For $752,000 I would expect there to be no wobble in the second hand and if I were Patek's CEO I would never allow a video to be published that so clearly shows it.

Patek's CEO obviously has enough time to run through CVs of potential buyers so he can nix the sale if somebody's not up to "Patek's level", but he didn't find the time to watch the promotional video for a 750 grand watch that shows it's sub par and wobbly.. Someone's getting fired here, either a watchmaker, a video producer or this US CEO..

+Tupac Amaru I think you're correct about the wobble of the second hand. If someone who posted this online thought that was impressive...they are dead wrong. It appears that the shaft leading to the gearing is "bent", therefore creating the slop or wobble in the hand motion. I am well familiar with tourbilion movements, and have owned a couple, but nothing like this. Even so, neither of mine had wobbles in the hands. Speaking of accuracy, I have an Invicta "Reserve Collection" COSC Certified Chronometer quartz wristwatch, which has a Swiss Made movement and 18-carat gold layering finish. I last set all the function including matching it to atomic timing...right to the second. Now, since it's not an atomic watch and has mechanical hands, it difficult to tell if I actually got it set to the exact split second. It has been running for more than NINE MONTHS, and still is no more than a second faster than atomic time! I would consider that very, very accurate. A wind up watch such as the Tourbilion, or any hand-wound, or true automatic timepiece, would be hard-pressed to match that accuracy. Even so, it would have to be wound every day, and not worn at all, and then one could see how accurate it was. The automatic (or self-winding as they used to be called) would need to be mounted in a quality watch winder, and left along to measure the accuracy.

at the highest level of luxury watches, quality is relative. ...and what I mean when I say this is that price is not an indicator of quality. So essentially, you're paying for the brand.

It's when you buy what I call lower luxury items that you only pay the brand. Get yourself a pair of Nike shoes, that's paying the brand. A watch such as this one takes thousands (at least a few hundred) of hours of fine handwork by some of the most skilled craftsmen available. Those people probably get a good salary, and deserve their lovely checks a lot more than most of those who make up the 1% richest people on earth. Take their fair hourly rate times the thousands (or hundred) of hours involved in making this watch, and you'll find you're paying what you get. Not even mentionning all the reaserch involved in creating such a refined movement, and the reasearched involved in finding the best materials, with the best properties to keep accuracy regardless of temperature and humidity. And what it costs to produce those very specific metals. Each part of the movement is polished by hand + the engravings + the days of carefully testing the watch before putting it out for sale...

Yeah ... for me like most regular people this is an insane concept . the watch is beautiful but very standard looking, 99.9999999% of people wouldn't even know what or who the fuck Patek Philippe is ... Yeah, you can buy this shit and then have it as a family heirloom or what ever ... but really? Family heirlooms I think should unique items never available again passed on for a few generations at least ... not just some expensive watch. I know there is a waiting list and that Patek guy him self "decides if you are WORTHY" of his watches ... but this shit retarded for me ... My family heirloom is a 13th century sword/kilic, ... I'd probably put more importance in a 5 generation old cheap vase with a good background story than a 700k$+ watch I just got with no real story or background But I understand mate ... if you can afford this it's probably not a big deal for you ... but most people in the world don't make that much in their entire life.... most people in the developed world work 30 years and earn that much combined in all those years (I don't mean in savings ... as in that's their all the paychecks they get in 10/20/30 years combined) That said ... want a HEIRLOOM, or something to pass on to your family .. how about you use that 700K to buy some property or something? Seriously mate .. I understand WHY etc ... but ... that 700 000 could help so many poor people .. it could do so much other things, create new businesses, jobs etc. Buy property etc. And I get some people love these things, it's their hobby, it's their passion .. I understand it .. but imagine a very wealthy collector of these watches ... he could probably have fed a poor country for a decade with all that money haha ... *I understand it's not everyone's responsibility to take care of the poor etc .. but a bit of compassion mate .. this is insane money for a watch ... 10k etc .. ok .. but for 700 000k you can buy a fucking villa in most countries!*
@kingfahd32
@kingfahd32 8 жыл бұрын
+3choBlast3r You seem to be talking much about the fact that it isn't an heirloom watch and it costs 750k and you can buy a villa for that price, I'm sorry you just are missing the purpose of this piece, people purchase these pieces because of the innovation, the pain staking hours to create this piece, the attention to detail, this is mechanical art, and with the complication considered, i swear this piece is actually damn underpriced.
@Gindaman999
@Gindaman999 8 жыл бұрын
+3choBlast3r You have a point there my friend, but you have to understand three things: First, is the economic options of the SUPER rich. Watches like these provide a great "asset allocation" I'm not talking about investment per se, but imagine you already have a variety of investment portfolio that includes funds and properties, and you also have made many and satisfying charitable donations. After that, you are still cash-heavy, who do you do? You have to spend money on these like this, otherwise what is the point having all these cash? Cash is just paper to you. Second, is the value of Patek Philippe. I cannot say this about all the watchmakers, but buying a Patek Philippe, especially highly complicated one, does not mean you are dumping all the money into the ocean. Patek provides great value, and again, I'm not claiming buying the watch will make great investment (which occasionally might be true), but considering all the investments a super rich person has already done, this is a great option. Third, it's a hobby. I think you mention it, but let me elaborate. There are many who are not rich but still into mechanical watches, who still appreciate things like these even they cannot afford them. Such passion might not have anything to do with materialism. And also, there many other hobbies that can cost a lot more than this. Mechanical watchmaking in all forms is a dying art, so I personally respect this kind of art form. Watch lovers are not evil :)

