Uhggg. I hate dealing with lifting finishes. You never really know if there's a procedure problem or the surface was contaminated with silicone or something. Crossing my fingers for you, Brad!

Nah, it was just a failure to sand the cured sealer coat. Total procedural incompetence. I've done a bunch of these and they end up perfect.

Ah, good old Garrison, one of the saddest guitar stories. I bought an S20 shortly after the company was making a name for itself. After a lot of study and following the glowing expert reviews I spent more than I had intended with the assurance THIS would be my forever guitar: I already owned a seventies Ibanez "lawsuit" clone, Hummingbird, but I wanted a bit better. When I got, I enjoyed it and began to play more. Unfortunately, as Gibson likely knew when disavowing the warrantees, we were realizing that while wood ages, glass composite not so much! So ended up with a crack between the neck and top: that was when I found out about the sale and rejected warrantees. fortunately, one of the original luthiers, now independent, took pity and fixed it for a good price. Now, I've strung it with nylon but it sits mostly as a conversation piece. I'm saving up for a good stable brand name: either a NA built Martin or Taylor: no more experiments. B4 anyone comments, I do understand the concept and need for hydration, but I always keep my guitars cased properly as well as living in the wettest place in Canada.

The musicians in your area should be very grateful that they have such a clever and conscientious bugger as you Brad. If I might offer an idea for a fixture that I call a body vice that is super useful for holding bodies in many orientations. Take a couple of cheap sash cramps , mount the pipe ends parallel in a length of 4" by 3" about two foot apart. Fix the 4" by 3" to the bench. Attach a prop to the floor on the adjustable end. Make a couple of flexible cauls to accomodate the camber of the guitar belly and back. Mine are cork tile lined 9mm MDF. Proceed to hold bodies in all sorts of orientations.

Thanks mate! I sometime adapt my neck-removal jig to hold all but the most annoying and difficult acoustics to work on (ie: OVATION!)

Evening Brad, it may be a little different but I know from experience with floor finish that I have to rub back between coats to key the finish for next coat as well as improving the surface finish. A particularly impressive peel in a hallway many years ago was the result of me not sanding up close to skirting on a recoat, finish was yrs old and needed a refinish, same product used both times only my lack of attention caused the problem

Yes, "Keying in" is the term I forgot to pinpoint. I've been spraying polyurethane since around 1999. I learned the hard way to CLEAN YOUR GUN thoroughly as a result!

Also. Put some surf fishing rod grip or pipe insulation foam over the pipes to protect the instrument. If the cramp pipes are long enough then guitars can be held flat to work on the top and back by haveing block to take up the narrower upper bout.

Hey man with those masking skills you had me asking "is Brad a qualified painter?" but that garbage bag idea mate.....you got the right idea but a real painter would use anti static plastic, if you do a lot of painting it'd be worth going down to a crash shop and asking for a few metres, or even grab their scraps, it'd be absolutely fine for your purpose. Having said that, overspray isn't a big problem for a guitar paintjob, not like a car respray so I'm sure you've had no issues but if you want to step up your painting game there's a tip for ya.

Nice Lutherie Brad! It looks like a Mfg got sold a bill of goods by (finish) supplier without testing, a fairly common scenario.

Is it a catalyzed coating? Pretty wicked adhesion failure between the sealer and topcoat from the appearance on a video.

Isnt poly a bastard!?! Never seen bracing like that. I (stupidly) put my hand up to strip an LTD.... Scraping it back, l found about 7 coats, metallic red and gold..fmd! Luvd the 5x go fast sound effects Brad.. Benny Hill wd be proud!!

I actually prefer poly, to be honest! This is attributed to the incompetence of the manufacturer. What other finish allows me to spray one afternoon, then cut and polish to a mirror gloss the next morning!?
