March 2022 update: My Grandfather Vincent (The Barber) is still alive, and very much well. He just turned 80 in September 2021. I wish I can add photos onto the comment here to show you guys. Believe it or not he still cuts hair for some of my family members in his home!

That's so funny to read this. I normally don't read the comments but I watched this video for the first time, today and seriously, I wondered who the barber was. I did a web search but didn't find any credits for the video. You need to update Wiki. Pavement was a great band, 90's music was a great antidote to help us get over horrible 80's music, Matador Records has consistently signed good acts and their anniversary issues should be a part of any Indie music collection. "TWO" thumbs up for the barber!

God does this song transport me to 1994 when I was 19 and anything & anyone felt possible. It’s one of those songs that I love but rarely can listen to because the nostalgia is so heavy for me. It’s weird because it makes me feel so happy that I can still touch that time in my life; but there’s also an overwhelming sadness that accompanies it because I know that I can never live that life again. There’s a handful of songs from roughly 92 to 96 that I have that relationship with.

Saw them one summer at Pittsburgh's Lollapalooza in the late 90's. I think they were on the smaller, second stage, but I can't remember. It was sunny and hot- like sunburn hot. Relaxed atmosphere. Blankets in the field; people resting everywhere in small, nebulous groups. Nobody minded if you walked right up. This was before cellphones, so people would say, "how's it going, man?" and then offer you a... something or other. Everything picked up speed and energy as the day turned to evening, but that day seemed to take forever. The girls were slender and young. They wore Earth-toned day dresses, but often jeans with medium bells on the bottom. Their jewelry was also Earthy, and it tended to be visually interesting but inexpensive. Their styles were not at all as exaggerated as those 90's clichés will suggest, but it could be tacky and over-the-top at times; nevertheless, to my young male mind, they were as beautiful as they were intriguing. Lots of hacky-sack in the crowds: some of the circles would contain more than 50 people, all calmly playing in the field. Professionals would quickly show their skills, and then pass to give someone else a chance. Oversized hippie hats everywhere, just like the _4 Non Blondes_ girl wore. Nag Champa, Coppertone, and pot smells hung in the air. Big, baggy green corduroy pants, tie-dyed _Grateful Dead_ shirts, and that popular mushroom/sun album cover from _Sublime_ could be seen everywhere. The booths were stocked with hemp jewelry, Devil Sticks, polymer clay caned crafts, nickel bowl pipes, Kokopelli flute player knick-knacks, and sand-filled satin lizards. People were friendly, but strange. Never felt awkward, though. If you're still young, enjoy the weirdness of it all! Just be careful.

In 1992, I was talking to a girl called Kat and she said that in the future they will look back on the 90's like we then did the 60's. I wondered how anyone could know that ahead of time? But well, here we are, and the general consensus from those of the generation who then were only being born, or weren't, for a few years after, is that somehow, some of that same type of magic was transferred, at least in as far as the record of music from that time period is concerned, (but that was a pretty obvious comparison at the time, really!) I don't think the 90's were all that comparable to the 60's, because the 60's even now are recognised as an even more powerfully active time of change in many more areas still impacting on modern life today than ever were there any similar movements in the 90's, apart from the music (of course) and maybe some of the movies eg 'Fight Club' and these are all that exist today to judge the 90's by, since the importance of the 60's has been dissipated by the passing of the ideals of the hippies and the beatniks so there's not as much to compare the two by, but I guarantee you, as a baby born in 1968, there was more palpable social change and excitement in the air, charged as it was with the acid fueled anticipation of major social, political and cultural revolution than ever there was in the MDMA tolerance building 90s which, sadly, saw its end made even more bitter by Cobain's generation X betraying suicide and finally, the plastic cherry on top that was the anarchy quenching fizzer spoiling the 1999 NYE party to end all parties for the year 2000, during which everyone was slightly worried they'd wake up on Jan 1, 2000 to find a broken down world where every computer had crashed thanks to the dreaded Millennium Bug, which itself, like the oft and long promised 'coming revolution' of the 60's, never actually started. (Well, not yet anyway!)

I mean, everyone gets nostalgic for the music with which they came of age, and there's certainly nothing wrong with still enjoying it. Just gotta remember not to let that blind you completely and be able to keep an ear out for further things that sound good to you, and to be able to look at older music or music from your time period with the same kind of critical eye as you might new music. Most importantly, though, just enjoy what you enjoy.

Marc, I saw the same Lollapalooza tour that year too. It was in Austin, TX and Steve was up there singing in the blistering TX heat. Then out of nowhere some COMPLETE MEATHEAD, DOUCHEBAG throws a heavy, wet, rolled up newspaper that hit Steven directly on the top of his forearm while he was trying to play. Steven continued playing right through it, not missing a single chord and said something as non-offensive as possible about it, held his composure and finished their performance. I felt so bad for Steven and hoped he didn't think everyone else from TX was like that. Class act guy that Steven.

Beavis: I hate it when you go to the barber, and it's like, he starts cutting your hair and then he goes: "Soooo, how's school?" Butt-head: Yeah. I usually say: "It sucks. Now shut up and cut my hair before I stick that comb up your butt!" Beavis: You know, Butt-head, um, maybe that's why you get all those sucky hair cuts, y'know? Maybe you should try being a little nicer, yeah. Butt-head: Beavis, I'm gonna shove a comb up your butt! My hair looks cool!

This song is about worrying that in spite of your success where you've ended up these days is not all for the good and that it will change you in ways you can't come back from. Compared to tracks 1-3 and 5 on the album, this track (#4) seems zany and unserious, but if you listen closely the same emotion is there. The singer is reminding himself to remember who he is, not to let them turn him into something he is not. Listen to this song after "Stop Breathin" (track 3) rather than as a pure single and you'll hear it differently.

Damn! I wish I could sneeze kitties! This one's for all us longhaired weirdoes. As I post this it is the 4 year anniversary of the last time I cut my hair. On August 5th, 2018 I completely shaved my head and started over from scratch. Since that day I have just let my hair grow. It's now about halfway down my back and I have no intention of cutting it ever again. "Darlin' don't you go and cut your hair" 🤘
