EP 57 Solo Sail Bermuda to St Pierre, France

  Рет қаралды 65,039

Күн бұрын

I sail a 1000 NM passage in fairly sporty conditions from Bermuda to two small French islands off the southern coast of Newfoundland (St Pierre et Miquelon). I discuss/demo my technique for putting in a reef while headed downwind (and welcome ways to improve). As I approach Newfoundland, an aggressive front arrives at the same time, and rather than argue with mother nature, I hove to (park at sea) for 18 hours.

Hello Patrick, I have two ideas for you. The lazy jack lines along your main sail are hanging around. Open the system, put the lines around a clamp at the mast and tighten them. No more hanging around, no more noisy sounds from them…… when you need them just open them again. Second safety Idea for all solo sailors. The furler line stowed over the reeling, do it always the other way around, so when you grab it not from the outside, no from the inside from the cockpit. You donˋt have to lean over. Cheers Anthony

Patrick, amazing. You are, as always, an inspiration! Very impressive. I would love to see a summary of your views on Alessia vs Isabelle. What does it feel like to transition to smaller faster performance cruiser under sail. Perhaps also the differences in heavy weather. If already covered in the comments, I apologise for missing it. You have spoken about downwind performance but what about other aspects? Anyway thank you for these amazingly interesting videos!

I am also looking forward to these comments. I noticed that you were not able to do some decent cooking with the arrival of the front. Would that have been different on your Bavaria? In general, is the Bongo more demanding on the crew than your previous boat. What about all the loose items on the shelves in the saloon. Doesn´t it bother you, compared to tidy Isabelle? Thanks for your videos. They are really inspiring! Regards. Adrian

Hi Patrick. I luved the weather and the stern facing view as your ship glided along effortlessly. Even on camera the speed was exciting to watch. I am inspired. We have had a cool and somewhat damp spring on the west coast of Canada so I was excited to see clear blue skies and warm weather. Great vlog of the passage Patrick. Reefing the main when downwind is fine in a smaller craft and lighter breezes. I always found it helped to ease the main sheet, harden the topping lift then haul in the main sheet. Then when you wind in the reefing line you don't have to fight unnecessary pressure as the new cringle comes easily onto the boom. Best wishes, John.

Always enjoy your videos because they are primarily about sailing conditions, techniques, and gear. Having singlehanded from New England to Bermuda five times it was great to see you visit a place I’ve also experienced. The one quick scan of St. George’s harbor hardly does Bermuda justice. That old wreck you were moored behind had been a prison ship, hence the description of the portion of St. George’s harbor you were in is known as Convict Bay. Good luck on your continuing adventures.

Thanks for demonstrating some sail handling, if my boat had that open transom, all the tools/supplies you showed would be overboard via the transom! My boat has 2 slots in the transom to dewater the cockpit, I can drop a screwdriver on the bow and it will eventually bounce through one of the 2 slots overboard.

I love that you filmed the reefing process. We do mostly lake sailing on a Tanzer 22, but will be moving to the Caribbean soon and buying a larger boat. Your knowledge and insights are wonderful!

Hats off to NKE nav gear. No denying its best. There is a good reason why you find it onboard the vast majority of ocean racing vessels.

Absolutely. I'm embarrassed that I did not master the system before leaving, but the 'automatic' settings took very good care of me. :-)

Well done Patrick. Was hoping you were sticking around the east coast for a while, we’re leaving next week from Toronto for that way but I know you don’t sit still for long. Fair winds to the great country of Ireland. Cheers.

@@patricklaine6958 It's a great adventure, well done on the on-a-whim Atlantic crossing. I'd love to go to Bermuda and see all that colourful Georgian architecture but yes i heard it costs a fortune.
