it really means yes I want to be with god forever but I also want the rest of my earthly family to be with him as well. The emphasis we have on family really is just us focusing on bringing others to him including our family.

It was fun listening to both of you! I was impressed that both of you worked on focusing on the similarities rather than sounding like you don’t have similarities by focusing on describing the differences. I have a tendency to answer questions from a difference point of view making myself sound argumentative. It is interesting to notice how Brooke can focus on the similarities when responding rather than the differences. I am intrigued by this channel and actually kind of like watching the videos. You are a great role model!

I'm learning a lot from Pastor Jeff about how big God is. As a member of the LDS church, I believe that God has a body and is our Heavenly Father, and that Jesus Christ is His Son in the flesh. But recently I've really been contemplating how sometimes in the culture of my faith I think we oversimplify God. I agree with so much of what Pastor Jeff is describing God as. I believe that we see God from different viewpoints at different points in our life and gleam bits of understanding about Him, but that ultimately He is so much bigger than I can comprehend in this life. At the same time, I believe that He is a caring Father who knows me personally and hears my prayers and knows the details of my life. I believe there are many paradoxes like this as we strive to understand God and His nature. (The paradox of Him being beyond my understanding, yet also like a loving Father to me who knows me and wants me to know Him.) Another note: In the LDS church we often talk about "God" without distinguishing whether we are talking about Jesus Christ of His Father (who we call Heavenly Father). I believe this is because we believe that they are both referred to as God because Jesus Christ's Will and life are perfectly aligned with Heavenly Father's. So we do believe in Jesus Christ as God also.

I know!! Maybe talk about feelings about family home evenings, family prayer 🙏 and family scripture study!! We never got to have those, growing up, unless I asked. So we had two official home evenings, and a number of family prayers. So when I needed to heal from depression and anxiety, I asked for senior missionaries (a couple) to come and have a home evening every Monday night with me for a while. That helped me to get well. That was after I had not been as close to my family for a time. Whether we call it family home evening or not, I do know that time with family, doing various kinds of things, is a commandment of the Lord, or part of it. If we don’t love ❤️ our family, how can we succeed at other things? Anyway, we did lots together growing up, anyway, and we ate together at dinner times, and on some weekends for nice breakfasts. We also went to see grandparents and other relatives, and on vacations and picnics out in the country, or to our grandpa’s cabin in the mountains. And our holidays were always celebrated in grand and glorious ways!! We were blessed!!

I love how people get together and then obviously the next step is food. The food comparisons were lots of fun.

You brought up a great point about how it can certainly be easy to slip into loving our families more than we love God. This is true for everyone. God is our Heavenly Father, and as such, we should strive to love Him and give all thanks to Him. However, we are also commanded to be LIKE Him...How are we to be like Him if we are not raising a family and teaching them as Christ teaches us? Even though our love for God should be the prime focus in life, having an eternal view of family does not take away from that objective in any way, as long as someone is always giving the praise to God and looking towards Him in life. They don't have to contradict each other.

Here's a thought: The Latter-day Saint Church holds Temple Open Houses for pre-dedicated Temples all the time. This would be one way of coming and seeing the buildings themselves and to give your open and honest opinion on what you see there. No, it's not like you're actually doing Temple ceremonies, etc. but you can give your impressions on what you see there.

Jeff, I listened to your experience in nauvoo. For a pastor trying to learn so much about this church, I feel like you need to start with the basics. I am aware that you know our Temples mean the world to us. These temples are incredibly necessary. For a man that has been educated, I hope that they informed you that the Bible has missing books as well as even scriptures taken out of chapters. The temple allows us to live a higher law. Keep studying, your missing or just really don’t care or understand some incredible teachings. I am glad that I have enjoyed your talks with one another

I love that you have this channel. I am a very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I love all religions. In today's world we need religion. We need the Savior in our life's. Each Christian faith have varying thoughts, feelings, beliefs and understanding of the gospel. At the end of the day the Savior is at our core and we need to support each other during these hard times.

