A "viewer request" review video (of sorts) to compare my recently built classic (4th Doctor) TARDIS model build with those officially produced by Character Options, plus I talk a little about how the official toy came into being, seeing as I designed that as well.

All these years later and those mass-produced TARDIS toys you had a hand in creating still give me joy. It is a different kind of project compared to hand-crafting a particular prop, but both are still fine accomplishments. Nice to revisit an old video and give it another view.

@@ValeyardStudios Same, but Ebay is unfortunately the place to ''burn paychecks'' for them. There are always bid wars starting at 50 pounds and sky rocketing. Then there are buy it now listings that are asking for over 100 pounds to nearly 300. Since i live in Canada, barely even get these listings because 90% of the time it's complete sets shipping only in the UK. When there is one for Worldwide, the conversion rates (oh this is lovely) is 350 dollars IF the listing is 200 pounds. It's going to be a long wait to find them if your not in the UK. Very lucky when i was younger, i just happen to get the 1st and 7th doctor sets but not the 4th. As a collector, it'd be awesome to finally get what i wanted for nearly a decade ... but keeping an eye online and some money in hand, it will eventually be here.

Fascinating back story, my father in law was a designer for matchbox (back in the day), and completely it’s about technical capabilities, economics and really trying so hard to make a “toy” everyone will love. I played with horrendous dr who “toys” as a kid and I loved them. Now I’m a big kid I can afford to get fussy about detail, but still love the wildly inaccurate and the fabulously detailed. At lest we have a wide selection to chose from, so everyone can enjoy.

Betwixt a scale model and a 'collectors toy', the comparison is evidently immediate. It's really interesting to hear you were involved with this toy line, which I started to collect some of the Dalek's last Christmas and then have moved over onto the 80's Cybermen, which landed me on your channel in the first instance. So many differences in the Tardis over the years between the Doctor's, that to the casual eye all blends into one - colours, keyholes, doors etc which are only just becoming apparent to me. I heard recently on a podcast that A.Dewar, Character Options director of Product Development, said the current Tardis moulds had cracked and needed replacing.

I feel your pain, I was a broke university student once or twice over the years. Buying stuff, while very nice, is satisfying, but building something yourself is more rewarding, though it does incur maximum effort, buckets of frustration, angst and a few other emotions. Despite all that, the end result is something that you can be proud of and truly call your own.

Well, there is a 3rd Doctor version coming (non-electronic though), but yeah, all the classic TARDISes are very expensive nowadays, like $200+. I was lucky to get a 7th Doctor one new in box for about 50 quid back in 2016 after the 7th Doctor TARDIS sold out. Now people pay double that for just the TARDIS. I wish we had got the individual TARDISes for each Doctor also. But, alas, it did not come to pass, just like the prototype Yeti and Dufflecoat 7.

It's sad really, but some of us can see through the pretence and the false frontage of being the nice guy (or girl)... Not that I'm insinuating anything here, no sir. @@PBProps if ever there was a nail ever to be hit squarely, that would be it. I really do despair when I see so much talent in this fan base, yet the 'gatekeepers' only seem to congeal around mediocrity as a sort of bundle of sticks tied together. They're a jealous lot that are threatened by talent. As for Sutekh thrown, I was thinking of a fake sat down skirt, and a hole where the standy-uppy finger can slot into, and perhaps the throne might need to be raised to accommodate the legs inside it. Will also have to include an obligatory stage hand's hand on the seat 😁

awwwww WOW!!!! just magical! firstly your bespoke 1976 model is mouthwateringly beautiful! and thanks for posting just stumbled across the video from batmanmatch's video review of a model 7th doctor tardis kit. LOVED the little history behind the making of the character options boxes. I was just floored when they started making the classic range and even more when it grew and grew and they had 3 DIFFERENT TARDIS's, who would have thought there ever would have been a mass produced toy range of the classic series! I collected everything (and rebrought alot of the figures second hand for my friends two 7 year olds who love Tom and Jon, hehe isn't that wonderful and they love them too) So I got the 1st and 7th Dr boxes, but stupidly passed for awhile on the 4th dr one NOT cause it wasn't a great toy, more because it was a standard 4th dr figure again, and of course THATS the one that went uber rare very quickly (after they had floor to ceiling piles of them in Forbidden Planet london for ages ..kicks self lol) So I'm obviously excited about the B&M re release , will getting two and repainting back to the 4th Dr ones colour wish me luck hehe

Well, thank you for your very flattering comments about the model and the toys. It's just about typical that you pass up on something, as it'll then inevitably become rare and thus there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth because you didn't snap it up when they were just every-damned-where. Been there myself and am now a full, card carrying member of that club. I even have the T-Shirt as well. My kids love the classic stuff, it has them totally captured and on the edge of their seats. The new series engages them less so, which is why we don't watch... 10 minutes in and no-one is bothered any more. Ho hum. Best of luck with the B&M release, I'm sure you'll have it converted in no time.

The thing that amuses me, is that in the story 'Logopolis', The Doctor's fourth incarnation was concerned that the dimensions of the TARDIS 'plasmic shell' were 'off', and landed next to a real Police box to take it's measurements accurately, so that the fault could be fixed. So, in a way, even if the toy is 'wrong', it is screen accurate. Possibly.

