The final fight of the third Patlabor movie, and the only scene in the entire film that features the franchise's distinctive Ingram mecha. Also, please excuse the shitty subs at the bottom of the screen.

One of my all-time favorite scenes in anything ever. The juxtaposition of the calm and soothing music against the mecha VS monster fightscene on display while all the mature drama between the human characters plays out as its happening is just jaw-droppingly good. I get why alot of people criticize the film for not being Patlabor-y enough but to me, its fine. It feels like the perfect spin-off. If only it actually was a spin-off so folks wouldn't complain about it being a mainline movie that doesn't focus on the main cast of the series enough. The dark and gritty story and themes in the film culminating in this scene just hits all the notes for me. Edit: If you happened to come across this at complete random (wich seems unlikely, but hey) I highly recommend that you check out the Patlabor OVA series plus the 3 following animated movies. The OVAs and the first film are loads of light-hearted and fun action, while the second film is one of the best mecha action-thriller movies ever made. As for the third one: its special. And I love it.

Good lord, I've been looking for this movie for years. I remember watching this once while I was just flicking through the channels on TV as a kid. The monster's unstoppable determination always stuck with me.
The Patlabor series is so diverse in genres. The TV show and the OVAs are a slice of life mecha show. The first movie is a high stakes action flick. The second is a Tom Clancy-esque Political Thriller. And the third is a mystery sci fi horror.

What this film seems to boil down to is a mentally scarred scientist who happened to be working on a biological weapons program but she wanted to bring her child back (in a way) but instead created a giant monster that gets loose and kills. A little lacking in story but great atmosphere when we first see Wasted 13, so much tension.

i like how over the course of trying to find a suspect they discover a monster instead and gradually pick up clues on how to attract it and how to stun it. Its great bread crumbs writing that leads to a great climax and tragic conclusion.

It was completely intentional because she'll do anything for her daughter to live again, even if it means a rogue biological weapons broke out and munching people at night. You can see how absolutely devastated she was when she has to witness her "daughter" cornered and killed with its own memories.

For Hata and Kusumi (especially Hata) this may be a grand case, but for SV2 I guess this is just another day at the office; Noa and Ota didn't even break a sweat. But seeing Ota that calm is a pretty rare occasion indeed.

Indeed that always caught me off guard about this scene. Even on the second movie, a whole three years after the first one, he's still the hothead gun-nut we all knew while Noa grows past the whole "nerd who's in love with a robot phase". Wonder what happened to Ota for him to mature.

It is very sad that many prominent police characters in Patlabor always come so lonely, like the detective who lost his love one, or my guy Goto who can't reach Shinobu, I hope someday there is Patlabor series that give Goto some justice he deserve.
@pyroromancer Жыл бұрын
These men are dedicated detectives. They're the type that spend days on the job catching criminals and their family life suffers as a result. It's like Al Pacino's detective character in Heat. Went through several marriages and his current one is on the line because he's dedicated to the pursuit of justice. I think Goto knows this and keeps that distance.

also to include this story was part of the graphic novel series, (though the movie follows the detective's story than section 2) which parreled the TV and original video animations (OVA series). though it would be nice if there'd be a decent sequel series/movie. other than that Patlabor is personally one of the "most realistic" .

I kind of feel like it was more about the universe and reducing the labours to just mere tools, which is all that they are in the end.
@extraleague019 жыл бұрын
DaSpineLessFish The Patlabor franchise has always been more about the characters than the labors, but this movie went even further and reduced the main characters of the series, which I think was too much. I thought this movie was rather inappropriate as the last Patlabor feature, even if it's set before movie 2. Which is why I'm kinda glad the live-action Patlabor series is coming out, even if it's set years after the end of movie 2 and features a new generation of Patlabor members.
@DaSpineLessFish9 жыл бұрын
extraleague01 I do agree with your point, I loved the characters as they were unique and didn't feel tacked on, to me Patlabor will always be one of my favourites for years to come; but I don't think that this movie did anything bad. It may have been a step too far for some fans of the originals but I think it was a bold move with the plot, with abstract themes and extended metaphors.

Earnestly one of the most depressing anime movies I think I've ever seen, and that's keeping in mind Mamoru Oshii's other work. This whole climax is action-packed, but in a vaguely unpleasant way. It's like watching the cops show up and shoot someone dead in the street. It's not cool or thrilling, it just makes me feel kind of sick.
@elijahguest18854 ай бұрын
Surpringly this had no involvement from oshii, but it’s clearly emulating him I think it does it perfectly. It’s directed by Fumihiko Takayama only other note worthy things he’s worked on are Yamato 2199, and raxephon the movie where he did story composition and writing, and his only directors credit besides this is 10 episodes of the orignal super dimensional fortress macross. It’s a shame, just from this film alone you can tell he’s insanley talented I hope he writes or directs more stuff at some point.

An alright movie, but misleading. If you're going to put Patlabor in your title then SV2 should be more than just guest stars. At the very least some kind of Patrol Labor squad should be central to the plot. It's such a bait and switch and leaves fans of the series, who only watched it because it's part of Patlabor, feeling cheated.

@@cr-cn4ky patlabor 2 was a great watch but I'd be lying if I told you I actually understood Oshii's philosophical rambles that underpin the whole movie. Also Goto and Nagumo took center stage so that kind of eases the lack of labor combat a bit. I was admittedly a bit disappointed seeing the AV-2 Valiants just stand here and there during the military coup scene and then get gunned down inside SV2's hangar during the latter part of the film. You'd think they figured in more in the entire plot seeing as they're the successors to the Ingram. Essay aside, it's a great Oshii film, but a so-so Patlabor entry.

Anime Movie creators sat down one day and tried to come up with a cool story and IP universe. Thought of a detective sad sorta semi modern/sci fi world with some good soothing music. Thought of strange biological creature escape and out murdering people. Then realized it could be boring. Then thought hey! Lets set it in the Patlabor universe and try to keep people awake during the time showing some characters at a time to make it sorta surprising. Then don't do any Labor fights. Except at the end. 1 moment where it feels like Patlabor Then thought O Ya! We need some twisted Neon eva shit by making the mad scientist a woman who just wanted to bring her daughter back to life by making her dead body turn into a living sea monster! That could it into a Patlabor universe won't it!? Ha ha Great Idea! By the way add some 5:49 Tits the sea creature! I mean dead child that was resurrected as a sea monster! Great stuff! This Movie was boring, weird, sad, and pretty fucked up for the plot at the end.....still has some good animation and music. I gess I'll letthis film slide because of the tits.....WTF Anime!
