The year is 2000. My high school gf buys me this album for my 16th birthday from a record store that is long gone. From kissing to driving, I experience just about every “first” in the book over the next few months. We rent movies every weekend. We bus downtown and wander around. We talk on the phone (landline) for 3 hours at a time. We promise each other that we’ll move to L.A. after high school. We promise each other we’ll get married someday. After being inseparable for the better part of a year, I break us up, for no reason in particular, just doing what a 16 year old jock does. I barely think of her for the next 23 years. The year is now 2023. It’s an overcast winter day and I’m working alone. I hear this song and it all comes flooding back in a tidal wave of nostalgia. The price of a sweet life is remembering it and knowing those days are gone forever.

All of this was shot around Irvine, CA around June 11 1994 when the band were in town to play the KROQ Weenie Roast at Irvine Meadows. Most shots were done right in the immediate vicinity of the Marriott hotel where they were staying, with a side trip to the Irvine Marketplace across from UCI. I can place almost every location exactly from memory. This video is a precious time capsule of the utterly anonymous, nondescript town where I grew up.

Pavement are THE 90s band... I don't think any other rock group better epitomizes the era. They're like what Chuck Berry was to the 50s, Ramones were to the late 70s, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love Nirvana and Sonic Youth. But I don't think anyone better soaked up the cool, nothing-to-do-so-let's-chill, blank generation vibe than Pavement.

I just got into Pavement this April by coincidence after reading an article on how most 90s bands (Oasis, Weezer) quickly deteriorated in the new millennium and that the bands who live on as legends (Nirvana, Pavement) split up while in the 90s, and they were the only band in the article I hadn't yet heard of. It's been four months, and now they're one on my top 10 bands ever

Go back to those gold soundz And keep my advent to your self Because it's nothing I don't like Is it a crisis or a boring change? When it's central, so essential, It has a nice ring when you laugh At the low life opinions And they're coming to the chorus now I keep my address to yourself 'Cause we need secrets We need secrets crets crets crets crets crets Back right now Because I never want to make you feel That you're social Never ignorant soul Believe in what you want to do And do you think that is a major flaw When they rise up in the falling rain And if you stay around With your knuckles ground down The trial's over, weapon's found Keep my address to myself because it's secret 'Cause it's secret cret cret cret Cret cret cret cret cret Cret cret cret cret cret Back right now So drunk in the August sun And you're the kind of girl I like Because you're empty and I'm empty And you can never quarantine the past Did you remember in December That I won't eat you when I'm gone And if I go there, I won't stay there Because I'm sitting here too long I've been sitting here too long And I've been wasted Advocating that Word for the last word Last words come up All you've got to waste
