2020 6.7 Ford Powerstrokes with a low power concern and with a check engine/wrench lights on, may have a turbo charger concern such as this. Whudd up Powerstroke fam, glad to see everyone back. This cab chassis I had here was quite a learning experience. I diagnosed and found the problem & also learned about the same turbo charger that I have on my truck. I was eager to see what failed inside, so I too could be on the up n' up about any potential future repairs. Tell me what you all think, make sure to LIKE - COMMENT - SUB - SHARE. See yall next time!!🙌👍

Had same thing on mine, pulled it apart soaked in wd40 over night, lubed it up good. put back on worked great, I checked the fuel I have been using it was cheap fuel, dose not have enough oil in it after the EGR so it dried the turbo up, I only use truck stop fuel, got 30k on it with no problem, my theory is 80k truck needs the best fuel or add the additive to make it lube turbo better. It is all about lube on these new girls, to tight and quiet. thanks Mr.Nobody

You might check the vanes with some feeler gauges to see if they have any clearance. Given the heat they are subject to, they would have to have some while they are cold.
@sweetmatthew662
@sweetmatthew662 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's a combination of the metals expanding and contracting from heat, along with soot buildup down in the vane pin pivot points and/or the vanes themselves in between the two plates. Obviously too much friction built up, stopping any chance of free play.

Most actuators on large trucks (at least used to) actuate full at startup to help knock any carbon out of the vanes. The electric ones would cycle during the key on systems tests on some. iirc.

Thanks for a very interesting discussion and video of trying to figure out the problem with a stuck turbo. I'm driving a Dodge 6.7 Cummins at the moment but I'm looking to buy a Ford F350 with the 7.3 L gas engine. My Dodge is only a 2500 and I haul a truck camper ~3200# and tow a 16' utility trailer with my 2011 Jeep JKU onboard. Awesome vid well I was about to say that all I was watching and then you said you’re taking it apart and that was good it’s nice to figure out what part of the part blows out. Yeah I’m going with the precision is too tight, as in an engineer designed it and they sent it straight to CNC and an actual machinist didn’t get to put his two cents in and say you need to leave a few thousands or it will jam up.

To find out either disassemble or soak in solvent tank. Solvent tank will only reveal buildup. It maybe a design issue where more clearance may need to be increased or pivotal points redesigned. That's my guess.

That is one VERY interesting vid you've done this week! Now I'm actually eager to get my hands on a 2020 and break it down to that level of disassembly for my own amusement. Dumb question. Was it as easy to remove as the turbos are on the 6.0s to remove? And I personally rate the difficulty level to remove a 6.0 turbo equal on either E-Series or F-Series. BTW, speaking of which it looks like you got one sitting on the bench in the background to go along with those ARP head studs you have laying there. To your point about part numbers.....LC3Z is a 2020 F-250 to F-550 prefix and LC4Z is a 2020 F650/F750 prefix. That makes me wonder if a cab and chassis application uses the same turbo as the medium duty trucks?

Lot of coking on there. Kinda like the unison ring in the 6.0. Get coked up enough the vanes get stuck or start sticking. This is one reason why I try and run cleanest fuel I can find, quality oil that has low ash, and stanadyne. Could be a vane is warped and when everything is assembled the clearances are closed enough to lock it up.

It would be amazing to fix/repair that vane assembly instead of putting a new turbo in it, wasting a ton of money. As an owner I’d rather repair than replace if I had the choice. I think personally I’d go ahead and drop that vane assembly in a Tupperware of solvent to clean it up real nice and either see if it was a soot/coking issue or if it was a metal interference issue.

Not a delete but an oil catch can from "M" not a sponsor! It would almost seem from a mechanical aspect that perhaps the tolerances' are a bit to tight and carbon or whatever is built up and causing the binding. You'd have to continue to take it apart to determine that. IMHO.

Given the mileage you said this had I don't think this part actually completely failed. It just looks like carbon build up, soaking it over night in some WD40 and a soft brush would likely make it work again. If it was my turbo I would soak it in some carbon cleaner. Then just remove the vanes & unison ring and spend a few minutes lapping them on some high grit sand paper and then re-polishing. Given these part just move on pins they aren't going to hurt the turbo or performance if the tolerance is off a tiny bit by lapping them. After this you can carbon clean the turbo housing, wheel & turbine. Since I already have it apart I would just pickup a rebuild kit from SPE or KCTurbo just for the peace of mind of having a better thrust bearing. Total cost for repair is going to be under $300 and a few extra hours of work vs $2k+ for a OEM turbo. On a side note I don't know enough about the 20+ Super Duties, but I know the GT37 in the 15-19 Super Duties has replacement parts available from a bunch of 3rd party manufactures. KCTurbo sells replacement VGT Cages (has vanes & unison ring already installed) for around $300.

