This antique foil press was sent to me by a subscriber. It evolved more into a preservation over time. The more I researched and learned about this press, the more excited I became. I have a lot of plans for this and it will push me to learn several new skills so I can utilize it to its full potential. I'm happy to be back making videos and will have several released over the next few months. If you have any questions let me know.
Thank you.

Greetings from South Africa. Wow! This brought back great and horrible memories. I started an apprenticeship in Letterpress printing in 1971. For the latter 6months of 71' I operated a machine like this personalizing 1972 diaries. Great restoration!these machines are still being used to do one off personalizing.

I LIKE how you do your restoration - More practical than for looks. It annoys me when someone restores a tool to where it's too beautiful to actually use! For Dies - you might find a local HOBBY Machinist who could make them for you! Or you could get them made from thinner brass by water-jet or laser cutting, then silver-solder them to a thicker block of brass. I bet a book-binder - particularly one who does custom or restoration binding, would LOVE a machine like this!

Amazing restoration job you did restoring that hot foil press, particularly when you took the heating element apart without damaging the mica insulation and connected a new appliance cord to it. That, in itself, is amazing. It took a lot of hard work and patience. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work as usual.

Just a tip on soldering from an electronics guy: Don't touch the solder to the soldering iron. You're trying to heat up the piece until it's hot enough to melt the solder on it's own, not to just melt the solder. By getting the piece up to the working temperature, the solder actually dissolves into the surface of the piece creating a strong bond; if the piece is too cold, the solder will just sit on the surface. Solder that just sits on the surface of the metal makes for a very weak solder joint, and you'll have issues with cracking etc later down the line. If the solder beads up and doesn't wick down into the strands of wire, the wire is too cold and you need to continue heating.

Been a bit of a wait for your latest video son but it was well worth it. As your dad I know only too well why it took longer to get this “Pegasus Project” out. During the past four months you have been busy being a father to four kids (including beautiful two-month old twin daughters), operating two businesses, and taking college courses. It’s no wonder it’s taken extra time to complete such an intricate piece (by my count there were over 60 parts you were dealing with). Ignore negative comments that aren’t constructive and keep up the good work!

Excellent work. The solder joints will come out cleaner and stronger if you heat the wire (not the solder) from below and allow the solder to melt into it from above.
@lourias
@lourias 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. The phrase of: Where the heat is the solder will flow... Or stated better, the solder has a lower melting point than the materials that need to be soldered. The solder does not like to stick to cold stuff. So, heating the material, and then touching the solder to the area that needs to be joined will ensure a better soldered joint.
@PegasusProjects
@PegasusProjects 4 жыл бұрын
I will keep that in mind. Thanks for the advice!
@AndyHullMcPenguin
@AndyHullMcPenguin 4 жыл бұрын
Not just that, but if you are creating joints that will potentially experience heat, then crimping is way better than soldering. If that 400 degrees creeps down those wires, then the solder joints will eventually fail.

I have an older hot foil stamp machine needs new cord hopefully that's all it needs. Then I go to buy older antique Hot stamps and then they're literally non-existent except for like a handful. I did not particularly like the ones they had SO waiting to find a cool older one to use with my machine. I think they started this back in the 1800s? I'm not sure I have to do more research on the antique and bossing dies.

Nice work. The reason you couldn't find any dies is that they were always made for their specific purpose eg: someone's logo. Hot foil stamping was considered a 'prestige' thing. It cost a lot more to do foil stamping than just plain printing. The dies were made of some softer metal that was etched away with acid to produce the highs and lows (not brass). It was then mounted onto wood to take up the depth required to fit into the machine. The dies were generally created using a photographic process where the image (logo) was exposed onto the soft metal and then etched away to create the die. I'm sure you could find more about the process online. It would be great if you could replicate the process and create your own die in the same way as the originals. Your own logo really lends itself to gold foiling. They weren't created in the way you did it - but it worked to demonstrate the process. It's a nice honest resto of an old tool. Good work.
@windmillacres679

Actually, this particular type of machine came with a metal "box" that you hand set individual letters into. Exactly like hand set type for printing. One of the more common uses for this machine was stamping names onto leather bound books. (Most often Bibles.) These are one-off jobs. While logos could be custom-made, they were too expensive to use in this machine. This machine was used for small quantity jobs. You would end up spending a lot more for the logo than the job was worth. For example, in 1980, you could do 250 business cards for about $30. However, a custom logo would run around $100 to make. If you wanted 2,500 cards, they would run about $120 plus the costs of the die. However, they would be run on a much larger machine that costs tens of thousands of dollars more. Think commercial letter press. This little guy was only a few hundred dollars. Guess how I know this. Way too many hours sitting in front of this machine. This guy was just never actually practical as an income producer. Too labor intensive. It sounds like you spent some time in the printing industry. I grew up in it myself. If you ever get down to Houston, they have a great printing history museum. It used to have an old Chandler Price set up for hot stamping. (Another old hand fed machine I spent too much time standing in front of. Only never hot stamping. We mainly used it for die cutting and perf jobs.)