The 'body' section with the hemispheres seems to be identical across all of them, the 70s/80s daleks have the same skirt trim as the 60's daleks just with a little extra piece added on to make them the correct thickness, the supreme dalek from Planet of the Daleks re-uses the 'shoulder' section from the 70s dalek mould (giving it an incorrect circle shape on the front) as well as taking the skirt section from the 60s Invasion daleks (which is actually a really clever little piece that can be retro-fitted to any 60s daleks, as long as they have their wheels removed) I haven't got a Remembrance Imperial dalek in my collection, sadly, but from what I can see of them on Google it does look like the shoulder section and dome have been redesigned to be accurate to the original props.

The way that I've always viewed these toys is that ultimately, they look pretty accurate for what they are - toys. I can forgive the odd wobble here and there, just so long as it's not too glaring... I mean it could be a lot worse and you have to look no further than Dapol's output. I do appreciate their (CO) reuse of parts in a mix and match sense to help push the look and at the end of the day, collectively, their stuff looks great when out on display. Thanks for commenting!

Great video, really interesting to see the 3 toys and your bespoke model lined up together! And although I hate the flat roof on the 4th Doctor one, I love the white-on-black signage, and the particular blue colour. So apart from the roof, it does have a certain charm! Thanks lots for the background detail on the practicalities and foibles of mass toy production, fascinating and enlightening! Nice video, sir. Love the points about scale ratios. Having a few mathematical and logistical issues myself building a Police Box. Owing to being linguistically lucky and, therefore, numerically lazy and somewhat thick I have decided not to create a maquette before embarking upon Operation Upset Missus (Garden Folly).... Consequently I am using as a guide a cheap charity shop buy (4" base by 8" to lantern) to try and build a nearly faithful Mk II Mackenzie Trench-ish. I put 'ish' as it will probably have to be slightly smaller than the nine-odd feet of a Met or Glasgow box as, apparently, her indoors needs sunlight coming through the windows. Thus I am going with one inch to a foot, working in twelfths of an inch as an inch, and rectifying the overlarge panels/windows and raising the roof. 'Sounds mad as a fish in a tree but I think it may work... End product may just look like Regal Films' Cushing box, which I can live with. (Oh horror, protect the canon!) If you can possibly be arsed, any top pointers? Your's sincerely, William.

What you're probably doing there, as I say in the video, is you're using a non hatted Doctor. Also, the first, second, fifth, sixth and seventh Doctor are slightly shorter than the fourth, so they will fit much better - however, even though they may fit, the box is still proportionally too small by half a scale point. It's not a huge issue, but when I look at it, I can see it. Best of luck to you on your own builds. It's always fun (and engaging) to make something yourself. Glad you liked the video, by the way.

I wonder if you can answer this question for me: Why the variations in the TV TARDIS? As a viewer who has dipped in and out of the series from the original screening of the first Hartnell episode, and who enjoyed introducing his sons to the Chris Ecclestone reboot (perfect timing BBC!) This is the thing that bugs me most. I can understand and even forgive the flight of self indulgent fantasy that have led to the the reinterpretations of the interior, but I just don’t get why the exterior isn’t fixed and defined by the real article of the 60’s. As a young viewer I knew the Hartnell TARDIS had certain features, and I am old enough to be able to remember seeing the originals on London’s streets. I’ve never understood the rationale of the Box changing its colour and details. In my head there can only be one definitive look, dark “Quink Ink” blue with white window frames, dark blue sign with white lettering over the doors and panels on the other three sides, a white enamel sign on the front left “door” (the telephone panel door opens, the left “door” doesn’t), and the St Johns badge on the left hand door. Looking back through all the info and images of both the real Police Box and the Tardis in its various incarnations, I’ve put the varying looks of the BBC versions down to poor continuity, shoestring budgets, lack of interest on the part of the design/ builders, or “Artistic Interpretation”, but in my head there can only be one “accurate look”, and I stick stubbornly to this despite having looked at the videos detailing the history and various minor discrepancies of the real police Box. The series finally seemed to get it all right with the Matt Smith version, only to get things wrong again in the subsequent series, which really annoys this Old Man...
@PBProps
@PBProps 3 жыл бұрын
I can answer it as I did write a blow by blow account of the changes of the props over the years. Bottom line for the changes is this - it's artistic license. When one prop got too damaged to repair, they'd build another and try to adapt it to get around the problems with the previous prop. Sometimes they'd try to hark back to a Police Box within the constraints of a TV show with a small budget. Thing is, to me, the TARDIS is an alien machine's interpretation of what it thinks a Police Box should look like. In my head, the on screen differences can be put down to the fact that the Chamelion circuit that drives the outer shell is damaged, so over the years of use, the faux Police Box dimensions tend to slip - giving the varying looks. One final point, even the real Police Boxes weren't identical to one another, even within London there were some heavy differences... so it's not too bad I guess that the TARDIS wasn't perfect, because what's it going to be perfect to?

