We take a tour round my English front garden in late Spring - Mid May - showing the spectacular dwarf Rhododendron, a magnificent clematis montana growing through a viburnum, a show-round of the azaleas in flower and my new hydrangea container.
My English Garden is near the coast in North West England, Zone 9a with sandy soil.

Hello, dear Paul! As always, I am fascinated by looking at the beauty of your garden, this time at your front garden and discovering how things change from month to month. Admiring the beauty of nature in every season is a real privilege. And making it happen thanks to your own skill and the love with which you take care of this, must give you even greater satisfaction, my friend. There is a lot of work to achieve such results, but also a lot of love. And it shows! A big hug and cheers from Milan! Renata

Hello Paul, your garden looks fabulous! And the rain is much needed (here, where I live). But you are right, someone has to tell May that April is over now. Today we had 3 hailstorms interrupted by sunshine and rainbows. Foolish weather for May. My two Viburnum Tinus Eve Price died due to the late frost we had. Maybe your Clematis Montana needs a bigger space outside the pot. Thanks for this Front Garden May Tour, best wishes, Hanni.

The colours in your front garden are just stunning! Your video is like a breath of fresh air, as we are suffering more cold temps & rain here in Leicestershire ... overnight temps of 3 or 4 degrees forecast at the weekend 😔... no tender plants can go out yet. Seriously thinking of switching to many more hardy shrubs next year!
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
These unseasonal cold nights have been a shock. Not too bad here but away from the West coast it must be even trickier. Hardier shrubs are a good idea - pity so many nice ones are less hardy. I used to say I would only put in plants that can easily survive my Winter - I've been slipping recently, relying on mild Winters and getting more half-hardy plants. It is disappointing to come a cropper with unusual late frosts. I've got 7, 8 & 9C overnights this next week so I'm 'going for it'.
@willowgrove631

Paul T's World yes, definitely 'go for it'! I think you are over the worst of the temps now 👍 Here in the East Midlands, it feels as though we are in 'the land that time forgot' 😂 .... it's a shame, as I've grown so much from seed this year (to keep myself occupied in lockdown etc) & most of it has gone into the compost bin 😕. Hiya Paul, get you having bull finches in your garden I'm so jealous! Beautiful birds. Does your tree heather alberts gold have a scent? I've noticed a lot of different varieties have a lovely almond-vanilla fragrance when in flower. Loved the Gene Kelly impression mate was expecting you to burst into song 😂😂😂 I had a magpie today doing a heron impression at my pond snatching tadpoles...I thought I'd seen it all. Chased it away anyway want some frogs. Great vid as always Paul let's hope we have a nice summer 👍

Hey Stephen, those finches are regulars now - i always stop and watch them. I’ll check the tree heather for scent. After watching the jay, my magpies now also hang upside down on the fat ball feeder. I once chased a female blackbird across the lawn after she snatched a newt from the pond. She dropped it and I popped it back!

@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any David Austin roses but I would recommend the two climbers I have if you like scent. The only problem with them is that, being large blousy flowers, they do drop their petals quite quickly. I'd prefer it if the blooms held longer on the stems.

Beautiful garden Paul. I to love the rain and the blackbird singing was a lovely touch. Many thanks for sharing your garden with us. Could you recommend any good fertilisers to improve soil. Mine is very dry. Thank you
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
So pleased you enjoyed my blackbird singing away Jean. My favourite for my dry soil is the leaf mould I make as it hold onto moisture. But because it is impossible to make enough of it I only use it in the planting hole. Horse manure would also be good at both holding moisture and providing, and holding, nutrients. Dry soil lets everything through and lets rain run off rather than soak down - so anything which stops rain running off. A thick mulch of chippings or bark (preferably over manure or leaf mould) would slowly enter the soil, rot down and improve it no end. I should do all that with my soil as well.

Paul, will you show us how to prune azaleas when it’s time? I can’t find the mulch you suggested here in the states,mine are just not as full as yours. I also think a few of mine are not getting enough sun. I thought they liked shade but the one I have in the sun is doing best. Your gardens are beautiful. I wish I knew more about my plants. I’m always grateful for your help. Thanks
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Marti. Generally I don't prune the azaleas but I can understand that you want to thicken yours up. Once they've finished flowering I'd suggest trimming one or two of the leggiest stems back to just a few inches from the ground to try and encourage some growth from the base. Then prune 30% of the next longest stems by about a third to a half. I find that my English sun is fine for azaleas - most are more in the sun than the shade in my garden. Do it straight after flowering to give them plenty of time to grow this Summer. You'll see next year how they reacted - which will give you confidence to continue till they are how you want them to be. If there's no ericaceous compost then look for pine needle compost/your own compost, if you have some, is also slightly acidic and ideal. Sequested iron is good and any acidic, rhododendron fertiliser. And of course not faucet water but rain water. Your knowledge will quickly increase - mine is every day. Good luck and enjoy your gardening.

Hi Paul. What a glorious garden. It’s so colorful and beautiful and calls out for you to sit and take it all in 😊 may I ask what Japanese Maple you have? Hi Vicki - yes get a lithodora - the blue is heavenly! So pleased you enjoyed the walk round the garden. The red maple is Acer palmatum Atropurpureum 'Crimson Queen'. I recommend it. Just to let you know - the pond is being visited by two ducks who are making a mess of the vegetation and water colour - they don't take 'shoo' as a strong enough incentive to not come back!

The blackbird could have picked a more sheltered spot to sing in in the rain than under a birch branch, birch is one of the worst trees to try and shelter under from the rain because of the open canopy! Osteospermum's lilac colour will go well with the blue of the lithodora. I might consider getting Osteospermums myself to pair with my ox eye daisies. The clematis Montana looks great. The azalea at 16:17 is like a flowering wall weird but amazing looking! You have a tree Heather wow the flower clusters remind me of a white syringa actually do the bees like it, if I had a big enough garden I would definitely have a tree Heather.

That azalea was right under a really big mature oak tree - only light was coming in horizontally. It’s amazing how they adapted. I’ll pay more attention to the tree heather but I haven’t seen any bees on it.

@@paultsworld It may be that the tree heather flowers don't fully open meaning they last longer , a lot of cultivated heathers have that modification, or maybe they are double flowers to make them stand out more? Anyway its great to get something that looks like a conifer that flowers, and also quite a few moth caterpillars eat heather foliage including the emperor moth although that is very rare in gardens.