I recently finished a book called "How Wide the Divide" by Craig Blomberg of the Denver Theological Seminary, and the late Stephen E. Robinson from the BYU Department of Religion. These two men, one, Evangelical, and one LDS presented the LDS and Evangelical side on four areas of doctrine. I found it refreshing to see an open discussion. These gentlemen talked with each other, and not to each other. At the end of each chapter, they looked to see what areas of common ground they shared. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

This was so fascinating to listen to as a Evangelical Protestant from the UK! Love to hear about the similarities I have with Christians from areas like Jeff's, who are very similar in belief to me, and also with the LDS church. Great video, keep up the excellent work

@21:08 WE BELIEVE THAT TOO! God is the ultimate judge and we do the ordinances to teach us how to have a more perfect heart. And no one will be excluded who is supposed to be there because God is JUST and MERCIFUL to the most perfect degree.

I just found your channel yesterday, and have binged all your videos(except the shorts) On the issue of family, I just want to add a bit about the ordinance of Sealing(Eternal marriage) When we are sealed, the covenants we make are with God to be loyal to our spouse, but we don't actually covenant directly with our spouse.

The big win here, is dialogue and finding common beliefs. As a member of the church, my primary focus and foundation of my faith is on our Savior. And he’s not the Savior of just one church or people.

I totally respect Mr. Snell's answer to eternal plural marriage. The most honest and respectable answer sometimes is I (we) don't t know.

Thank you, Jeff, for your bridge building efforts. I believe that as we draw ever nearer to Christ's return that it will become crucial for all His disciples to band together in righteous brotherhood against the powers of darkness. God bless us so to do.

Great respectful conversation. I wish they had gotten into the details a bit more, but its a good start! I also wish David had responded more directly to the question about if the importance of family is being placed above God, by just clearly saying "No, that's not what we're doing.", then explaining more from there. His answer came across as kind of vague, and non-Lds should understand that nothing is placed above God in the Lds faith. In our beliefs, God can bless us with eternal families, but that in no way overshadows God Himself. God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, hold the upmost importance and devotion in the LDS faith.

Great video. I like the honesty put forth and respect. This is how dialog with others who have different views should be conducted. The MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THIS LIFE IS HAVING A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD!!!!! THAT IS THE FIRST AND GREAT COMMANDMENT FROM GOD IS. GOD has no distracting hobbies! That omnipotent being WANTS A RELATIONSHIP WITH US. INDIVIDUALLY. COMPLETELY.

Your discussion on curiosity was spot on. I have seen it cut both ways with members in the LDS church. With some it had led to a stronger testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and others it had led to them falling away and losing faith completely.

21:20 Jeff, I'll admit that as a grown man, I started crying at your explanation here. I fully agree that no matter what difference or disagreements you might have with lds folks or we might have with your beliefs, that any of us, who are truly and wholeheartedly trying to reach for God to the best of our understanding, will be denied accept to his love, mercy and presence. I just don't see a loving and just God saying, "I know there were a lot of differing views about me, and I gave you agency to choose, but you chose wrong by 3% so you're out."

We as believers in Christ need to stick together...love these conversations!

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints currently living in Utah, I had no idea what funeral potatoes or Mormon Jello were. And I love Mostacciolli.

The Father and Jesus Christ should be the center of the family in our mortal state. We should include Him as to what music we listen to, what movie we watch. He should be the center of our conversation as the center of our family.

On the 16:09 minute marker David makes a point that not just marriages even our relationships/friendships with those not of our faith will continue to the afterlife. On that note, One of the temple recommend interview questions are: “Are you honest with your dealing with fellow man/woman?” We all have to answer this question seriously since how we treat one another has an eternal consequence. We will meet and see these people again on the day of judgement.

As a descendant of plural marriage in the church, I wasn’t really thrilled with his answer. But overall I loved the discussion. Thank you.

As a member who grew up with a shattered family unit, this over emphasis on earthly family fulfilling us was always excruciating. Jesus is what I need. I was 15 when I realized Jesus was my center of gravity, God the Father is the only father I truly need. And I needed to seek them first. Jeff is right, this cultural oversight needs correction. Family is so important. But Jesus is the goal. He is the way. He is the life.
