Spider webs in the pilot tube and a faulty tilt switch can be two reasons why an outdoor patio heater pilot light won't start or stay lit. The repair of both is discussed.

*Install was easy **fireplace.homes** good although I personally had some difficulty with the thermostat I had. Issue was mine though, not realizing that electric heaters couldn't use oil thermostats. Tip: If you are using an external thermostat, run the power to the thermostat, not the unit. Once that was squared away it worked great.*

Add me to the list of another "tilt-switch bypass" success stories! I was getting pretty bummed. I'd already disassembled and reassembled the heater once, thinking the "obstructed gas-feed tube" dilemma was the problem. Problem was, I bit off on the fact that that youtube video's success stories were almost 100%.....Didn't work. I felt like throwing in the towel. Especially after I went down the thermocouple repair rabbit hole for awhile. Then i found your video. I didn't even have to disassemble anything. Just open the grating at the control area, see the tilt-switch (obvious), and then connect the two wires together. BAM! fire! Thank you!

OMG it worked!! My patio heater died a few years ago - it just wouldn’t turn on. I got the pilot going but then as soon as I start pushing down the knob it stopped. I was looking for new heaters when I came across your easy to follow video. And it worked! I removed the two wires from the tilt detector, cut the ends off, stripped the ends of the wires, and connected them together with one of those little caps that you screw on to connect them. Now it works great! Thank you!

Thanks a lot for this very useful video! I found that the tilt switch sells for $15 online. I now know how to diagnose my problem. You focused on two essential parts of heater and identified them, which was the key. Great job!

Echo the sentiments of others here: thanks for posting. The tilt switch bypass was the key. As for a 'piece of metal' to jumper the two tilt switch wires, I just broke off the side tang on the switch, filed the fat end down a bit with a Dremel, and inserted it into the two connectors. Thanks again!

I went through 3 different videos which didn’t solve my problem since they focused on simpler problems than the tilt switch, but this one covered all the bases and did the trick!

You are the man! Took off one panel by the control knob. connected two wires of the tilt switch and the heater works fine! Reminds me of a problem with a 93 Jeep Gand Cherokee. Would not start. Dealer had it for a week and couldnt find the problem. Local mechanic also stumped until I suggested replacing the ignition coil, I would pay for it. Next day he called and offered me a job! Coil tested OK but the Mexican coil was defective anyway. (This was not the first time the coil had to be replaced, Not my skill but painful past experience)

I picked up one of these heaters for free that someone left on the curb. It wouldn't light but after watching this video I was able to fix it. Turned out that the pilot light tube was completely plugged with corrosion. A plastic zip tie worked great to unplug the tube. It's stiff enough to unclog it but flexible enough to pass thru the bends in the tube. Thanks for the great video!

Brilliant!! Thanks to you my wife has renewed admiration for me as her favorite fix-it man. Totally nailed the problem & the fix was a snap. A tip for others who, like me, may have every other POS in the garage but not a small piece of metal to join together (bypass) the tilt switch electrical leads, those small angled picture hangers are the perfect solution (even I had a few). Just snip off the tail end long enough to fit in both electrical connectors & you’re in business. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your experience!! Gotta love KZfaq.

Thanks Brad, really useful video. I checked the switch on a digital multimeter (set resistance to 200k) and I got a 1 signal back suggesting the switch had tripped. I took it apart snd repositioned the ball bearing on the spring and this time it weighted the switch down. Job done! I also adjusted the position of the copper pilot gas tube in the Venturi pipe. It was getting too much air in the mix so I pushed the tube a little further up inside the Venturi pipe and it worked a treat. I spent two hours trying to remedy all these things before I stumbled upon your video and the tilt switch idea. Many thanks, you save this heater from going in the skip!

Dude...... thank you. So many people probably just throw these away like I almost did thinking that the valve was simply Chinese garbage and time but another...... all I had to do with mine was blow out the pilot line with my air compressor cuz of spiderwebs/debris like you said. The pilot wouldn’t stay on, therefore the thermal coupler wouldn’t stay hot and it would shut off. I didn’t even know what a thermal coupler and tilt switch were before this video.....👍🏻

Thank you so much! I have a Hiland heater that looks just like yours. Like you, my pilot light would light, but would go out as soon as I let go of the button. Bypassed it just like you, and now it works great. Thanks!

Yup. Tilt switch. My heater is a little 34" high tabletop style; a little different than the full-sized one, but I located the very small tilt switch (nearly hidden & inaccessible) above the main valve in the base. The giveaway was the two wires (with wire connectors) that you pointed out. Unplugged them, cut off the connectors, twisted the two wires together, wrapped them with a piece of electrical tape & good to go. Thanks, Brad!

Nice! This was my problem exactly! Thanks to your video, it took 10 min to fix instead of hours of troubleshooting. Actually, I probably would have just junked the heater or bought a new one. The symptom I was having was: I could start and get a flame, but as soon as I released the gas (knob pressure), the flame/heat would go off. Could not light pilot. After your nifty trick of bypassing the "tip protection device", it works great!!! Cheers!

The tilt switch consists of a metal ball that pushes down on a lever to actuate the switch below it. By simply reforming the metal actuator lever that pushes down on the switch, you will solve your problem and still have the tilt safety feature. Disassembly usually just involves removing 2 screws that mount the safety switch then 1 screw and 2 plastic clips (some may just have plastic clips and no screw) that hold the switch assembly together. Once inside you will see the components I mentioned...the ball up top, the lever it pushes on, and the switch below. It's a relatively simple fix.
