I, generally, use a ratcheting, interchangeable regular-sized screwdriver for the initial loosening of screws. Here's a link to the brand I use:

Get some additional, varying sizes Flathead and Phillips bits while you're at it.

For a long time I sent my trolling reels in each year to be serviced. I happen to be partial to the Makaira but they're all similar. Once you get through the process once you realize it's something you can do yourself and videos like this make the first attempt much, much more pleasant.

thanks for posting this, do you have a link for that bearing remover ? also how do you get the handle bearings out ? i'm working on a 80visw and theres no gap to get anything in there to drive them out

Where do I purchase the tool for taking off the handle. It was the larger curved thin metal tool with the large two sided cutout in the middle for holding the nut under the cranking arm. Thanks, Harry

Thanks! Yes, the 50 is similar..... the 80 has some differences..... use the proper schematics and take pics along the way, no matter which reel you're working on.

Trying to unscrew that plastic cover on the spool over the drags. Your video it came off by hand but mines is stubborn. You mentioned a tool you have to unscrew it?

Thanks for checking out the video. Yes, but if you've lifted the lock pin, it's unlikely the plastic housing would need it.... they're generally loose. If you don't have the tool, try using a strap wrench or gently tapping a flathead screwdriver in one of the grooves that the tool would go in (there's two slits on it). The cover is removed counter-clockwise.... be careful not to damage the cover with the screwdriver.

@@TSGReelService thanks for the information. I’m servicing a 50 visx and that lift tab is a little different. It doesn’t have that lip for the tab to be retained on when rotated 180 degrees. I’ll wedged it up with a flat head bit but it may not have been enough. I’ll try again. I ordered the tool from mystic parts for $20 shipped. Yikes.

@@Shaungomban No worries. You may be mistaken. The tool won't help you on the drag cover on the 50VISX.... I don't have all the answers for every reel, but in the future, it's best to say what specific reel you're working on if you want the best possible answer.... the drag cover on this reel doesn't have a lock pin. It's held in place with the click plate screws and click plate.... after removing the click plates screws and the click plate, you can remove the drag cover. To separate it from the outer drag plate, simply pull up on the drag cover while pushing down on the outer drag plate, to free the rubber inner seal (it goes back on by squeezing it back down on the outer drag plate until it pops in place. To reinstall the drag cover, you need to put on the click plate and screws back on. If you have already tried what you were referring to in your message above, you may have already damaged the reel, so let's hope that's not the case. Probably best to take it to your local repair shop for help, just in case.... especially since there are some other nuances to this reel that are not covered in this 30VSW video.

I think they come in the packaging when you buy the reel new. You can also try mysticparts to see if they have it..... most Penn wrenches/tools begin with 168- so you can do a search for that.

Any way to recover if instead of opening the clip on the drag cover, you accidentally take the e-clip off? @13:47

Thanks for checking out the video. Yes, use a small needle nose pliers to pull the post up as you open the cover. Then, after you remove it, you can push the post back up from underneath as you put the little silver plate and the e-clip back on. Make sure you put the spring back over the post before reassembling it. Hope that helps.

Thanks for checking out the video. If it was working before you took it apart, sounds like you may have reassembled it incorrectly..... but maybe not. Take a video of you using the reel and what you did to determine the drag wasn't working, put it up on your channel ad post the link to it here so we can see it.

@@TSGReelServiceI have another question on the 16VSX, I would like to swap just handle from the football handle to a T handle. Penn sells a T handle. The two screws that hold the football knob are very hard to turn. I wonder if Penn uses locktight. What do I need to do to remove and replace the football handle?
