Sometimes I think Paul listens to this song at home and just chuckles about how much better of a songwriter he is than everyone else that he can do the goofiest song about a milkshake in the hardest way possible and show off his talent all over it

For McCartney's skills as a rock-shouter, I recommend the Beatles tracks "Long tall Sally", "I'm down", "Helter skelter", "Oh! Darling", "I've got a Feeling" as the most intense. There are numerous others like "She's a woman", "Got to get you into my life", "Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band" or "Hey Jude" etc.

@MarkChappell1
@MarkChappell1 Жыл бұрын
This was a song Paul wrote based on his home life with his kids. It's all tongue and cheek, with obscure and whimsical references. Monk was a word he used with his kids to refer to Milk, so the Monkberry Moon Delight was a sort of fantastical sort of milk based drink or potion. It's a crazy song but so wild and hard and catchy. Note, there is an old joke about the tomato family walking down the street and the kid tomato keeps lagging behind to the point where the daddy tomato walks back to him and stomps him flat and says "Ketchup" (catch up). So the lyrics "catch up! (Ketchup), Soup and puree, don't get left behind" I think come from that.

One of the main reasons why you never heard of this album is because Jann Wenner, the founder of Rollings Stone Magazine, was a fan of John Lennon. He started a campaign that favored Lennon and discriminated against McCartney. The mainstream media followed in lockstep and throughout the 70's and 80's McCartney's work was ignored or ridiculed...

You know what’s crazy about this guy is that he’s this eras Mozart. It’s hard to imagine that there is anyone else in the 20th and 21st century who could pull over 100 hits. I liked the work of Paul McCartney when he sang in the Wings group, in 1971 after the breakup of the Beatles, the Wings group was created by Paul where his wife Linda McCartney sang and played keyboards, the group enjoyed stable success in the 1970s. 12 Wings singles were in the British Top 10 (one of them, "Mull of Kintyre", stayed at the 1st place for 9 weeks), 14 singles - in the American Top 10 (of which 6 went to the 1st place). Eight albums of the group were included in the top ten of the charts in the US and Britain, and in the US five albums in a row climbed to the top. Of course, Paul Macartney's further career was a great success, many hits were written, but I personally remember his work in Wings.

I bought this album when it came out in ‘71 and loved it at the time but it got some bad reviews especially from qRolling Stone magazine who were firmly in the Lennon camp post Beatles breakup. Paul had a tough time after the breakup and Linda pulled him out of his funk. This is the second album they recorded together and it is a gem. For me right up there with All Things Must Pass as the best Beatles solo album. Paul was energized and clearly not afraid to experiment and try new things with songs like this. Thanks fellas. One of my favorite solo McCartney songs, showing his incredible range as a songwriter and musician. There are a lot of great solo albums from people who left successful bands. As much as I fretted when Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, his solo career way more than made up for what else he might have done with Genesis, and he could never top his work on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway as a member of a band. I highly recommend the title track from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway to pique your interest in that dense album, but I have to have some Black Coffee first. :)

Wow, La and Che, you have some great subscribers, and some great taste--MMD is an overlooked treasure that few know and appreciate. And, bonus: it's slang for weed. The name is based on his kid's word for milk. So on the surface, he's talking about his kids drinking milkshakes, but really talking about him and Linda smoking weed--yes, that's her on background vocals. "So I stood with a knot in my stomach, and gazed at the terrible sight Of two youngsters concealed in a barrel, suckin' Monkberry Moon Delight" At the end: Hey honey, try some of this! ::suck:: ::choked, holding-in-toke voice:: What is it? Monkberry Moon Delight! Your "dark carnival" observation is on point. McCartney's voice is indeed fantastic--he can go from sweet and pure, to harsh and hard. For more hardness, try Helter Skelter and Oh Darling. What I love the most about this is that--across all the years and changes--you get this music. What a delight, and a credit to you. So cool.
