That orange red jacket you have is not the previous model. It’s the previous previous model. That’s the old school pouch pocket. If you can get the previous model, that is the best design they have. But it’s great to know you can get a swap out. Would have been cool to see how beat up your old jacket was for them to give you a trade in

Good to know. The jacket I have on is actually a Special Edition Better Sweater, so there are a few things that are different from the current model.

Great video comparing the two versions! A couple things that I noticed when also comparing them side-by-side, the old hooded version had a considerable amount of fleece covering the chin and lower face area. This added a boost in warmth and overall coziness that is unfortunately missing in this new version. The old down sweater also had a nicer main zipper in my opinion. It used a YKK Vislon zipper with chunkier plastic teeth versus the new one which has a YKK RC (racquet coil) zipper which may be a little less durable and more stiff and noisy. Other than that, this update is a substantial improvement. The fit change, sleeker pockets, and added down fill makes it much more appealing and versatile.

Yeah, these are great points, especially the lack of a fleece zipper garage on the new one. That was something I (and my chin) really appreciated on the old version, especially once it got cold out. As far as the new zipper, I hope it ends up being as durable as the old version, as least in my use case, but you’re right, the teeth are definitely less chunky. I’ve had a lot of Patagonia zippers fail on me unfortunately, so I’m hoping that trend ends with this jacket.

The cuffs! Is my first down sweater and it’s not done well, makes me want to get rid of it and buy something else. For such a warm jacket, I always feel the cold at the wrists!!

I’ve seen or heard this in a few comments now and I’m just happy I haven’t experienced it myself. Is yours a 2022 or 2023 model?

While 900 down fill is a teensy bit lighter than the 800 fill it also compresses more on the shoulders and arms actually giving less loft and thus less warmth. I like the new Patagucci down hoodie/parka BUT it does not have DWR treated down so I'll take an LL Bean down hoodie,TYVM.

That’s totally fair. I don’t have to deal with liquid precip all that often here in the high desert and when I do I go with synthetics.

This would be almost perfect with 2 changes. First is treated down. Second is a double front zipper.

Dont know if i missed it but did you mention the change in sleeve length? Compared to my 2019 version the new versions sleeve is 2 inches longer, which is ridiculous for me as instead of ending just past my wrist like before it now ends at my fingers. Way too long. Going to return it and try a small

I see and hear this comment a lot. I am 5'7" with a 5'9" wingspan, so I hardly have long arms. I think that sleeve length must be inconsistent with these jackets because for my size medium the sleeve length is perfect for me. I think if it is at all possible to try these jackets on beforehand that's the way to go to make sure you get one that fits well.

Would the nano puff jacket be better than this if you live in a wet climate? I live in the U.K. and it rains a lot. Sounds like where down wouldn’t be a good idea?

If we’re talking synthetic from Patagonia I think the closest comparison to the down sweater would be a Micro Puff, though the Nano Puff is also a good, albeit not as warm (imo) option. If you want something synthetic that’s even warmer, I really like the DAS or the Macro Puff, both of which I’ve reviewed here. Thanks for watching!

Thanks, very informative. Question: when you said that Patagonia “swapped it out” does that mean they gave you a new one for the old one, at no charge?

@@almostadventurous That is absolutely crazy, just goes to show the ethos of the company not out entirely for profit and backs up what it says but doing things like this and their buy back for credit on old Patagonia stuff. Ive just ordered one of these in this colour looks really nice.

When it gets that cold I always layer. Last year I did a summit hike around those temperatures and this jacket was part of what I wore. Underneath I wore a baselayer, then an R1, and a shell over it since it was pretty windy and snowy. Layering is always key. Over just a t shirt? Not gonna cut it. As part of a layering setup? Sure.

I really don't understand why you say the new version is tighter or more slim than the old one. I also bought a new version in the same size last year. I experience the opposite. Very bulky around the waist, very loose sleeves and too long. Perhaps the European variants are produced elsewhere and have different dimensions. I returned the jacket and I was very disappointed.

When laid on top of each other the new version is a bit slimmer, which is why I said that, maybe the quality control isn’t there or the years we were comparing were different. I’ve heard the same thing about the sleeves from other though in my experience it just isn’t a problem. Different people have different dimensions though so what works for me might not be the case for you. The added insulation from the previous version to the current makes mine much warmer and overall I’m happy with it.
