@@PaultheBackpacker even though I live on the south coast in the the uk a hammock is just to faffy and cold during spring and autumn plus we don’t have the big old Forrest’s like the USA it’s just a weather thang. If you like a bit of wild camping as I do then a tent can hide here in longer grass nearer the coast and let’s be honest no trees for hanging a hammock here in the south of England the view off the cliffs though does have its benifits

On longer trail runs I throw in one of those little tiny water bottles and the bidet just in case :) My normal water bottles that fit into my running pack don't fit the bidet, but the empty little bottle adds practically no weight.

As one of Paul's beta testers, I took it on an 8 day trip to Yosemite in August. It was so nice not having to carry TP in or out. And having a squeeky clean hiney was the best part. Another tip that I could add: natural materials (rocks, sticks, etc.) work great for wiping before you use the bidet.

Absolutely brilliant video - it is terrific that someone has been brave enough to get into the nuts and bolts of how to use a portable bidet. It is transformational for when hiking not having to use TP, and the joy of being shiny and clean after every poop stop. I don't know why people may find using a bidet weird compared to carrying a ziploc full of soiled TP in your backpack next to your kit. Many thanks Paul for sharing some invaluable tips, much appreciated.

I've been using a Culo bidet at home for several months now. Life-changing! And your earlier videos helped my technique and confidence a lot. While I'm leery of extra purchases, it does sound like you've made some great improvements. I look fwd to your release video! As a person with hemorrhoids, I find that actively wiping with one hand while spraying with the other really helps get the plant-based remains out of those now-external nooks and crannies. I feel so fresh, and the water is so much gentler on what would be internal tissues. More splash onto the cheeks by doing that, but at home it's easy to use my cloth strips (tp replacement because it's also so much comfier & earth friendly) to dab it up. And yes, they're virtually always visibly clean! Just wet. It's easy to take a few cloths with clean/dirty baggies on the trail too.

I appreciate the efforts to show the process as best as you can. I’ve been using a portable bidet for years now. I’m at the start I would do it just like you described (both at home and in a trip) but noticed that after a few days hiking with no shower. The area would start stinking just like feces despite being “clean”. So, I had to add washing with soap before the end. That solved the problem and I’m sure it is clean with no stank even after days of camping. Yes, that forces you to use more water but you are sure you are thoroughly clean too!

Thank you for the video! I'll be trying out a bidet for the first time and found your instructions helpful. 👍🏻 One side note for anyone using TP on backpacking trips, please Leave No Trace and pack out your used TP. Put it in doggy poop bags or a ziploc bag and pack it out. It may seem gross at first, but it's really not and it's not nearly as gross as finding other hikers uses TP strewn about the backcountry. And yeah, even if you bury it, animals will dig it up. So it's best to pack it out and LNT. Thanks 🙏🏻

I Love the mansplaining detail. I do this at home with my bidet. Just makes so much sense. I tested with Tucks. Oh, and if you have Hemorrhoids that form cracks you do need to do a bit of digging with a finger, but you are washing at the same time (at home I use soap).

Picture a 1'x2' piece of nylon tarp that l sewed pillow stuffing in covered by nylon tarp material and all four corners have grommets to hook small bungee cords to secure to the tree. Thank you for sharing and making it lighthearted with some jokes :) I also don't use toilet paper, but have a slightly different technique. 1) Regarding the pants being in the way - Normally I hike with shorts, so I would usually remove my pants and underwear off of one of my legs and feet, and put it to the side, this way I have plenty of space in front for peeing without the pants getting in the way. After finishing with pooping and cleaning, I just stick the free leg/foot again through the underwear and shorts, and ready to go again. 2) No Bidet technique - Apart from not bringing toilet paper, I also don't use a bidet (one less thing to remember to put in the pack). My technique is something like this - I make sure I have found some (2-3) big leafs and store them in the side pocket of the backpack, just in case the location where urgently having to poop doesn't have any leafs around. So at the location, I put the leafs, water bottle with sports cap and soap next to me. Then the obvious - pooping (in a deep squat), then I use the leafs for cleaning/the heavy lifting, then I pour some water with my clean (right) hand into my left (soon to be "dirty") hand, and I clean up with water using my left hand, repeat 1-2 times more for desired freshness :) Then I rinse my dirty hand with some more water, and I pour some soap add some water, then wash my hands, repeat. I also prefer soap over hand sanitizer - In my experience sometimes only using hand sanitizer can still leave a poopy smell on the finger (too much detail, sorry), while using the soap in stead takes care of that and leaves the hands cleaner. And that's it. This technique typically uses 300-500ml of water for me, mostly for the hand washing with the soap :)

