Hey Paul, hows it going. As you know, I'm a fellow KZfaq creator, and this is real similar to how I teach it. I do prefer to use scrap OSB, or even laminate flooring as it splits less often, but otherwise it's very similar to the video I did. I even mark the top like you did, that way you don't have to cut a perfectly square scrap of rock, it could be any old shape since you trace it and cut that out so it fits perfect every time. Good job man. Stay warm.

Nice video explanation of this procedure. I have used this method many times as a handyman. I prefer to use pieces of plywood instead of furring lumber because it won't split when the screws drive in. Lately I have been using the California patch technique for small holes.

I have a problem crack that has come back. I used a blade to bevel, then actually cut all the way through both boards (this is a butt joint) in order to remove all the crumbled plaster. Both wallboards have been screwed into wood and there is no movement now or loose material. The crack opening is now at least a 1/2” wide as well as it being the entire depth of the drywall (1/2”). Am I ready for repair with just Zinsser 123 Primer and then powdered mix joint compound with Fibatape since there is wood behind the gap all the way from top to bottom? This is overall a foot tall. The area I’m repairing is where the house was previously flipped and the wall from dining room to kitchen was cut away leaving just a foot across the ceiling and a couple feet on one side, the other side is the full length of the living room.

Paul, I watch your videos and Guy's (below) nonstop. I want repairs done right (w/wood) and not half way, so down came my towel racks (gently) and I was left with those tiny circular metal things that refused to be removed. I relied on youtube instructions how to remove, but nothing worked so I used my jewelry tools. Bought some sheet rock, a kobalt knife, sheetrock screws and 3/4" thick wood that was cut 3" x 6". Knife wouldn't go thru 60 year old sheetrock, so got a large serrated kit knife. After a difficult hour of learning a few new bad words, I removed my 4 x 4" sq. Half way thru I remembered, DUH!, there was a pocket door behind where I was cutting. Stop laughing. It was not damaged. Now, pls advise, it measures exactly 1 1/2" from the pocket door to what used to be the wall. The wood and new sheetrock measure 1 1/4" pressed together. Would you suggest I go forward? Or would it be better to somehow patch this now 4 x 4 foot hole? 2nd question - I want to try another solution for the other metal circle things. I've tried hammering them in which doesn't work. Should I use my jewelry tool again, pull them out leaving holes, and just patch with hot mud? I want to install new towel racks. Thank you so much.

why do all that for such a small whole, why not just mud it and sand it, you might have to mud it a couple times cause it shrinks. i think thats less steps and in easier way. thanks for sharing i learned many things as well.

I was wondering this as well. One advantage seems to be that you can put a screw back in that spot after it's refinished...but I've got a wall with like 15 large drywall anchor holes and I can't imagine having the patience do this fot every single one... But I'm guessing the finish would look better and blend in nicer with this method. I have always had trouble with the mud kind of bubbling out of the hole while still wet and then cracking as it dries. Any comments Steve ? Thanks!
