I literally paused your video, went to the patio, pulled off the back panel and did exactly what you showed to bypass the thermocouple. Five minutes later and my heater is working again! Thank you so much. I know that the thermocouple is there to make sure that when there’s no flame, there is no gas present. However, we only use this heater when we are sitting on the patio. I am sure we will know if the flame goes out! So I had no issues removing that thermocouple. It definitely helped that I had the same model heater that you are showing. Everything was where you said and it worked out beautifully. Thank you for your time in recording it. You just saved me a bunch.

Another heater saved from a landfill! The company I work for threw one of these 3 foot tall heaters in the dumpster. I dusted it of and pulled it apart but couldn't get it lit. I modified the regulator like you explain and now it works great. I don't even need a space heater i just like to fix stuff and keep things out of the trash. Gonna pass this off to a friend.

Terrific advice--I have four patio heaters, all different models. Following your lead, I found and disabled the thermo-couplers on my Fire Sense and Uniflame heaters successfully. I suspect most patio heaters have similar internals so fixing the other two should follow the same procedure. What a great way to avoid throwing these guys into the landfill. Thank You!

The video implies that the "Tilt Switch" is still active and hasn't been removed. However it, TOO, is disabled because it simply breaks the continuity that the thermocouple probe generates (heat and metals doing science things creating a low-voltage charge) to hold open the thermocouple valve with a tiny electro magnet. So know that this method will certainly allow your patio heater to work, but NO safety precautions are in play any longer. The gas will NOT SHUT OFF if the flame goes out or the tower tips over.

I found a tilt switch + thermocouple kit on Amazon for $10. Worth changing out. The tilt switch going bad is a common issue. It can be bypassed. The thermocouple senses if the pilot comes on. If it does, then it is safe to release gas on main flue. If you remove the thermocouple, the gas will flow regardless of whether heater lights up or not. What if you remove it, the heater is off, but your dog knocks it over in an enclosed patio. The gas might run, fill up the patio and house, and kaboom! Or... dog may die unable to get out. If the house goes kaboom and fire inspector determines the thermocouple was taken out of the heater,.... you may not be covered by insurance. Some things to consider. It might just be better to replace it, painful though it is. Fires happen. My house burned down. If it had been due to a $10 fix, I would have never forgiven myself.

At 5:20, you do not need to reinstall the thermocouple fitting back into the cap as it is no longer necessary. The electromagnet/solenoid cartridge will seal the back end of the valve when the cap is tightened (5:05). You can cut the thermocouple wires and remove the fitting if desired (or just tuck the wires and fitting off to the side).

Dude, the thing you just pulled the end off is the switch that shuts off the gas not the thermocouple. Its operated by the thermocouple which is beside the igniter above the pilot light flame and also by the tilt switch. Hence two lines that run into it. Your tilt switch wont do anything now so you can just bypass it anyways.

Nice video. I have a question ❓ I have only used mine 1 time. The wind did turn it over a good while back. I've got the heater working but when I turn the heat up to high, the flame won't get strong enough to make the top part red and it's not heating up like it should. Would you have any suggestions? Thank you
@charleskennemore8311
@charleskennemore8311 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the vid. I did a similar hack on my heaters. But one safety point. When the solenoid plunger is disabled the tilt switch no longer will turn off the gas when the heater is tilted. That works by disabling the circuit from the TC in the through the solenoid so the plunger is not retracted. We have removed the plug so it no longer works at all.

Excellent point and something I didn’t know. When it comes to lighting if it doesn’t go in the first few clicks I shut it off and wait a minute for the gas to dissipate. Thanks!

Is it possible to to separate my heater into two sections to transport it in a truck bed. I didnt assemble my heater my husband did so I am not sure how many pieces it has. Any tips or help are greatly appreciated. Thanks 😁
@Neighborly_Content
@Neighborly_Content 2 жыл бұрын
Technically it’s 4 pieces. The bottom where the tank is held, the stack pipe, the heater element (screened in section), and the hood. Most hoods are simple wing nuts on the top, the heater elements only connection to the unit is 2-3 screws and the regulator hose that runs down the pipe. The pipe is also held onto the tank base by only a few screws. Don’t forget it comes in a smallish box so everything is a simple screw or bolt, no harm breaking it down just take a few pics and bag up the parts.

@wendypettett7652 2 жыл бұрын
Not an expert so pardon my question. What are you removing from the thermocouple prior to reinstall? A cap? After modification, (removal of the spring and cap) then reinstall, it will no longer shut off the gas flow if the flame goes out.
@Neighborly_Content
@Neighborly_Content 2 жыл бұрын
This does impact fuel flow. Removing the cap and spring from the couple bypasses the shutoff so if your flame goes out gas will still flow. You need to monitor and keep an open eye. Again we use our heater for short stints so I’m always aware of the tank level and fuel flow. Propane is heavier so it does sink but if your having a problem keeping a flame then you may have another issue related to the valve assembly itself which is replaceable.

Hey 👋 Any idea Why my Heater is going thru propane Sooooo Fast?? (The Big Hampton bay 48000btu from Home Depot) Just bought it mid last wk, only used about 5 times; maybe 10-12 hrs total use on mostly low setting under four seasons patio; It’s Already gone thru 2 20 tanks!🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ (I know tanks were full bc I got them directly from Waring where my brother works & had his guys fill them)
@Bridgez777
@Bridgez777 2 жыл бұрын
Edit to add.. I’ve noticed ‘frost’ a few times on very bottom of tank on heater.. am I using too small of a tank to accommodate 48000btu..? Or do I just need to return this heater? I don’t know anything about gas/propane or these heaters .. All I know is my grill uses 20gal prp & has 4 big burners; we grill at least 3-4x a week & tank lasts almost a Month! & Nvr noticed ‘frost’.. Thanks in advance ~✌️💕☺️
@Neighborly_Content
@Neighborly_Content 2 жыл бұрын
From this and your reply it doesn’t sound entirely off. I can blast through a tank in 6-8 hours if I am on high. The trick here is these things don’t need to really be on full blast. I tend to keep mine at 1/2 to 3/4 most of the time. I may start off on high to just get it warmed up quick. I have 4 tanks at home 2 for the grill, 2 for the heater that I can rotate if needed. I also use a local place for fill up instead of the Blue Rhino stuff, those tanks are not topped off. The frost is normal, especially if it is damp or humid out.
