I got hooked for life on these Fabulous Four in 1966 watching “Help”, at 13, on the « Grands boulevards » in Paris, and I quickly developped to more particularly a “Paul” Beatles fan, but like you, I find his anecdote here uncouth _(I got hooked for life on Jimi too - and “Eric” -, ‘course)._ He does have a minor mean fiber based on something like, _“Why doesn’t everyone realize that I’m the one leading that exceptional group”?,_ that he spent too much time rehashing, in thought or in words. We were millions realizing it, did he realize it and wasn’t that enough? ;> On the other hand, I got the 3-part film “Get back” only recently, watched Part 1 so far, and it’s striking to see how they can be both geniuses and normal people having normal human hangups. Such as this one and George’s (unjustified) inferiority complex. _(However, Ringo comes out as calm and collected, and especially a much more cultivated guy than I imagined!)._

It often seems to go unnoted, but Jimi Hendrix brought the "guitar god" mantle back to America when he took it away from all those great English guitarists. It's almost unbelievable the British Invasion happened at all in the U.S. where foreigners essentially dominated the American pop music scene.

A great tie-in here is that Jeff Beck covered the Beatles song "She's a Woman" on the album Blow By Blow. I only somewhat recently started listening to Jeff Beck's albums and I have no idea what took me so long. I won't put him at Jimi level (who is?) but I do hold him higher than Clapton, despite Clapton having more commercial success and mainstream recognition. Bring up Jeff Beck's name and half of the time people think you're talking about the other musician known as Beck.

It is blindingly obvious that Hendrix was just needling Clapton. Hendrix had played for years in ultra-tight, in-tune R'n'B bands and featured in backing bands for the Isley brothers and Little Richard among many others. Hendrix was extremely 'musical' and could of course tune his own guitar. He was just being cheeky. Very cheeky...

@@pcasto oh because he wasn't the fastest or the most technicaly complicated one? Hendrix reinvented the guitar. He mastered it to perfection, invented his own style, his own genre, and kicked the fuck outta guitarist from that time. He was truly ahead of his time. He accomplished more in 6 years than any other guitarist did in their lifetimes. Just like Jack Bruce said- ''Eric was a master guitar player, but Jimi was some kind of force of nature.'' Greatness isn't about playing fast and clean. He's called the greatest because of his legacy and influence. His willingness to go beyond the barriers and experiment with something new. He could never be boring, because he always had something new to put on the table. Literaly every guitarist after him is either influenced or impacted by his work at some point or another. His genius shows in All Along The Watchtower. He took a song anyone hardly even knew and made it into one of the greatest songs of Rock history. Also Hendrix with his guitar could produce sounds no one else can. Like when he did the Star spangled banner. You can hear machine guns, tanks, fighter jets, artillery, ambulance sirens and even riots in the streets. It also included a segue into taps, the traditional bugle call played at military funerals. Speaking about it, Hendrix performing the Star Spangled Banner is one of the greatest moments in music history. Literaly no guitarist ever has or ever will reach Hendrix's level of impact and legacy.

Because that wouldn't have been anywhere near as funny. Jimi's timing was, needless to say, impeccable. It also would have been rude, as he'd just played a freshly released Beatles song and ripped everybody's musical expectations to shreds with his playing. Jimi was a very polite man. Also pretty damn funny with a great sense of humor. Cheeky is cool and playful, rude is not. Also, you don't play an album for a whole two days if you don't dig the music.

If you want the truth, listen to what Chris Squire has to say about Jimmy. Paul is not even Paul, and that's the truth.

Sorry Paul, but the only way I can stand The Beatles after Brian Epstein took you over is if you're being played by Jimi Hendrix. You remember your time at the Star Club in Hamburg (before Brian) - that's where you were best. Unique, wild, revolutionary - and Jimi ]continued that movement until he died. But he lives on through his music until eternity.

Hendrix was waaaaybetter than Clapton and McCartney . They we're trying to emulate the music that Hendrix came from and grew up in. Shit Clapton almost quit the guitar after hearing Hendrix knowing he was the real deal

Yeah... amazing... but Sgt Pepper was released on 26th May 1967 and Jimi was playing in Germany on the 28th. He played the Saville Theatre and opened with Sgt Pepper on the 4th of June 1967. The album had been played on Radio London on 12th of May and on the BBC on the 20th May...

Room for thought. Most left-handed people almost have to be ambidextrous or at least way better with their non-dominant hand than a right-handed person would be. Could that be why Jimi was so good?
