If you are visiting Rome the Capuchin Crypt is a place that blew my mind even after I'd done the full Vatican tour. Peter Hitchins is definitely a character and that quote from Swift resonates with me as I'd been discussing with my wife today how it wouldn't be worth us trying to talk to our atheist brother in law about any of the ideas from Justin Brierley's recent podcast critiquing Dennet and Harris' view of determinism. Most atheists wouldn't have the first clue what a deterministic materialist philosophy means. They've just adopted their position from somewhere and not examined the arguments of the apologetics or atheist thinkers.

I'm in a strange spot when it comes to God. I wasn't looking for Him, I wasn't seeking Him but He kept jumping out saying "here I am". After maybe a dozen peek-a-boo's I gave up on denial. So the whole intellectual-God thing is, well, funny to me. The whole 'I act like God exists' , while perhaps useful for head centred folks, is funny. I want to say more but I'll leave it there.

Hello Mr Vanderkley, I don't think it as simple as you give into your immediate desires, asperartions and ego I think one could also be overwhelmed and give into certain emotions but stall or avoid other emotions and things Talking from my own personal experience, I avoid most things that could be considered Good for a person, and I stall and avoid certain things to avoid any sort of pain or consequences for those choices i make that could happen in the distant future. The thing is these choices are more complex than just give in or just avoiding it a combination, and I think other people who are also atheistic or agnostic do the same in their own way hell even theists may do the same to an extent.

"Christianity is utterly ridiculous, but it's an utter ridiculousness that I want to remain dominant in my corner of the world because it makes my life easy!" Dawkins annoys me because he's like a freeloader on welfare that despises those with jobs but sees how trends are going and is now worried that too many are getting on the dole with him while too few will be working to keep the welfare system going. So now, he's speaking about about how we need more workers keeping the system going while also sneering at them and calling them stupid fools for having jobs and not living it easy like he does.

Watching through the whole thing, I just keep thinking the same thing. Our beliefs aren’t that obvious to ourselves, and the tacit framework which we see the world through isn’t entirely subject to our assent to propositions. That being said, the best way to begin to believe something is to decide to believe it beyond when you feel like you do. Belief isn’t an emotion, it’s a state of being. Living as though you believe is a great step towards full belief. How you you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. And, as a Christian I think the Holy Spirit plays a pivotal role in the process of belief. As the type of Christian I am, I even think the Holy Spirit shoulders much of the burden. Just take the leap and choose belief.

@@markweswhit869 I too first encountered the Greek, Roman and Norse myths as a boy in encyclopedias my parents had provided for us. They were like fairy stories, and never came any where near being considered by us as on a level with the Bible. What is lamentable is the tendency of some in TLC to exalt myths/fables and fairy stories, and to take a low view of the authority of Holy Scripture.

Maybe I have an odd view of God, but I don't understand why so many people say you can't prove God's existence. I got this proof from E. Michael Jones who, I believe, was paraphrasing St. Thomas Aquinas, but it's as simple as: 1. Something can't come from nothing 2. There is something. QED. There has always been something, and whatever there has always been is God. This doesn't prove the specific qualities of God as outlined in the bible, but surely it's good enough for a general understanding of an eternal creative force in reality.
@smoothinvestigator
@smoothinvestigator 19 күн бұрын
It's consistent I suppose, but most people won't be satisfied with it because it defines god very broadly: God is just existence, but not personal and doesn't guarantee salvation or justice etc. It doesn't really accomplish anything and is unsatisfying.

@@smoothinvestigator And I'm not sure what you mean by personal, but if you mean something like "conscious entity", I would attempt to prove that by first suggesting that reality is foundationally consciousness as an alternative to the idea that reality is foundationally material (not provable through logic alone, but I could provide a series of examples that would suggest this is the case), and then argue that since consciousness is foundational, it would only make sense that God could be seen as a conscious entity.
