Patrick Okrasinski was born in New York City in 1996. Even as a young boy, he was consumed by drawing. The time he spent with his grandparents in the idyllic Polish countryside helped fuel his love of the natural world.
In the Fall of 2016 he found his way to the US branch of the Florence Academy of Art in Jersey City. There he was able to study at the highest levels of figurative painting, under the tutelage of Jordan Sokol, Amaya Gurpide, Stephen Bauman, Cornelia Hernes, and Edmond Rochat. As a student he won numerous prizes, including the ARC Scholarship Competition.
After graduating, he spent three months as Artist in Residence with the Claude Monet Foundation in Giverny, painting in Monet’s garden and the surrounding French countryside.
In 2020 he was awarded the prestigious Donald Jurney Travelling Fellowship Grant for the purpose of travelling and painting the great historic and cultural centers of Europe. In light of the pandemic, this adventure was postponed, and he instead turned to painting the local landscape of the North East, and winning multiple awards in National Juried Shows.
In 2021, he was awarded the Hudson River Fellowship at Wethersfield, a collaborative fellowship that brings together classically trained artists to study and paint nature for three weeks. Later that summer, he painted and traveled Europe, thanks to the Donald Jurney Travelling Fellowship.

This interview with Patrick, like every interview of at least 8 that I have watched recently, is excellent. The amount of info, the balance between their personal experiences, their professional habits, insights always seems to be very satisfying. Jeff's skill and demeanor HAS to be a key element in that. I've seen enough interviews now and watched Jeff closely. He knows when to wait, when to prod, and has the perfect reactions. Modest reactions. Yet he interjects the most appropriate and technically astute comments that drives the interview forward with a natural smooth motion. No speedbumps. Yes, he is a natural at this! Excellent!

Having painted portraits and still lifes for 15 years, I now am painting landscapes more and more. I could relate to this webcast because I truly think that landscapes are way more complex than setting up a model or still life. That said, my passion is to represent the beauty of Creation in a way that is believable. Patrick explained how he arrives at a variety of greens and capturing scenes in plein air very well Thank you Jeff and Patrick. Really got a lot from this.

At 1:39:18 Patrick mentions cupping his hand to make a hole to look through to examine color. At age 20, that is something I learned from Paul Lipp during a still life class one-on-one session at the Paier School of Art in 1976. With that “trick”, you isolate the color you want to match- or find the properties, at the same time that blocks out the surrounding colors from altering your view. And once you have the color, remove your cupped hand to examine the value in relation to your overall painting. It’s brilliant. And quick! Patrick is impressive.

Iv'e been painting landscapes close to 50 years. Started out Winslow Homer impressionistic for the 1st 30 years. Made a lot of the same perspective mistakes that Patrick talks about. Was after I took an advanced photography class from a great professor that I truly understood perspective. The basic rules are the same. Except the greatest rule for photography is to move closer and then move closer. I tend to paint what I see (leaning Realist). Except I also paint how things make me feel. "brings about softer shapes and harder edges in various areas" It's not intentional. The mind can see what it wants of what the eyes are viewing, once you get that far into loving nature. As far as doing your family portraits, I suggest doing yourself a great favor by first doing a soft pastel. I did really well at portrait competition early on. Except my soft pastels always took the show. Oil portraits are great. Except oil has a plasticity when compared side by side with soft pastel. IMO, if you need to capture your love for your children, go soft! I'm old as hell, I know nothing1

Too many complicated words for beginners. All you need is 5 colors and you can make any color almost. " Mark Carder " teaching painting has to be simple. His work is amateur. His portraits are flat. He needs to study with a master guy maybe Joseph McGurl. He should be not teaching but studying. Some people pay 1000 dollars to learn ???
