Can someone give the medical definition of what pneumothorax is?

A pneumothorax is also called an atelectasis, and it occurs when the parietal pleura is punctured or when the alveoli in the lungs are damaged. The fluid bond between the parietal layers is broken and a collapsed lung may result. Treatment involves removing air and sealing the opening or puncture.
