I just got home from a NH to OR camping and painting, 8 week trip. Exhausting. Oddly, I found that the high stress of it depressed my ability to paint. In the evenings, I watched all your episodes that I downloaded (usually I had no service). I learned a lot. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for doing these videos. I realized I was not taught how to paint, though I have a BS in art and an MFA. Self taught, means holes in one’s education. I mean to close them.

I appreciate you noticing that. You’re right. I am Christian and agree that we shouldn’t love sin. As the interviewer it’s the guests opinion that I’m interested in so I try to be careful not to insert my own opinions and ideals. Instead I try to learn what the guests thinks. It’s about them. If you want to understand more about copper panels, watch KZfaq video on copper panels by @artefex : they go into technical details but very good explanation. They gave me a sample to use and i used it for a sunset Plein Air painting which turned out very lovely, especially if your painting benefits from warm undertones.

“Fear of being separated from the herd and fear of the unknown” - a driving force behind humanity and our fears. Also, talking about nonfiction books about evil, I just couldn’t get through Elie Wiesel’s book “Night” - too disturbing. Mr Devonas emanates empathy and sensitivity. I love the point you both made about creating art is not just making a good drawing or painting, but using those skills to tell a meaningful story. I listen to the Undraped Artist on my hour-long commute to work in the morning and then on the way home. Love it Jeff!!

@@theundrapedartist Tell me about it... Even worse is if I have a commission I dont really want to do, Im incapable of doing any other painting until that is done, BUT I will postpone doing the commission up until the very last moment, thus wasting a lot of time that could have been spent painting or drawing. This was a great ep and made me not feel so bad about my self. I really am a terrible boss. Ill let myself get away with murder in the moment, but then Ill come down on myself like a ton of bricks and the self loathing knows no bounds! Thanks to podcasts like this its getting better though. Before the printing press books were copied by hand. Lines were drawn for placing letters, with a piece of lead, on the vellum, hence the “leading” term in typography. The execution of 5 million men and women for witchcraft was as hideous as what the Nazis did. Many were healers who were in direct competition with the church, for the money and goods people paid them for health care.

I am a painting conservator and can answer the paintings conservation question: copper supports last for longer as the copper does not absorb moisture and the support does not expand or contract- i.e.this means the paint layer doesn't move over time. Many wooden supports (and latterly canvas supports) up until the nineteenth century were renowned for cracking because the support expands and contracts with moisture, but ALSO from the addition of rabbit skin glue traditionally used in the gesso ground. Rabbit skin glue is notorious for absorbing moisture. Imagine the ground layer absorbing and contracting as well as the wooden/canvas support doing the same. Those paintings I worked on with BOTH issues, often has paint flaking off them within 150 years, sometimes sooner. The copper paintings I worked on from renaissance times, were still perfect- only the varnish had yellowed and gone brittle.

Thank you, jus purchased my first copper panel from Raymar to try it out and someone said you have to varnish quickly? is that correct?
@AlyssaAleksanian7 күн бұрын
@@juliafoley5573 Im not sure if you mean varnish it soon after you finish your painting, OR varnish it in a rapid motion...? I have seen many copper paintings that are unvarnished and the paint layer is excellent. Back then, they were only using linseed oil as a medium- no modern chemicals. The copper causes less 'sinking' of colours, so, using a good ratio of medium (linseed) to paint, the surface can be saturated for many years without varnish. Varnishing came later- many varnishes used in the nineteenth century yellowed over time and had to be removed anyway. Removing the varnish on these copper paintings revealed a perfect, saturated surface. If you dont need to varnish- dont varnish. Varnishing has become an obsession with modern painters. But if you wish to varnish, application of varnish o a copper panel has the same rules as any other support.

With all my respect to Dr. Christensen, never did Rubens copy a painting either from Caravaggio , Titian, Michelangelo or Raphael....but like all great masters before him , he was simply and naturally influenced by what was done before him...Rubens art ressembles to none...the father of Flamish baroque has elevated the art of painting to its peak by integrating Flemish realism with Venetian colors and, icing on the cake, by inferring a dynamism and energy never seen before !
