I DIDN’T MEAN “GENERIC” AS IN “GENERIC”! RELAX, PEOPLE! 🤣 I actually don’t remember what I meant. Probably that without Carter, DMB wouldn’t be the same and could fall into the "generic" alt-pop/adult-pop category... Those who were triggered by that comment need to know that A) English isn’t my fist language. B) These interventions are improvised so it's quite likely that the odd word or expression that doesn't mean exactly what I want to say slips in as I try to keep my explanations short and straight-forward so that people don't get bored and click away. And C) DMB is one of my favourite bands of all time and they are not a "generic" band. There. We cool, now? I love y’all! 😅

No offense taken, loved the video. I would also say that, in addition to Carter, LeRoi Moore was a defining member of the band. His saxophone playing was so soulful. I think a saxophone player would react similarly to him as you do to Carter. LeRoi is sorely missed. They are still a great and fun band, but they have strayed from their jazz influenced roots. Thanks for the great video.

One of the coolest things I’ve seen was Carter using his left hand to push an out of control mic boom out of his face while playing live on Letterman. I don’t know how difficult it was but it looked effortless and impossible at the same time.
@UncleRicoOSU
@UncleRicoOSU 7 ай бұрын
That’s just his vocal mic. It’s set up so it swivels around his head. He can move it in front of his face when he needs to sing backup parts and then knock it out of the way when he’s done. It’s a cool setup.

Let me just say this real quick. I had the pleasure of working the DMB show at Alpine Valley 2019. I got to sit at monitor position for the show and had my own monitor mix on headsets. Carter is not only one of the best drummers I’ve seen, but one of the funniest guys EVER!!! It sounded like he was mic’ed up so he can call changes while jamming and only the band can hear in their monitors. He also is talking shit and cracking up the band during the whole show, only the band can hear him. Great guy! Great Drummer!!

Fun fact. That china stack on the right of Carter's kit, isn't an actual stack. Both of the china cymbals are facing the normal ways, one is a 20" and the other is a 22", the 22" is being used as a baffle to the 20". Carters tech said they did this to protect the violin player Boyd's ears if they were playing on smaller stages.

Reminds me a lot of Simon Phillips, another beast who plays open. Another excellent video, Pat! And thanks for the message to Brazilians (which I am) at the beginning of the video! Cheers!

@@MsWizard420 Well, I've never really taken drum classes or formally studied drumming in any way. So when I say a drummer influenced me, it's mostly listening to the songs they play and trying to copy their style (but without copying the songs themselves, of course).

I want to thank you for your explanation open hand and cross hand. I'm not a drummer, I've always been the guy next to the kit on the "other" string instrument! I've heard the term but had no real idea what it meant. I've also heard a few high quality folks from the percussion kit rave about his unique advantage of being ambidextrous now I can see how and why (one aspect) of what makes him better than most (maybe even all!).

I also taught myself to be able to play with both cross and open handed about 2 years ago, and it is relatively easy if you put some work into it. it brings all the benefit when i needed especially not losing hi hat stroke when doing simple fills. i only have one ride cymbal, so i still ride with my right hand. another benefit is we can switch hand in the middle of a song and 'rest' the other already intense hand (in this case usually right hand for doing too much hi hat works).

this is so cool. So I'm kind of right handed but have learned that I can use both hands. I learned to play drums early on as was a fan of The Monkees(drummer was right handed but played lefty drums-ish) and a band named Petra( he was a righty that was an open hander). and I learned to play both cross and open but prefer open. like Carter I learned how to use each extremity on their own. left foot handles both bass drum and hi hat. My right learned how to double bass. cos I only had one kick. and same with my hands. It takes hours and hours pf practice and learning how to use each part independently. Carter is the perfect example of this.

