You mentioned that your child was in the hospital at one point. When one of my kids was admitted to the same floor on which I worked, I liked it because I trusted everyone, but it was also difficult because everyone came in the room and assumed I knew everything about what was going on. To anyone caring for a patient whose parent is a a nurse, please don’t think we know everything. When your child is in the hospital, all you think about is your child. Everything else goes out the window. We take off the nurse hat and put on the parent hat. Unless the parent tells you they know and don’t need an explanation of what they are doing, assume they need that information.

I wasn’t a child but a new born nurse saved my life. My kidneys were failing the er nurse couldn’t get an iv in me. Then a nurse from the infant I c u came down the hall. She asked if she could help me. God bless that woman she got that iv in one time. She really did save my life that night

Thank you for this video Liz! I am a new grad Peds nurse on med surg, and I just finished my first week off orientation! You are so spot on with all of the information you shared. Definitely involving the parents (who want to be involved) and explaining what you are doing before doing it has helped me so much! Also, finding what the child/parents "most important thing" or fun facts about the patient help me connect better with my patients! Keep the Peds videos coming please! 🙏🙏🙏💞💞💞

Hey Liz! You are the eternal optimist, thank you for being so fun! I am a career switcher. I have been a kindergarten teacher for four years, and so when I am (finally) an RN, I would love to work in a pediatric setting. Do you think my kindergarten background help me if I go in the pediatric direction? You are literally the MOST helpful nurse resource on this platform (and super inspirational). Thank you again.

Hi Nurse Liz! I'm a nursing student going into the first semester of my program in a week and a half and I am super excited. Your videos with study tips have been amazing! I'm a pediatric cancer survivor (ALL)- and the amazing interaction that I had with my nurses on the hem/onc floor is the main reason I'm going into nursing. Part of me really wants to go back and work on a hem/onc peds unit because I know exactly what it feels like to be a patient there, but there's also a part of me that is afraid to go back the same place. Over time, I think I've mostly remembered the good parts of my treatment, but the really terrible nights also have stuck with me. I don't think I'll really know if it is a good fit until I try it. Do you think clinicals will help me figure it out?
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 3 жыл бұрын
Clinical will likely help, but usually there arent too many clinicals in oncology just because of how specialized the population is. If you could get an externship or do your preceptorship there that would probably be really helpful. But either way I think you'll be AMAZING with your experiences in your background. I'm sorry you went through that, I cant even imagine, but what a phenomenal perspective you will have when caring for patients

I LOOOOOOOOVE pediatric nursing! I precepted on a pediatric GI/transplant floor and absolutely loved being able to take care of those kids. It was more of a chronic floor so I got to see some of the same kids over and over. I am a new grad nurse working in obstetrics now, but I might transition back into pediatrics after I get my bearings as a nurse because I miss those kiddos! A few people in my cohort accepted positions in pediatrics straight out of school so I agree that it depends on your region!

Lol.. My own personal rant real quick. Worked at one of two Children's hospitals in my state, worked on hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant. ADORED it. I was a CNA. I graduate, they had 3 positions, and still refused to give me (and another girl who had 5 years on the floor) a job. LOL. So even if you do work in peds you still can get screwed. I worked nights during nursing school for literally nothing and IM SO SALTY OK RANT OVER but I loved the video!! Makes me miss peds already. Hope to go back some day.. Out of state far away from my hospital that treats their employees like garbage lol.

Hey liz! what do you think is the best and most practical way to keep your home free of hospital cooties? changing clothes in the hospital before you leave so they don't get in your car? or just changing and showering when you're home? What are your thoughts?

I would usually leave my shoes in the garage since those were the grossest (i usually wiped them with sani wipes on the really gross days), then I just changed right away when I got home and usually showered before crashing into bed. But thats about it!

I graduate nursing school in a couple days and am extremely interested in peds. Would you say that it is difficult for a new grad to go right from school to a peds unit? All of the hospital in my area seem to require experience on their pediatric units except for a periop fellowship that I saw at a children's hospital.

Depends on where you live! You can definitely get a peds job straight of of school! It can be more challenging in some areas vs others but many people I worked with were able to land the job as their first!

Most medical professionals work multiple jobs can you work as a rn and nurse practitioner at the same time?
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on where you are a nurse. Some places don't allow people to stay on as nurses after they are licensed as NP's because they can technically be held to a higher responsibility level in the event of a lawsuit. But some places are cool with it! There were a few nurses on my floor that worked per diem with their NP jobs. But they all quit their per diem nursing jobs within the year because it just wasn't worth it to them.
