Here's another tip for you woodwind players trying to get more a more "mature" sound on the horn! This video is geared more towards beginners/intermediate players - but check yourself even if you think you've got it down! Most of my content so far has been pretty long, but I wanted to try my hand at shorter, to-the-point videos like this that don't go super in-depth but at least get your foot in the door with some usually mysterious techniques. Hope you dig it!
What are some other simple/more advanced techniques you'd like to learn about? Let me know, and it might end up in a video!

I think an important thing to note that helped me was at 5:08-5:15 you are not only changing the airflow but the amount of mouthpiece in your mouth.

Pat - great stuff, as always. Suggestion - could you make a video where you outline some specific aspects of different saxophone players' sounds/style that have influenced you over the years? Like the way so and so played the blues...or the way so and so played a ballad...I'm just trying to get the ball rolling. Love all the content, keep it up!

You’re a great teacher, Pat. I’ve been changing my embouchure a bit to sub tone - gonna try doing it without. Thanks!

I have been watching your videos for a little bit and I just watched a video from 8 years ago where wynton Marsalis teaches young musicians and I just realized that that was you in the video. Great job! ❤

Subtone is the removal of upper partials from the sound…..

thank you Patrick, I am wondering maybe you can make a video about what beginner should be practicing, like sound ( what to achieve ), technique ( what we should be doing when we practice technique ), harmony - music ( making phrase, improvising, ear training ) as a beginner - intermediate. What is your practice routine? thank you.

For sound at least (for a beginner/intermediate) the best thing to do is find a player who's sound you love and try to emulate it. Then you can change your sound and make your own voice from there. For me as a baritone player my role model is Pepper Adams, but recently I've been listening to more Gerry Mulligan and Leo Parker.

The camera had to focus on that copy of Mark Levine's lexicon back there!!! I am loving this stuff, and hope there is more coming on the nuanced techniques of saxophone embouchure and beyond! PS. I find myself trailing flat very often when subtoning--especially at the bottom of my range. It might be what you explained at --4:33-- that I am doing wrong- any suggestions?

Thanks for this short video on subtone Pat! I realized that you are using a new saxophone and was wondering what model it is? It look like a SBA neck with a MarkVi left hand lol or is it a Ishimori alto? just curious haha Hope your move to Japan is going smooth !? I have a friend that move during pandemic and seems to really enjoy the culture over there and the level of the musicians too! cheers Pat

A different and ridiculously simple technique from what is generally prescribed for subtone. I am not a qualified saxophonist but having being directly involved in woodwind refurbishing for more than fifty years I have developed some skill in playing. I am able to play whisper soft on tenor and alto but all my desperate attempts, spread on and off for more than ten years, to be able to subtone have not yielded the desired breathy sound, the essentially distinct aspect of this type of sound. I do think that the mouthpiece reed combination does have an important if not the exclusively determining factor in subtone production. Some information , advice, suggestions on this aspect of the subject would I think be much appreciated by the huge number of would be subtoners who have been struggling and continue to in their efforts to subtone. Thank you.

This is a great video Patrick! Im actually in the opposite situation where my subtone sound is developed but it is hindering my classical progress😅. This video showed me that it’s really just the airflow that differentiates between the two and that is what I’ve been missing when struggling between my jazz and classical sounds!

I don’t know if this is only me, but this is easier for me when I pull my chin back slightly, almost like I’m trying to create an overbite.

With further reference to my earlier two comments. First thank you for your most enigmatic one word reply “what” the meaning of which was and is totally beyond my understanding. I mentioned that the subtone as demonstrated could by no means be referred to as a subtone as it was totally lacking the breath or air sound. The subtone as demonstrated is of course a proper classical subtone as this type does not incorporate breath or air sounds. Would you or could you graciously demonstrate and instruct just how breath or air sounds might be incorporated into the subtone as produced by you. All the very best and thank you most sincerely.

As a clarinet main and Alto doubler I was extremely triggered by the blasphemy of that one statement you made about the non effectiveness of sub tone on clarinet. PeepoRiot 😂 just kidding, just kidding. Great tutorial! Very well explained. Love your videos SeemsGood 👍

An essential characteristic of the subtone is the sound of the air stream which according to some experts amounts to about half of the audio output. The subtone as demonstrated in the video lacks this essential characteristic and so just cannot be considered a true subtone . The subject of the subtone is something quite beyond rocket science or even quantum physics. There are as many different and totally contradictory methods for subtone playing as there are saxophonists and this has been so ever since the discovery of the subtone whose history and origin is not to be found in any historical account of the art or craft of saxophone playing.
