"I have natural tendency to hate God and my Neighbor" In my mind this becomes "I hate God and my Neighbour; I do not seek the LORD." This the line that made me look into the Heidelberg Catechism!

What does G-d require of us? "The answer is found in Micah 6:8 - to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah was a prophet, Hillel was not. I would add, this is what Jesus embodied.

A little trivia for you, when my children were little we had a hot 'stove' with no guard and we never once told them to be careful around it, they instincively knew.

26:08 reminds me of a story about a certain non-Jew who came before Shammai, He said to him: "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the entire Torah while I stand on one foot." Shammai pushed him away with the builder's measuring stick in his hand. He came before Hillel - who converted him. He said to him: "What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow" - this is the entire Torah, and the rest is its interpretation - go study."

32:34 The part about resentment is one I've had to struggle with my entire life. Probably abandonment issues.

In going through the Greatest Commandment Paul somehow seemed to miss the most important lesson: that to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself is greater than all burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:33)

5:40. Take a look at DeepL for very good contextual translation. German is a hard one, and i cut my teeth with Nietzsche, who is even harder to translate. It is a great tool for a deeper understanding - we must remember that a translator must often choose one of many words to translate a concept. Think Chesed to Agape, or Faith in Hebrew and Greek. Faith, hope, and love/Charity. We invented the word Loving-Kindness to get across the meaning, very Nietzschean ;) Philology...

No ;-) Jews invented Gemilut Chesed. The Germans invented little but borrowed much. Word study isn't translation. In word study you have to take a word or phrase as a mantra ... repeat and embody it until it becomes a part of you. You don't have to decide one out of which of a dozen similes are possible, which depends on context. Not what do you mean by "loving kindness" or even "gemilut chesed" but ... are you "Gemilut Chesed". Pre-context. Embody indeed! Shalom - Alohm ;-)) If Germans embodied "Gemilut Chesed" ... no world wars.

"Oh, no! Not me." Spend time with the Sermon on the Mount. Real time with it. Understand it is meant not only for the really super-duper Christians, but for each one of us. Not for some day, but for us to live today. It is impossible to say "not me" if one considers this Sermon seriously.

This is a good observation. I see my personal failings much easier when contemplating the Sermon on the Mount (love your enemy) than in the 10 Commandments. Paul would include the Sermon on the Mount in his 'mediated law', but for most people 'law' means the 10 Commandments.

"Look up on the Internet what Howard Hughes was like in his final years" Or if you saw the Simpson's two-part episode, "Who s*ot Mr. Burns", Mr. Burns is acting very much like Howard Hughes did -- his going on about the "Spruce Moose" aircraft (Hughes had made an all-wooden aircraft dubbed the "Spruce Goose") is the most obvious tell.

We have a natural tendency to glorify ourselves over God and others? But pop psychology says I must love myself before I love others. So it's only logical that I love myself before I love God and others. Checkmate, Paul.
