: Buddy Hackett tried and tried, even to the point of purposefully annoying and trying to steamroll to get Lynde's laughs, but the poor little guy couldn't catch on. Word was that Hackett started getting into hot water with Marshall and the producers over it, even the audience sometimes.

This is why game shows of 70s were awesome. The subtle lewdness of the questions and the stars themselves made them a riot to watch even years after they aired. Nothing like what we see today

I loved Paul Lynde! Anytime he was on Bewitched, it made the show thst much better. Remember watching him on Hollywood Squares with my grandmother and laughing our heads off at him He was a classic! Never be another like him!

Buddy Hackett, was a great comic, and he tried to steal Paul's thunder on the Juliet Child question. Paul Lynde, gets irritated, but then, has a far better answer than Buddy. LOL.

@@Jzeaser a lot of people say that, but I think it’s a misunderstanding. The responses weren’t “scripted”, at least not in the way we would usually think of scripting. According to the show’s producers, celebrities had the option of arriving early for the tapings. If they did, they could have a look at the questions they might be asked, so they could have a gag answer ready.

Yes he had lines written for him but he also ad lib many of his lines too. Ad lib takes natural humor talent. It is not something you train to be. You have to be born a natural humorous person and comedian too. Paul Lynde was a born natural humorous person. That is the natural charisma gift he had.

One of my most-favorite come-backs of his was when Peter Marshall asked, "In what State was Abraham Lincoln born?" Paul Lynde: "In what state?" Peter: "Yes." Paul: "Like all of us -- naked and screaming!" Everybody burst out laughing so hard and so long!! 😅😅😅 (Actually, I think one of the main things I liked about it so much was that he wasn't putting anybody's feelings down with this -- 'most EVERYBODY was included! 😄😊)

At the end of the last clip, the horn that was used on that episode rather than the "tacky buzzer" was later used on the 80s version of the show. Paul Lynde was always so hilarious!

Even if the lines were scripted--obviously some were and some weren't--it's his delivery that makes them so wonderfully funny. On the Johnny Carson show, Paul Lynde said "timing is everything," and he's got a great sense of it. So quit insulting each other and enjoy the laughs!

I saw this video today for the first time. I've watched videos of Groucho Marx, Don Rickles, and other great comedians and NONE of them ever made me laugh so hard as Paul Lynde. His one liners on this game show are simply unbeatable. There's funny and then there's hysterical and Paul Lynde is absolutely hysterical. He is, as far as I'm concerned, the all time true king of comedy.
