Pelagic 77 'Vinson of Antarctica' Maiden voyage: leaving the KM Yachtbuilders yard

There she goes! The Pelagic 77 'Vinson of Antarctica' has left the KM Yachtbuilders yard for the Hamble, UK in mid May 2021. Unfortunately there was not enough wind to make some sailing images but those will follow surely since the yacht will be in the Hamble sea trailing and testing for another month. We will miss her and her crew and wish her fair winds and safe travels! Drone video by Guy Fleury. Love the modern Schooner! Looks like fun work getting her sails to speed. Simple, rugged, and clean. Well done Tony and Skip, she rocks my world in Alaska. Still trying to get a yard to build one in Alaska. WE want the fun of building such a fine sea crafts as this. I think a KM like yard in Anchorage or Homer would be welcome and a great asset for Alaska. Lots of commercial and sports boats are being built for chasing fish. Any interest in setting up shop in Alaska. Lots of shop commercial shop space close to the Port of Alaska. Anchorage is a great location and a key stone to the Arctic. Maybe the Polar Partnership Countries would like to contribute for a polar partnership vessel, to complement our future Polar Partnership Center in Alaska. Lots of talent that needs direction and a common goal with a great design like this Pelagic 77 design.

Thank you! Yes, our yachts are custom built, just like the Pelagic. So we build what a client requires.

This boat looks bulletproof!! Out of interest what is the plate and stringer thickness? How was it insulated?

15-25mm around the keel. 10mm on the waterline. 8mm on the hull. She was insulated with a Polyurethane foam.

Dear Eeuwe, KM yachts would have significantly more sales if they offered - in addition to your semi custom builds- one “production” sailing yacht in the 45’ to 55’ range. The appeal to buying an Amel 50 or Garcia 45 is knowing that these designs and production have been perfected over many years and tens if not hundreds of identical hulls and layouts. Remember Henry Ford’s and his popular Model T, “ Customers can chose whatever color they wish, as long as they chose black”. When spending that kind of money, people want a design and production they know has been perfected. Something to think about.

Dear Mr Noble, Since 5 years we offer the Bestevaer 45-49-53 line which are semi-custom yachts. www.kmy.nl/view-models/bestevaer-pure/. However we find that most people come to us for more custom yachts, or start with a standard yacht but change to a custom yacht because they have their own specific wishes and requirements. So we built more custom yachts than we built 'standard' yachts.