i am a new vegan backpacker and i am so thankful i found your channel! you convinced me that cold soaking while perhaps not going to be my only means of meals (i do love hot tea, especially in the wilderness) it is still a great option to try. and hiking bidets are a fantastic idea about going lower waste and packing less! my only question: should you be using filtered water for your cleaning? i feel like this would make sense, i just need to rethink my system since i was just going to sip directly from my sawyer squeeze on top of my smart water bottle.
@PaultheBackpacker
@PaultheBackpacker 3 жыл бұрын
Think of it this way....and this IS NOT a sarcastic answer...if you needed filtered water to squirt on your butt, then we also would not be able to go swimming in lakes, rivers, ponds without getting sick. I researched the whole water filter debate years ago and looked at the stats. The reality is that most people get sick from their own poop and other people's poop in camp and not water borne nasties. If it is a concern, you can just pick-up one of those little tiny water bottles they sell (like the poland spring that fits in your fist) and use that. Hike with it empty, squirt some water in when you need it. Would weight practically nothing and give you piece of mind.

I don't have a separate bottle for the bidet. After so many people have asked that question, I did go out and wrap tissue paper around the bottle and use it to see if I could spot any Splash back, and there wasn't. Also we have to consider the angles. The water is shooting at a downward angle which means it will bounce off at a downward angle. Picture the letter V, on its side. It would be really difficult for the water to bounce back upwards towards the bottle. And the reality is there's really not much splash, it just really drips straight down :-)

Bwahaha! Someone brave enough to tackle Bidet usage on trail; despite that, there are still haters (Dislikes). They must be hardcore TP'ers! Maybe not your proudest video but I'm sure it's very appreciated by hikers that were curious about trying bidets. BTW ... the internet is forever!

Most americans can not even come close to squating. Usually at public bathrooms, before pooping, I get a paper towel completely soaked and then after pooping I can use different folds to wipe my rear....works pretty good.

Great in-depth informative vid! If it's worth making a vid about, it's worth making it detailed ^^ Your info saves other people of having to go through the experimental phase themselves and will result in way better results from the first try on! Well done! ^^

Haha thanks for this informative and fun video! This will help others so much! You can actually use a soap to have a cleaner and fresher feeling 🤣 I personally think that you should always wash your butt after pooping. In our country that's the normal thing to do..so we're actually surprised to know that other people use tissues to wipe their poop 😳 squatting is also a usual way to do it since most houses in the provinces here don't have toilets. Just a hole on the ground and that's it!

Great Job of making a video about this! I've been considering a Bidet for a long time and this is not something that exactly gets Water Cooler Talk. Good use of helpful information and humor. I think the only thing you didn't mention is that this is a much more affordable way to begin a Bidet-ing experience if money is a concern...No Kidding Huh?

Another great video on what shouldn’t be an awkward topic. I began to ‘convert’ to a bidet after one of your earlier videos, and what a nice difference! Sparing details, has made a few situations so much better. Not worrying about running out of TP, and not developing monkey butt make any journey better. I took along a little TP initially as insurance, but that is changing too. I’m on your email list! Thanks!
