964 Cups were delivered in customer-selected colors. White didn't become a standard until midway through the 996 generation of cups.

The explanation is not as ingenious as some might think,it’s because of all the extra silver paint they had in the parts bin from painting Macans,Panameras and Cayennes. 😅 Thanks for the video! 👍

Silver is the color of German cars like red was Italy, green for UK, etc. I think it may have been a Formula 1 thing.

White is also a historical color of German racing cars. White and silver both are the official racing colors. But white is more older and the original.

@@jannadrielcervo7753 - perhaps, but silver is what they were running in 1955 in Le Mans when they quit racing after the accident. That’s old enough for most people (and evidently for Mercedes itself).

@@CARPB147 Yeah I know. But if you look at much older grand prix cars of the 1910's, and 1920's, you can see some of the Mercedes-Benz are painted white. I'm talking about the pre-Formula One grand prix event, specifically the European Grand Prix Championship, which was shamefully renamed after the war as the Nazi Grand Prix, because of the 1938 and 1939 season are largely Nazi propaganda controlled race.

For the first time the new race car is being delivered in GT Silver Metallic. A color which on the one hand emphasises the sportiness and on the other hand has historical significance in motorsport.

Has the rear quarter panel and sills a sort of removable protection from the frequent impact "side by side" during race? Or have you to repair the metal body after every race?

The rear quarter and sill are part of the tub, same as in previous gen Cup cars. To replace them will require bodyshop work.

@@meschio From Mike Levitas: "You can section the quarter panel to save time on the 991. It's structural, so we weld and bond the entire quarter. On the 992, the quarter panel does not seem to carry any load, so sectioning seems appropriate and should not compromise performance."

Silver interior is a lot better than white, white get dirty as hell after a few years, on silver you won't notice. I'm glad they are finally silver inside and it's also nice on the outside :)

Are the center locks the same PITA style as street cars?

Race car center locks are designed for impact gun so they are much more convenient than street car center locks. The race car center locks look beat up after some usage as a result, which is normal. If I had the choice I'd take convenience over aesthetics on the street cars. :)

I believe white & silver are Germany’s international racing colors.

Germany’s racing color is white. Mercedes went to silver because they had to sand the white paint to lose weight because the white paint was heavy because of the lead pigment. So the car went silver the color of the bare metal