Being that it is a cab and chassis, possible warped due to either excessive heat, or just a bad heat treat causing it to warp.

Does ford have the programming setup so that it makes it “sweep” the vanes after each ignition cycle? The egr dt466e international’s had issues with the turbos binding up and then they started to make them sweep the vanes to help them from binding. Also used to call it the “bounce test” for the vane shaft to make sure it was moving freely. Great video as always! 👍🏻🔧

Why not soak that part in solvent or penetrating oil to see if it frees up? would be interesting to know for those who's warranty has expired. I understand they are a good chunk of change.

great video.. sorry might had missed it the commentary but it helpful to put the year, and mileage on truck when you do video like this in the comments section. just make it easier to keep up the possible miles that things can happen.. I have seen video with clogged EGR on teh 2020 with 120K miles.. that plus this is sorta concerning to me for sure.. :)

Used to be a Mechanic on F-15 Eagle Jet fighters. Those Turbo Vanes look just like the vanes on a Jet Engine. Fomoco took the idea from Jet Engine technology. After all a Jet Engine is just a giant Turbo. It sucks and blows. Good mod to make that a single vane assembly if only they would provide parts to rebuild the turbo instead of making you change out the whole turbo.

HHMMMM.... Seems to me that it is definitely cooked with all that carbon build up on it. That's definitely not good. It didn't looked warped but then again heat treat could've been bad. That is very wierd indeed. It just might be a fluke or some guy on the assembly line felt like he didn't care and over pressed the steel rivets holding it together. We may never know. But as always Great content and good job. Keep them coming. On Fridays it's the Mandolorian then PowerStroke Tech Talk w/ARod. LOL 👍😁

It's interesting to see you do all that woth the cab on. My local Ford dealer has been saying they have to take the cabs off (since the 6.4) to do any work on the diesels. That kept me from upgrading from my 7.3. Now I got an 18" 6.7. I have seen other diesel shops on KZfaq do many things with the cab on but figured they aren't as fluent with taking the cab off. Is my dealer full of $hit about taking the cab off for major work or is it just mechanic preference? They say they can get it off in 45 minutes or less.
@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod
@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, cab comes off for major repairs. Think tho if it had a boom or a dump & it cldnt be moved then you cannot lift the cab. The cab does NOT come off for a turbo! Or upper pan! Or fuel system! Ive been takin cabs off of all Powerstrokes from 7.3 to current. 6.4 was the 1st to actually have a WSM procedure to do so. If ur questioning their ability.....than bring that girl thru DETROIT like everyone else does & I'll get your truck set str8. Plus with a herniated disc...i aint bendin over ur fenders if i dont have to

That vane setup is odd, literally lol, 13 of them. the spacing of them don't follow the same pattern all the way around and some are angled slightly more. I noticed when you were turning the vanes, they don't all turn at the exact same time, there are a couple that lag behind if you watch the ring. Seems like could be some wear/warpage in the ring grooves possibly. Trying to turn just the ring by hand and having any of those vanes lagging behind/sticking could be what's locking/binding up, since you could get movement with prying the vanes since you have more leverage vs trying to move all that with just the outer ring. Kind of like with say a 6.0 turbo. Ring stuck and won't turn, remove it and typically find that all the vanes move but some stick or drag. Clean them up, reinstall ring and turns freely. Doesn't seem like the plates are too close together on the blades, there is no pattern in the carbon indicating there is any contact, plus the 5 spots they are joined together, they appear to have shoulders on them acting as a spacer. Curious if it had a nice soak if it would magically free up or if it's from heat/tolerance issue. Guess time will tell if this becomes an issue and is a design flaw or just a single manufacturing defect. Don't you just love trying to reverse engineer things that fail lol, so fascinating.

Doesn’t Ford only do complete parts like a complete turbo early on in new model years so they can study failures and find repeat problems? Say you fixed it by replacing the vane actuator only they’d never have seen or known of the issue. It’s been years since I worked at a dealer but I thought they wanted parts back whole and not messed with so there was no potentially added damage by a tech. What’s your experience with that? I do remember a few things the engineer told me to box up and send them for analysis. I also know you can’t always trust the tech before you as we all make mistakes!