At some stage soon there'll be a 3rd Doctor set (just a repaint and no electronics) and this will be with Pertwee in that red jacket that he often had, you know - the famous outfit that most people think of when considering the 3rd Doctor.

Ah yes, I knew about the previously released boxes, it's a bit upsetting that we still don't have a box for each Doctor. Even if the would be inaccurate it would be nice to have them. I hope this Third Doctor release is a sign of things to come. There are so many variations of Doctors that still haven't been made. The recent Thirteen Doctors Box Set was a huge let down for me, some awesome figures but overall just lazy.
@PBProps
@PBProps 6 жыл бұрын
Well, I can't (and don't) speak for the company, but I do get the impression that the bubble burst on the action figure line many years ago, so this is why you end up with so many variants that are simple repaints. I don't care for this sort of thing, so I don't buy them... thus I didn't get the thirteen Doctors set or even attempt to look for it. It would be amazing if CO perked up the Classic line with new sculpts of characters that we haven't had before, but I genuinely don't think there's a market for it to sustain the production costs.
@doubleEspressoShartini
@doubleEspressoShartini 6 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree. New figures would be amazing. I never understood why figures like Grandma Connolly & Hawthorne existed while we are still missing so many figures from the classic series. Even poor Capaldi has been shunted in the action figure line. The issue isn't even about repaints anymore as there are still so many figures they can do with this repaint method but for some reason we don't have them. For years fans have wanted a Trial of a Time Lord Sixth Doctor and it is no where to be found. The repaints in the Thirteen Doctors set are either really good or the transcend the realm of logic and decide to be so stupid that you would think they were knock offs. The Fifth, Seventh, Ninth & Twelfth Doctors especially felt like HUGE steps back. While you had figures like the Second, Third, Fourth & Sixth which were awesome figures but the set just felt disappointing especially put aside the Eleven Doctors set

Great comparison and very informative! I have only one query - when you're talking about the 4th Doctor boxes (and the "good condition" custom you made for that client), to whom do you refer to when you say "Brahosky"? "Brahoski" is actually how you pronounce "Brachacki" - it's just that most people in fandom pronounce it in a way that an English speaker would say it. No they don't, the props from back then were blanked out on the inside, so this is what we recreated. The new series props have a photograph in the back of the props, so this is why that was included on the new series toys.

Having done the measurements myself, the Character Options boxes - all of them, including the New Series ones - aren’t 1:13. Nor is it even 1:13.5. They’re all 1:14, a whole scale point down.
@PBProps
@PBProps 4 жыл бұрын
If you've measured the classic TARDIS toys, then I think you have your calculations off by a little. The door / wall heights of the toys are 14.55cm tall, that is 13.6 scale (that I rounded to 13.5). At full scale, they are 198cm (I measured the props myself). 14.55cm x 13.6 = 198cm, while 14.55cm x 14 = 203.7cm and they're not that size. The New Series ones are off too, but by a different amount. EDIT: Ah, I just realised. Did you assume that the classic TARDIS doors and walls were 203cm tall (6'8")? This seems logical and would explain your 14 scale conclusion.

I just bought what you just described as a first doctor Tardis at a yard sale. I was curious what goes in the slot in the rear top. If you press the bottom of the slot the blue light on top comes on, But my batteries are apparently too weak to open the door. The model number is DR181. So what goes in the slot?

I've been told this before, though they're not really spare, I just don't have anywhere to display what I have, so everything remains boxed up and in storage until I can rectify the issue.

There is no way I could afford those Tardises. They are very expensive now. Its a shame that's toys they don't all have insert cards of the interiors. It only makes sense not having them if they are prop replicas as only the new props have the interior backdrops for reference.
@brianartillery
@brianartillery 2 жыл бұрын
The very early TARDIS interior was different from today - the external doors led into a kind of lobby, where the internal doors were. This changed fairly quickly, but the internal doors were larger, with hexagonal edges that meshed shut. If you looked in through the external doors, all you would see would be a black void. An interesting idea, that the police box you saw, was just basically, a 'porch' for the TARDIS - and, of course, illustrating the only part of the TARDIS that existed in three dimensional space.

@@brianartillery sometimes. Sometimes the bank vault doors on the inside were the actual inner manifestation of the thin wooden doors on the outside. It depend on which iteration of the console you look at. The lobbyless version is much more alien, non Euclidean , interesting.

I think you're being a bit overly apologetic by reiterating the bespoke model vs toy angle, at the end of the day it's simply illustrating the point you've been asked about! Like you concluded near the end- if you want quality you pay for it!

I wouldn't say that I was being overly apologetic, the point I was trying to reinforce was that I just don't think it's fair to compare the two. But I do agree entirely with you on the latter point.

The base looks too thick. A collection of mass produced bits. Locks are wrong. Love police boxes. Your personal one is your love
@PBProps
@PBProps 4 жыл бұрын
Basically, all the TARDISes are just a modified season 18 prop, retrofitted to evoke the earlier props - which is why the lock and handles aren't right for those early versions. The base was enlarged to accommodate the internal spring mechanism. This sort of thing happens a lot with mass produced stuff. Not much we can do about it, but it's better than no TARDISes at all. Thanks for watching!
