Again Patrick, thanks for another great video. I'll construct mine to mount primarily over my Right Side Rear Tire. The rungs will be close spaced to accommodate my Bad Back and Knees. The bottom 3 rungs will fold up and lock in place for driving. I'll design it to clamp onto your new Roof-Rack so it can be placed wherever needed. Thanks again for posting your great construction methods.......

@@PatrickRemington I saw yours and then just went into my garage and started it, nobody has made a video for a rav4 so I had to figure out a bunch of little issues but it works great now. I just painted it and threw it on for the final time, the gas can is still coming in the mail and I'm just gonna do my own thing for mounting it, ill probably just weld some brackets onto a rung and go from there.

You should invest in a conduit bender. It would be much better than cutting out wedges. And the bends would match up perfectly.

You should explore the world of unistrut! I opted for it instead of conduit on my DIY roof rack. The customization is endless. Also, do you have a good recommendation for a beginner welding setup?
@PatrickRemington
@PatrickRemington 3 жыл бұрын
I would get a 110 flux core/mig welder. You don't need shield gas with flux core wire so it's cheaper and good to start with. Whenever you want to start MIG welding you can just buy a bottle of 75/25 shield gas. Flux core welding spatters and Sparks more it doesn't look quite as clean. Mig spatters less and looks cleaner. I would try to find something used first. Nothing too old tho. Welders have gotten so much better and cheaper in the last few years. Lincoln electric, Hobart, Vulcan (harbor freight) are all good choices for anyone. Watch some review videos here on KZfaq. If you would rather buy new I'd look at a machine from YesWelder Which is the brand I was using. I've been very surprised by the quality for the price. Hope this helps! Let em know if you have any other questions!

Love the fantastic video! But why not paint over the galvanize coating?? All vehicle base metal is galvanized and it add additional protection from rust...
@PatrickRemington
@PatrickRemington 2 жыл бұрын
I read that it needs to be primed with a latex primer for it to work. If you prime with oil-based primer it will adhere initially but will quickly fail. You need to remove the coating to weld it anyway and my spray paint is oil-based so it's just easier to go ahead and remove it. With a good paint job, I'm not worried about rust.

Nothing bad in what you did by cutting and welding the electrical conduit, you might have been able to find cheap or rented or even bought a tubing bender for electrical conduit. home Depot sell them for about $30. If you have other projects where you will be using the conduit, it might be something to look into for those projects.

Why did you cut and weld instead of simply bend the conduit? It is engineered to be bent, that's why is called malleable versus the harder style called rigid. Save a lot of timed and energy.

If you are using the wire conduits to build the ladder, you can just use the handheld bending tool, all Electrician do that way, why cut and weld them ?

The first reason is that I don't have that tool and wanted to avoid buying another took that I wouldn't really need again. Also, that tool comes with a learning curve and I didn't want to waste any conduit try to learn out to get the bends just right.
