I loved the reaction Pat! I just wanted to point one thing out that Gavin playing the hi-hat with his foot in the later part was not because he was "excited" or something, he intentionally did that to give the effect of the fast pace of the song! It's not something accidental or something he improvised in the moment, you can even hear it on the actual studio recording! Gavin never does anything accidentally and always plays for the song! Thanks ❤

Maybe it is “just” 4/4 but niter mangini or Carey could play with the feel or sound as Gavin and that is why mike is Mike, Danny is Danny and Gavin is Gavin. Love all of them

He's one the drummers I really like to listen. The 2 albums that after he joined Pineapple Thief were really good if you ask me. The reason I started to listen that band was because along with songs were great you can tell there's something different in drums. Simply amazing, love Gavin Harrison.

I'd say that very little of GH's stuff is simple. He just hides most of his fancy stuff under the backbeat. He's also one of the most rhythmically creative drummers out there, and I think that's evident from how rarely plays a straight 4/4 groove, even when that would've sounded acceptable.

hughe Tool Fan here but Gavin is my absolutely favorite drummer together with Danny. Gavin got the best sounding drums i've ever heard. If Tool would ever need a new drummer, Gavin is the only one i could imagine playing those sick polyrthms und sigantures. But nevertheless, music isn't about comeptition....gonna see Tool, Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief Live this year. Keep safe ✌

I understand what he's saying about him playing the hi hat along with the ride through the "chorus" sections, but I actually like it. I could be wrong, but the ride sounds like it's a Dry Ride, and those have very little resonace. So, by adding the hihat along with it, it helps fill out the sound when the music is as its heaviest and busiest

Gavin Harison to me is like that one friend that doesn't ever say anything TOO overly in your face.. until suddenly they say something that's just fucking crazy and it hits so much harder. It's like Gavin just rides it all out nice and cool, then suddenly he lays down these TASTY fills. The use of space is just so clean. He stays out of the way but then, suddenly, he is the most powerful force in the whole song and he isn't even trying.

Trust me, if you appreciate the drums in Dream Theater and Tool (you bloody well should do by the way, both phenomenal drummers with their own unique style) you cant overlook overlook Gavin. You say it's in 4/4 but he has this ability to make you think it's in a more complex time signature. Unbelievable control and flow, he never does too much, just marries with the song and Steven Wilson's voice perfectly, the same way Danny matches Maynards voice.

Not the best most clinical way to learn haha but I can fo stuff I just dont know what it's all called lol

5:42 I would say that hi-hat quarter note pattern actually fits quite well, but it's poorly blended in. As an engineer I would lower the hi-hat down just a touch into the mix.
@PatFlanigan
@PatFlanigan 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a good point! But I try to "mix myself" when I play the drums to fit the song and make the engineer's life a bit easier. Maybe it was a creative choice of his, or maybe he just got a bit carried away with that left foot!
@jejdigo
@jejdigo 4 жыл бұрын
Pat Flanigan They talked about this in their recent album announcement livestream. Gavin Mixes his own drums and sends them over to Bruce, who mixes everything else. Their keyboard player Steve masters their albums. This is a prime example of how sometimes the ear of an outsider can be useful.
@PatFlanigan
@PatFlanigan 4 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! But what I mean by “mixing” is actively thinking about limb and instrument volume as I perform. For example, in a small club, I wouldn’t hit on the cymbals like a maniac. Or in studio, in a verse, I’d play my bass drum and snare softer than in the chorus (if the song called for that).
@jejdigo
@jejdigo 4 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. I really think in this case it's just how he has it mic'd up. It's not as prominent on the album and I don't recall it being that prominent when I saw them live last year. I acknowledge live shows are a different animal entirely.

The roll from the right to left, which hand leads? Left or right?
@TwoandaHater
@TwoandaHater 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on how the kit is set up and what you are trying to do. If you are right handed and play in the traditional set up (hh on left, low toms on the right) and you are doing a typical 16 or 32nd note fill that ends when a bar ends but going up the toms- you would lead with your left hand.
@PatFlanigan
@PatFlanigan 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Going down, you'd lead with your right; going up you'd lead with your left. Otherwise there would be a bunch of unnecessary arm-crossing. Practicing fills with your left hand isn't easy (for most right-handed drummers), which shows just how good Gavin is!

I disagree with your implication that Gavin is playing those hi-hat notes because he's "excited". I think that's an intentional stylistic choice. Certainly OK to disagree with it, but I think it's kind of diminishing what he's doing by implying that he's not in control of what he's playing.
