Patrick Stewart is presented with a newspaper article from the very newspaper he would be working for as a junior reporter 15 years later. The article explains his fathers return from Cherbourg of which he is titled 'Sergeant' Alfred Stewart. As well as his new rank Patrick soon learns about his father's acquired shell shock. This intrigues Patrick as to the impact shell shock might have had on his father's domestic life.

The way his voice cracked when he read "shell-shock" is absolutely heartbreaking. But I am so glad he got some answers, and hope he got some measure of closure from them.

concussion can cause personality changes, anger etc plus add the PTSD - that explains his fathers behavior

His mother must have known his father as a different person before the war and known he was damaged and changed afterwards. At some stage Alfred must have known he was shell shocked as the newspaper reported it. He either told the reporter or there was an offical medical record of it somewhere.

My grandfather served in WWII. He always tried to be cheerful, would never talk about the war, but their were many occasions when you could look into his eyes, and know that some part of him was still on that beach.

Same and mine was only a medic, didn't see much fighting but heard a great deal of it. All he really would talk about is how cruel explosives were and didn't really go into any detail and always changed the subject when asked about his time in Africa (he was stationed in that campaign, not Europe... maybe that was for the best as Europe was significantly more brutal)

I think all who were a part of the horrors of WW2 had some sort of PTSD. i can relate to Patrick here..My father who was a vet as well struggled with alcoholism to which the family had issues with...He overcame the booze to his credit but some of those scars are permanent...It wasn't until on his death bed did he relate the horrors he had seen that would drive any sane man to the drink.. He passed away and the truth of it all vindicated and healed all that past hurt... Remember that the next time you see a homeless vet or any vet who struggles with mental issues, that they have witnessed the worst part of humanity and have to live with it every day.

I am glad he found about his father, more about what his father did during the War. This Shell-shock, and how it changes people's behavior, may explain his father's "anger" as Patrick Stewart called it.

I can sympathize with Patrick wanting to know the root of his father's anger. Many children born of war veterans have seen first hand what shell-shock and PTSD do to a human. My father's PTSD and anger was like walking on eggshells. The unpredictable behavior of a war veteran is hard to comprehend, and I feel for them. All veterans need therapy when they experience horrifying trauma of war and to find some kind of absolution. I hope Patrick's father found atonement in the afterlife.

Chanel Coco Patrick Stewart needs to write this story as a human drama movie because I would definitely go see it. It might explain other dads' behaviour that were affected by "shell shock". My dad was a WWII vet from Texas and passed in 2015. We got your back Britain. 👍

To think that Martin Freeman’s grandfather and Patrick Stewart’s father were at Dunkirk around the same time. The former died but the latter survived.

I can totally see them both charging for the final clash but former sacrificed saving the later. Cut.. then scene changes to modern times when both the actors met for the first time and movie ends there.

It was this that started me to think about my own Dad. He too was prone to violent outbursts. Most of these were directed at me,although he never hit me. It was pure rage sometimes and very unwarranted. I wish I had seen this before my Mum suffered from Alzheimer's and passed away. I would have asked her about this but,I feel she would have denied it.She had told me when I was young that he had been sent home because of arthritis. I never saw any signs of this.

Mainly from being exposed to other ways of thinking and opinions that someone in an echo chamber might not have heard before and thus are shocking to them. It's the same reasons why we have Safe Spaces in colleges and universities. People literally feel theatened by dscourse that is outside of an academic setting or outside of their close social bubble. I didn't think it existed either, but I have heard people say they've had it from social media.

Everyone and everything is great... until you talk to people directly affected by the effect no one should be dealing with... and it will happen again and again until someone says STOP! But by then it's too late. Welcome to 2023.
