Pecorama August 2019

We visited Pecorama in Beer, South-East Devon in August during its Loco Week when visiting locos are in operation in addition to the home fleet. It is the home of Peco, the manufacturer of model railway items. Pecorama includes a 7 1/4 inch gauge steam railway with a track length of about a mile, giving beautiful views across Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast. There is also a model railway exhibition, showing layouts in different gauges in various locations in the home, beautiful gardens, soft play area, mini golf and, of course, a model railway shop. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Fantastic - all those double-headed trains! Love the sounds they make and great to see them so well patronised. I remember being very inspired by the indoor layouts of nearly 50 years ago - when I was last there! Thanks a lot for filming and sharing.

I am pleased that you liked the video, Michael. As is was a special loco week, all the trains were double headed. Also, being school holidays and fine weather, the result was plenty of visitors.

I love it one of my favourite places when I’m down that way ,I go on the trains walk round the displays get some food in the cafe ,very reasonable prices and get some spares for my track always willing to help there .

It's one of the favourite places that my wife & I visit. Always enjoy our time there, especially riding on the Beer Heights Light Railway.

a very long time since i went there, must be 30 to 40 yrs ago and thats scary lol... a lovely relaxing pace. do they still have the ideas layouts like mantlepiece and cupboards etc...thanks for shareing....

If you went there now, you would notice some changes! In the Exhibition, the Gauge 1 layout could be located in a hallway, (there was also a much narrower N gauge layout for a similar location but it was not operating) and the 009 NG layout could be located in an alcove or on a shelf. Still a relaxing place, even in the school holidays!

I just think that PECO should have made more of an effort with their layouts - no attempt has been made to emulate prototypical railways. I'm not even an enthusiast but even I can see that. As a major player in the industry, I think that they could have done better.

I think that you are being a little harsh. Pecorama is a tourist attraction and the exhibition is just giving ideas of the types of model railway layouts that could be built in various locations in the home without too much effort or skill. All of the layouts are automatically controlled, which makes prototypical operation difficult to achieve. Anyway, whilst I was there, the children were excited just to see trains running!

I think that's a fair point Dave. PECO are a big name in the model railway hobby and I think they could do more with their layouts. I'd suggest people go to their local model railway exhibition as they'll see better layout there!

I would agree that you would probably find more detailed layouts with more realistic operation at a model railway exhibition, but I think that the idea at Pecorama is to show the general public what could be done without too much effort or skill.
