Hengist's Wild Camps

Hengist's Wild Camps

Күн бұрын

After my last camp up on Kinder Scout in the Alpkit Polestar, where it nearly collapsed, I decide to venture back up Kinder again, except this time, I armed myself with the Alpkit Tarpstar 1 (my best tent for wind conditions).
I was joined once again by Kev Green and his dog Jannu. We made our way up the Nab, then Golden Clough, then towards Grindsbrook and 4 Jacks Cabin, were we pitched our tents and settled in for the night.
I tried the Tarpstar in its 'tarp' configuration, for the first time on this trip, i.e. I didn't use the inner and instead took my Alpkit Hunka bivvy. It was absolutely huge using it like this! I really enjoyed this trip and I can't wait to camp at that spot again.👍

Great camp Steve. Really missing my wild camps. Sat here I can hardly move after 2 days of hardcore DIY. With a few more to go yet, but having a day off today. I think i need to have a bath full of voltarol gel to ease my aches n pains. It's a cracking shelter that Steve. I like the look of that area, plenty of room to get my Panacea in. I think i might have to make that my next wild camp. I bet the inside of your car was a tad fragrant on the drive back after all those scotch eggs 😂. ATB.

Hengists Wild Camps: powered by Scotch eggs! Another enjoyable camp Steve and great seeing the option of outer only on the Tarpstar. I’m still waiting for Alpkit to get a new supply of Tarpstar groundsheets to come in but can see me using this configuration for the Coast to Coast - if not too buggy. Much condensation in the morning? Cheers - Ben 👍⛺️
@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 4 ай бұрын
Cheers Ben.🙂 That was the first time that I'd tried the Tarpstar in that configuration and I loved it. However, I doubt that I'll be using it like that once it starts to get warmer and the insects come out to play. In-fact not just insect, the very first time that I tried the tent, in my Derwent River video, as the Sun was going down I spotted some 6 inch Slugs slithering around outside. In the morning there were trails in the living room area of the tent, and trails that went halfway up the inner before (I assume) they fell off. I thoroughly checked the tent in the morning, but there were no sign of the Slugs. I'm glad that I had the inner that night though. As for condensation Ben, on this camp there was a tiny bit near the apex at the top of the tent. However, I was back up there last week, and this time it was raining a lot, I was boiling water inside with the tent fully zipped up, and at one point, there were two of us sat inside downing a few beers. In the morning there was condensation on every panel. It was no worse than what you'd get in any other tent, and the good thing about these pyramid tents is that due to the angle of the walls, any condensation tends to run down the wall rather than drip.👍

@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 4 ай бұрын
Thanks Mark. That was the first time that I've used it like that without the inner. At the moment, with the current temperatures, I can get away with it. However, once it starts to get warmer and the insects come out to play, or if I'm camping in an area with a risk of Slug slime trail attacks, then I'll be using the inner once again mate.😊 Even with the inner, the Tarpstar is still pretty big when inside it.👍

So no doubt you did your homework when you got home Steve; so is it Northern Edge or Eastern Edge (as Kev said), we newbies are confused 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣?
@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 4 ай бұрын
I'm still going to call it the northern edge Steve, that's what I've always called it mate.🙂 I've always thought of the Woolpacks as the southern edge, with Ashop Head as the western edge (not the eastern edge, as I wrongly mentioned in the video) Crookstone Knoll as the eastern edge, and Fairbrook Naze/Seal Edge being the northern edge. I think that Kev was basing his comments on where the Sun rises and sets.🙂

Thanks for watching Taff.👍 I bought the bag off Amazon a few years ago (they don't list it anymore) from a Chinese company that I can't pronounce. The bag has a down filling with a comfort rating of -3'C (which surprisingly to me, turned out to be correct). It weighs 700 grams and it compresses nicely into the sleeping bag compartments at the bottom of my rucksacks. Back when I bought it, I think that I paid around £65 quid for it.

Question if you get chance to answer. The tarpstar one looks like you pitch the outer then can add the inner. Is that the same with the tarpstar 2 asking as I think you have both.
@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 3 ай бұрын
Hi mate and thanks for watching.🙂 Yes, as you've mentioned, you pitch the outer first with the Tarpstar, then crawl inside and attach the inner. I only own the Tarpstar 1, but apart from the mesh inner being different on the T2, both tents are identical in size.👍
