I sail across the North Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland in early July 2022. I am very fortunate in my selection of wx window, as the passage is almost like a Trade Wind passage (except the cold and fog). I discuss the issues of "seaworthiness" and the pros and cons of removeable forestays. I ask whether one should motor through a low wind zone, or sit it out. The passage took 13 days.

This is the first video I've watched on this channel. I've sailed a bit over my lifetime but yet to do an ocean passage. I'm 37, plan to start sailing full-timeish in a bit over a year, and I sometimes feel I've started too late. So you, Bill, are an inspiration to me. I wish I'd taken the brave leap about 12 years ago when I first heard the sea calling to me. But better late than never and better now (or close to) than at some fuzzy point in the future

Congratulations Patrik on another insightful video. What I most like about your videos is your calm and clear analysis of all situatiins, from the pros and cons of inner forestays to when to reduce sails. You make it all look so easy because you have thought through as much as you can to reduce stress on both you and the boat. Such an education, I really appreciate all your videos and knowledge, thank you.

I agree with Jason, Patrick. I was raised by my mother who as a single parent wanted me to sail in my youth. But all my friends had power boats, and I expressed that. I dabbled with power boats, but now at 76 I bought a new Com-Pac 23 Pilothouse and named it "Late Start". In honor of my Mother I have named the diesel inboard after her...."Melva". I'm sure she's smiling from "behind the door". Also, like Jason, you are one of the best at telling of your joy on the water. Thank you for the inspiration....Bob

You are an hero. Hundreds of thousands of people your age and younger stay at home with the TV remote control doing nothing. You enjoy life. - Rest reassured that your Mother knows your name and loves you. She is not here with you, but no matter where she is, she hears you. Lastly, don’t spend one second replying stupid comments about your boat. You have the most advance electronics, you doubled all the key elements of the boat and you have spares. In addition, you have the harness with you at all times, I see the yellow life-lines. Youu have a huge reserve of diesel, food for months. Your boat is seaworthy and you have the skills and knowledge. Congratulations for doing what you do and for inspiring thousands of people, being me one of them.

There was an article in the Guardian yesterday about the brothers who setup the company, and built the Grain de Sail. It seemed to suggest the wine is a secondary product, to fill the hold on the outward journey - primarily it's for transporting cacao to Europe where they produce their own chocolate. They have future plans for a second one, over twice as long, with 10 times the capacity.

"seaworthy" is an entirely relative term. Almost any boat is worthy to cross the calmest sea. Almost no boats are worthy to face the worst the sea might give. And no boat is seaworthy in the wrong hands. There's a wave out there somewhere right now that will pitchpole any small boat and break most large ships. It's a matrix of risk calculations every time. Designing/building for one type of risk can increase another type. Do you build a super heavy boat that will withstand almost anything but be unable to outrun any threat and will sink likea stone if breached - or go the other way? Do you rely on insurer-driven checklists of features and equipment (that in no way mitigate against a fundamentally bad design), or do you set your own risk parameters, consider eventualities and plan intelligently for your specific usage? I favour the later.

Another exceptional video, Patrick. Would that I were sailing with you, not just vicariously through the computer screen. Still, your videos are always entertaining, instructive, and inspirational.

Love your channel, the sailor is sea worthy and the yacht rips along, yes she's maybe more a racer than an ocean crosser but she handles everything you do that I've seen really well.

ˈsēˌwərT͟Hē -adjective- (of a vessel) in a good enough condition to sail on the sea. Patrick your vessel is a perfect example of "seaworthy" as you have proven over and over. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with us. Ignore the haters. Your videos make my day :)
