Hengist's Wild Camps

Hengist's Wild Camps

10 ай бұрын

On my Facebook page, I put a post up mentioning that I was heading up to Howden Edge. Luckily, Kieron replied and told me that the road leading to Howden was closed. So, as an alternative, I decided to head up to Wheel Stones, Derwent Edge way instead.
I pitched up at Wheel Stones, then checked my messages. I found out that Kieron had gone onto Back Tor. However, Kieron then decided to head back to my location at Wheel Stones, where he joined me for the night.
Also, just around the corner from where I was pitched was Gary, who was on his first wild camp. After Kieron had arrived and had got his tent pitched up, Gary popped round the corner to visit us, and the three of us had a good old chat together.
I spent the rest of the time chatting with Kieron and drinking some Beer. Kieron was great company, and also, a good laugh. I had a most enjoyable evening. Just after 10 pm, I decided to turn in for the night and get some shut eye.
In the morning, we both headed down from Derwent Edge where we parted company. This was another highly enjoyable wild camp.👍

Hi Steve, great camp and I see the McEwans made another appearance. Thanks for taking the time to pitch the tent in your video. It was great seeing how it was done. I do like the look of it. Lovely to see how you involved everybody! “Cuppa tea!” Brilliant. Looking forward to the next one 😃🏕️

Thanks for watching Gav, as for the McEwans and stuff, moderation in all things mate. 🙂 Yes, that's one of the features which surprised me, just how easy it was to pitch, seeing as the instructions supplied were for the T2 (*Edit: Which I instantly stopped reading and threw away, lol). I've no idea if that's how Alpkit recommends it should be pitched, subsequently, I've also got no idea about the recommended pole height. I just stick it up until it won't go any further (as the Bishop said to the Nun🙂), but in a Spock voice, it seems only logical the way that I've been doing it. 👍

Absolutely, but a nice crisp lager or amber ale when you arrive at camp 😀 🍻 What is it you use under the walking pole to protect the floor of the tent? I think it’s one of those collapsible bowls but could be wrong.

If you like real ale Ben, you'll love the stuff mate. Ey by gum, it's good beer.🙂 I watched your last video, the one where you went hiking underwater. I think that you did the right thing with bailing (excuse the pun). As with all your videos, it was a top bit of viewing.👍

Thanks Dave. I hope that we weren't too loud for Gary (the 1st timer chap), who was just around the corner, as with the beer, we were quite loud up until 10 pm🙂. Apart from that, it was good to meet some new people. 👍

What a great place to camp lol. Me and Chillo were just round the corner of the rock last week. I bet the chap on his first wild camp had his fears squashed when he realised he wasn't alone. I know there was another tent round the far side of the rock on our visit but we never saw who it was. Thanks for taking us along Steve.

Thanks for watching Andy. It is a great place and I enjoyed seeing your video t'other day. Although it can get quite busy over there, that location has so many spots to pitch up at, that you can still get that 'remote' feel to it, even when there's someone just around the corner. 👍

Ah you parked opposite cutthroat bridge; I parked there this morning at 6am and walked to the same way initially but turned left overlooking Lady bower dam (to do some drone work and funny shorts)! Went back to work at 1pm lol Great video as usual! By the way spoke to a couple of ladies who watch lot of wild camping videos and mentioned the usual high profile names (which was great), then they asked what my channel was. I told them but warned them that I'm more of a 'how not to wild camp' lol I mentioned your youtube channel as their interest is more Peak District Wild Camping (mine is a mismash of I don't know what). So they said they will pop over on youtube and have a look. I told them they can't go wrong! I was impressed by these ladies because they were part of a group of people who clearly were handicap in one way or another. It is clear from what they said, such wild camp channels allow them to see places they cannot physically see themselves and inspires them to make what little effort them can. Makes making the videos for all us youtubers worth it m8

Thanks mate for watching. It is a lovely little walk up from the Cutthroat bridge and I enjoy watching your drone footage, so it's good to see the area from up high. 👍 Thanks for the shout-out to those ladies. I guess that some KZfaqrs goal is to make money, but that's not what this channel is about. I've said to people in the past, that the best type of comment/feedback which I could get, is that after watching one of my videos, someone decides to go wild camping, i.e. If that bumbling fool can do it, then so can I 🙂. That's all that I personally want from this channel. *Edit: We must do a camp together at some point, if you're up for it? I reckon that we'd get on. 👍

Always a happy atmosphere in your films Steve😊. Another great wildcamp and thanks for bringing us all along👍🏼. Must say I've got tent envy regarding the Alpkit Tarpstar 1, I remember you mentioned that they would be back in stock this October so hopefully I won't have to wait too long till I get one myself 😎. Cheers buddy.👍🏼

Great video Steve, I had the joy of watching this while in my tent on Kinder last night 😊 Tim and I set off from Edale and we were both shocked at the amount of folks on the trails, it was difficult to find the isolation we crave, but found a wonderful spot not too far from the Woolpacks. Those rock formations at Wagon Stones look like they would be great to climb, what do you reckon? Hope you're keeping well mate, hope to meet up again very soon.

One place I’ve not camped at yet, saving it for a winter camp I think, love Back Tor but very popular spot. Was going to go up Margery Stones the other day but restricted land access dates clashed with my days off, though I probably could’ve gone long way around to avoid crossing Derwent Edge.

It's a great little spot Tom and fairly easy to access, which is probably the reason why the place sees a lot of traffic. I think that you should be okay with going there in winter though, as there's only people like us who are daft enough to sleep outside in those conditions. 🙂

Nice one Steve. I'm kind of intrigued by that TarpStar...looks like there's a load of space, with the single inner. Have you had it in any heavy wind? Just curious as to how it'll hold up without any higher guys.

Hi mate and thanks for watching. 👍 The Tarpstar is becoming my favourite tent. I've just got back from a 2 nighter up on Kinder Scout. On Monday night it was probably the strongest winds that I've had the Tarpstar out in. A mate who was with me and had one of those wind meter gizmo's, and he clocked the gusts at around 35mph. I was really impressed in the morning that the tent hadn't fallen down. 🙂 It hasn't got any guidelines from the centre panels, but neither does an MLD Trailstar and they're rock solid in winds. After Monday night, I'm now pretty confident about taking it out in bad conditions. 👍

Hi will you be using the tent in winter
@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 10 ай бұрын
Hi Steve, I do plan on using the Tarpstar in winter. What I'll do is drop the pole so it's pegged slightly lower to the ground. I may even put a double loop of elasticated cord through each of the eyelets where the adjustable guidelines attach to, in-order to get it even closer to the ground. I contacted Alpkit enquiring if they sold a solid fabric winter inner for the tent, they said that they'd pass the suggestion on. So in winter, I can see myself stuffing my sleeping bag inside a bivvy bag for some breeze protection. I've bivvy & tarped plenty of times over the years in winter, so in-comparison, the Tarpstar should be a luxury I reckon. 👍

@@Hengists_Wild_Camps would Lanshan 1 four seasons inner fit it
@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 10 ай бұрын
@@steveoutdoors6522 I did think about that Steve, but haven't tried it. The reason being that the Lanshan 4-S inner (as does the summer mesh inner) has a pointy, sticking out bit at the back, whereas the Tarpstar inner is flat across the back end. I still may give it a go, just to see if it could work. 👍