@Jacob, there are far more admirable things than time-keeping capability. Everything comes down to lifestyle. Maybe you don't want to spend a fortune buying mechanical watches because to you, horology is just too luxurious and out of the ordinary, and you would prefer something more practical and closer to your budget. To some others, which are fortunate enough, horology isn't just about functionality, but also rarity, history and heritage. Your quartz watch may last for 10? 20 years? Then it will be thrown away/recycled just like your phone or your other electronic devices. Mechanical watches, on the other hand, can last for hundreds of years, passing from generation to generation. They don't simply tell time, they tell stories. Bonus a little quick fact, say you bought a 50,000 USD watch that would last for 100 years, at the minimum. You simply spent 500 USD per year, at the maximum.

Anyone who is able to buy a $752k watch is going to be an "elitist" so they're just picking which type they want to do business with. What they want to do is make sure it's someone with a genuine passion for fine watchmaking and not just some extremely wealthy person who just wants it as a statue symbol. It's more than a watch to them, its a piece of art and they're selective of who they sell it to based off of the motives of the buyer. If it's clear the buyer doesn't actually have a passion for watches and just wants it as a status symbol, I think it's good that they don't want to sell directly to them.

Not meeting the expectations. Check sequence at 1:58. This is a sequence where the second hand is shown in fast forward mode. To my surprise, one can clearly see a certain wobble or misalignment can clearly be seen. Would you expect this from a watch of this price? Any comments?

This is a watch brand and others similar to it, are time pieces not even most average millionaires would be able to afford one. A low cost Patek can start in the range of $25K or so. There are valid reasons for this.

Don't worry everyone, Stern doesn't reject people from buying the watch to be an Elitist, he does it to keep the watch only among the Elite. ... That's some interesting double-speak we have going on here.

If you only sell to enthusiasts to protect the brand it can only mean one thing - you don't want your product to be assessed in an objective way, because you know it would fail. So, thank you, but no thank you.

The more balanced 36.8mm Ref. 5016 is better suited to the same old 27mm caliber of its newer but fatter brother. I.e., Notice how the leap year indicator is squashed against the retrograde date arc despite the larger dial compared to the original 5016. (Sigh. Using the same calibre for a fatter case is very unPatek.)

This watch is an astonishing piece of engineering, encompassing the tradition of one country in general, and one company in specific, inside it. Would I buy such a watch? Difficult question since I would never afford it. It is very difficult to decide and choose a side on this battle, the battle of life as happening and the life that should be happening (this is also arguable). Would I regret it if I had bought it and I was at the bed of a hospital living the last days of my life? Would it pass from my mind that I had the chance to use that money more wise and help other people? Probably yes. I would be more proud to be able to design and manufacture a watch by myself than to own a very expensive watch. However some people have money and it is their money that help science and engineering develop in some fields. Also, we must understand that such a watch is an investment of money, either we like it or not. I think noone can argue that it is a wonderful watch to look at and even watch it...

iwatch 4.- accurate for the milliseconds forever and costs USD 600. So I can have the iwatch, the latest iPhone, an Audi Q7 SUV, a nice ocean-going motorboat with 6 people capacity, plus an around the World holiday for all the family and still have some change left. Alternatively I can have a watch...