I started taking drum lessons when I was 12. My teacher was a righty, I am a lefty. We were in a tiny closet, and any time he would show me a rudiment or groove he would rearrange the kit for me to play lefty cross stick. It wasn't until much later on KZfaq I came across Carter's video and saw open hand and things really clicked. It's definitely the most natural feel for me

Thanks for this video! One of my brothers was a studio drummer and he was born in 1959 and I was born in 1966 and I remember growing up listening to him practicing but it wasn’t just about practicing drums and studying music theory. It’s called music business and in the 70’s it was a handful of record producers who decided who got record contracts and played on the radio. Musicians now can self-publish and I think that’s great because we can see and hear a lot of new styles and techniques from all over the world. Don’t get me wrong, I learned a lot about drumming from my brother and I’ve seen Carter 4 times so far! To me the worst word in the world is “best” because taste is subjective. I have playlists based on moods so how do I compare Carter against The Professor, Portnoy, Chambers, Colaiuta, Bozzio or many others? Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr never get mentioned on a Top 10 list because they didn’t play progressive or dynamic styles but there are no Stones or Beatles cover bands because it’s very hard to play a shuffle beat for 3 minutes without losing the count or tempo, and those guys did that for entire concerts for years! There’s something to learn and respect from everyone!

I watched these videos approximately 9,000 times when they were released on VHS :) For a couple decades, I was certain Carter Beauford must actually be left-handed, due to the fact that in these videos, he leads with his left foot as well when playing double bass licks. It seems his body defaults to left-handedness! (And he doesn't specifically say if he's right or left-handed in these videos). My mind was absolutely blown when I saw a fan's video where he signed an autograph, and he signed it with his right hand! Can't get enough of this guy. These videos are as amazing now as when I got them in 1996 :)

DMB knows that the more people who CAN access their music....the larger their fanbase. It's VERRRY well know DMB's taper culture was HUGE. Metallica came along and cried and whined because they weren't able to bilk the whole planet for money!! It turned out to be a massive egg on the face for Metallica. Many fans said wait you care more about your money than your fans?? BYE! At least I did I never bought anything Metallica after that. DMB is always great music.

Great vid to start. So my thing is I am also ambidextrous. When I taught my self to play drums I didn’t feel the cross style made sense. It’s well known that doing different rhythms with the same side of the body is hard to do. So I almost immediately abandoned and went to open hand on my own. I will say this tho I get his style. Because I will never be able to have left/right setup like him, but there times where I prefer to do things either way. Like when I played little league, I would catch a ball in my left hand then want to throw it with my left hand which I couldn’t do. But better yet open hand seems it would be easier for left or right hand people so why is that not a more popular thing?

I love, love, love this cover. It’s overplayed compared to the Album version. (Listen to the Album version for the slightly delayed snare hit when the solo starts). As you said all his amazing hits, fills during the song are amazing. There is a couple out of time things. I’ve read there was a amazing click track by Steve Lilly white on this album that he refused to let anybody else use. My fav part is at 7.47 when he goes to 8th note down beat high hat. Then totally explodes with a fill into the Fiddle solo. So much control and expression. The rest of the song is a masterclass in over playing. But it’s his band, drum video. So who cares. He plays with power, speed, style, groove and precision.

You analyze the drummer in a really appropriate way and you don't overreact like in many reaction videos where it feels like a complete sham. Thank you for these drummer commentaries and keep it up! :) Cheers, Martin

Great videos dude! I would LOVE to see you reacting to Elliot Hoffman. He's unbelievable tight at live, for the music that he plays with his band, Car Bomb \../\../

man....I can watch Carter play drums allll dayyy. So frickin good. And how dare you say DMB is "generic!!" (lol...i kinda get it, but I love 'em).

Dude using the word “generic” killed me in this vid haha! It’s cause I cover so much metal on these react vids that my usual crowd probably finds this band boring and soft, while in actuality they’re one of the most unique bands out there! Idk why I called ‘em “generic”... hard to keep up with what I say during those little rants while the video is paused!

Fun fact: carter first learned to play left handed as he set up his kit mirrored and then when he realized it he set it up right handed. That’s why he plays open handed.

Thanks for the tip, but the minute I use copyrighted content, the whole video gets claimed... so I’m screwed either way!
