The community has agreed without much debate to disallow the use of pausing to abuse OoB detection and extend the Lakitu effect for Time Trials competition. For RTA Grand Prix mode speedruns like All Cups and 100%, it is allowed. The 4"24 Frappe Snowland SC flap does not involve pausing and is therefore allowed for Time Trials. Beck Abney already has a 4"25. There could be some side leaderboard for IL times with pausing, but it won't be on the official Mario Kart 64 Time Trials leaderboards. Also, about flashing lights: most of the flashes from heavy use of pausing occur during these periods: - 7:15 to 7:50 - 12:35 to 12:42 - 13:35 to 13:45 - 14:07 to 14:25 - 15:30 to 16:30 - 17:08 to 17:20 If you have photosensitivity of some kind, be mindful of these sections.

there is another N64 racing game called Beetle Adventure Racing, and in that community we have also had occurrences of a 0:00.00 time glitch, but for the whole race, not just the lap. however it only displays briefly, and then in the game records it actually seems to **add** ~5 seconds to whatever the time would have been, essentially penalizing you. we still dont know what causes it to this day. the game has a dynamic framerate, not fixed (on console the highest you ever really see is 50 fps or so, depending on whats rendered).

The solution to the issue of rulings (as with most new potentially-contentious glitch discoveries) should just be "Make a new speedrun category."
2 жыл бұрын
That's sort-of true. The question in basically which category people want to pay attention to. And for that question, it seems to be important whether you add new restrictions to the old category and make a new category without these restrictions. Or whether you make a new category with the restrictions, and leave the old one unrestricted. Objectively both approaches are equivalent. But humans seem to care about the difference.

@@Sylocat It makes a lot of sense insofar as human nature and casual observers are concerned. Most people heavily interested in speedrunning a specific game will likely know many (if not all) of the different categories and their idiosyncrasies, and probably switch from time to time to keep things interesting; OoT is a great example. Unfair as it may seem, the average person isn't going to care and just wants to see the game get completed as fast as possible in a way that they see as "playing the game" i.e. something equivalent to any% no major glitches. This is why you still see some comments on e.g. zfg1's runs that utilize ACE or SRM saying things like "cheater" or "hacked game". A lot of people just aren't that knowledgeable, nor should they really be expected to be; they just want to see a game - likely one from their childhood - get completed extremely fast whilst conforming to some arbitrary ruleset they themselves have decided. In other words, there currently is - and almost certainly always will be - a large gulf between runners and the majority of people who consume said runs. It's less a matter of someone "deciding" which is the "main" category; that's just how it naturally tends to arise for obvious reasons. Same goes for how the average person only knows the top runners and would struggle to name a single glitch hunter for most games even though the WR runs wouldn't be possible without them. It's not fair, but it makes sense nonetheless. The average Joe couldn't care less who XxSupahK00pahSt0mpah93xX is, regardless of how integral their contributions are to the game's WR via their 200+ 20-second clips from their small KZfaq channel. Thankfully glitch hunters tend to be a modest and humble bunch :) Also, sometimes things really are just very contentious to the point that slapping a new category doesn't suffice - simply "sweeping it under a new rug" if you will. I am reminded of the elastic band stuff regarding OoT's WR.
@Sylocat
@Sylocat 4 ай бұрын

This adds MK64 to the list of games where pausing is game breaking or controversial. In Minecraft, pausing can be used to lower your in game timer, which led to Brentilda's IGT being over 90 seconds faster than his RTA. In Red Balls 2 and 3, a glitch where you jump and then pause the game a couple frames after said jump can cause you to effectively triple your jump height, creating massive skips throughout both speedruns.

I think that if pausing to enable glitches is allowed, (I'm of the mind that this is against the spirit of it) RTA times should be used for runs that use pausing to remove the advantage of the clock being paused.
@Sylocat

Agreed. I would also have separate categories for pause-less vs. pause-using runs.

Had someone tell me to come visit this channel and that's all they said. Chose this video because I played Mario Kart non stop in the late 90's. I gotta say, this content is on a whole other level. This is God tier.

I’ve never loved repeated pausing strats, whether for pause buffering, lining up precision, or something like this. I just think it’s mostly against the spirit of how games should be played. On the other hand for TAS oh hell yeah go to town
@UNHchabo
@UNHchabo 2 жыл бұрын
Fun fact from Super Metroid: repeated frame-perfect pausing will keep you alive at 0hp, and In Game Time will not count up while you do so. By taking advantage of this it would be possible to create a No Major Glitches TAS with an incredibly low value for In Game Time. The only caveat is that you can't pause on elevators, during Power Bomb explosions, or during Mother Brain's rainbow beam.

Would the indefinite OOB driving eventually lead to a crash due to your position becoming too high? Or does this game handle large floats differently than SM64?
@Sylocat
@Sylocat 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely. Though you'd probably need to drive for days if not weeks to get your position anywhere near that high.

This glitch is pretty interesting, with lots of potential, although, I imagine execution of it would be extraordinarily dfficult. Still, before this, I didn't know about the All Trees Categories! Now I'm interested! I wonder if there will ever be an "All Trees Speedrun History" video. Also, anyone know of any All Trees TAS Videos? Anyway, great analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
