This is a review of the 2 speed, lever drag, 50 wide Penn Squall big game reel. It's a great budget reel for tuna, dolphin, marlin, wahoo, and etc. Intro music from www.bensound.com.

*Used this today for first time **enjoyable.fishing** recommend caught four bass with it, it seems to be a solid reel so far. Very smooth and cast like a dream. I think its a good value.*

Happy to see reviews coming out for these. I have one myself, as do others that I shark fish with. Bait click is excellent and they're fairly durable on the beach. Capacity is something largely passed over in discussion though. I have a full 1200 yard spool of JB 100# hollow core on mine, which hits the last line ring before topshot. Got another 250 yards of 80# Momoi mono on top of that. Not trying to rob from your video, just add some helpful information for those doing research. Thanks for the video!
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96886 жыл бұрын
Seth Revell I did mention the capacity. I am running 600 yds of 130 pound JB hollow with a 100 pound Momoi Diamond topshot of about 200 yds. Thanks for watching, appreciate the feedback!

I have a 16 and a 30. Love them for trolling for small to mid size pelagics. Super smooth but not well greased from the factory. I rebuilt both of mine and the drags are smooth again now. Inportant that the drag material is the same but these are single disc drags not dual like in the international. So smaller surface area and way less heat dissipation than the International. Still amazing value for money here....

Thanks very much, your review was really helpful. I'm looking to round out my spread and needed some 50 size reels. I own two 30 vsw Internationals and two 70 VS Internationals but wanted something a little more affordable. I'd been looking at these for a while especially since Shark River Mail Order sells them for $259.00. I think I'm going to go with these. Thanks again.

Bill Davis, you're very welcome! I don't think you will get that deal on an International or TLD. Tight lines!... Kevin

great video! I tried tuna fishing for first time last year and was not happy with the rental gear which was old penn senators. I bought the pen squall and got a great price for it. went out this past sunday into Monday and caught a mahi and it performed great. Maybe one day I'll get a tuna
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96886 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't like these reels as much as the TLD 50s or the Internationals, but it gets the job done for a great price and the retrieve is notably smooth. Lever drag technology has really made star drags for offshore applications obsolete. Tuna can be tough! Offshore fishing in general is! Where are you fishing out of?

Thanks for the review. Looking for a high speed trolling reel for Wahoo. Probably will only use it 6-8 times a year so the price point is perfect.

I really enjoyed this video and also looking to get in to light offshore fishing. I currently have a Penn Warfare 20LW that I use for fluking, and togging in deep water when I need heavy weight to stay on the bottom. I've also used it for striper fishing and it has handled them very well. But I wanted to get more into tuna and dolphin fishing. My buddy does trolling off his boat but is limited on equipment and so I wanted to get my own setup to bring along. I found a combo from Cabelas that pairs a Penn Squall 50VSW with either a 5'6" or 6' Ocean Master Stand Up rod. Do you think this would be a good beginner outfit for me?

I fish with the 30vsw (8) for my trolling spread. No issues at all over the last 3 years.

Not sure if you mentioned it I didn’t hear it but the reason this reel is priced as such is it’s a graphite body compared to an International which is aluminum. Perfect reel for private boats not fishing everyday but if you’re looking for a charter type or tournament reel it’s worth looking into an aluminum frame.

Nice video. I caught a Big Eye this past summer on a Penn Squall 30VSW. Just ordered a couple 50s. What rod do you guys recommend? I don't want china like the Pinnacle Marine. Thanks!

I have a few spinner reels and I do a lot of shoreline fishing, I been debating on getting penn squall #20 size reel to start learning on. What is your take on the #20 ? What is the maximum lb. line capacity on them? If I like the feel of working with a conventional reel I may want to pick up a larger size.

From your introduction it sounds like you are local to me. I'm located in Overlea, MD. What Penn Squall model would you recommend for trolling rockfish in the bay?
@fullspeedjunkyable4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the Penn SQL30LW they are the replacement to the legendary Penn 330gt level wind. BTW I grew up in Highland Hills behind the Hazlewood Inn back in the 70's and 80's now I am in Forest Hill. If you are serious about purchasing new fishing gear go to Tochtermans and tell them Gomez sent ya. Buy local they will beat the big box stores.

ok, I looking for fishing of coast for wahoo 30-70lb and yellowfin tuna 20-60......is this reel good for tuna and to used with braid? (braid 80-100lb/800meters and 50m mono). only I fishing with spinning reel and used left handle, regards from spain
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96887 жыл бұрын
caranx89 Yes, it is a great reel for those fish! I have 600 yards of 130 lb braid and 200 yards of 100 lb mono on top. You want enough mono on top so that only big fish get to the braid. If you get multiple fish hooked up at once, braid is more likely to burn other lines off and it is more difficult to handle. The braid is there to ensure that you have enough line for when you hook into a big fish. Thanks for watching! Let me know if you have anymore questions!

@yessuhyessuh21003 жыл бұрын
Retrieval is pretty bad on the squall and the international is better built id recommend a tld50lrsa over both it has good build quality and the internals of a tiagra with a graphite frame

Is this really just a offshore reel? Is it ideal for a 12' surf rod?
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96885 жыл бұрын
BavarianMotorHead I don’t do any surf fishing really. I currently make living fishing offshore. Only if you are paddling out your baits will it work. A 50 is not possible to cast.

Thanks for the nice review, i am asking is the braid 80 lb better or Nylon Line 80 lb for trolling ?
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96886 жыл бұрын
Ahmed Hashem thanks! Unless you are trying to get down deep, go with mono. If you need more line capacity, use a braid backing that you will only ever see on a big fish. Mono is easier to tie and safer to handle. It will also provide stretch when a big fish piles on to the bait and make it a bit easier for the angler to keep the line tight. My preferred mono is Momoi Diamond. Good question!
@mido67836 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply, i use Berkley mono line 80 Lb for trolling does it fit or i can use 100 Lb?
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96886 жыл бұрын
Ahmed Hashem, I would definitely only use 100 lb mono if you have a braid backing because your line capacity will be severely limited. You will get about 500 yds of line on there with 80 lb mono. I like more, so I use 100-130 lb braid backings with a 200 yd top shot of 100 lb mono on all of my 50 size reels. I get about 800 yds of 100 pound test on my reels that way. With no backing, definitely stay 80 lbs or less.
@mido67836 жыл бұрын
Adrenalize Outdoor Productions so which is better for trolling to use lures direct to mono line or use ball bearing? And what about leader is it useful in trolling
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96886 жыл бұрын
Ahmed Hashem, You definitely want a flourocarbon leader of about 15 ft, sometimes longer. I even wipe my leaders down with alcohol so that they are clean. For tuna, I will use anywhere from an 80-130 pound leader depending on how finicky the fish are and where in the spread the bait is. For white marlin I use 60-80 lb. On lures targeting blue marlin 300 lb is usually good. On marlin lures, I may do a double line section of 10 feet or so too. On other gear, I just crimp a wind on swivel, usually a Spro Power Swivel.

What rod is this squall 50vsw paired with?
@adrenalizeoutdoorproductio96886 жыл бұрын
This rod is a Pinnacle Marine TSX with the Oversize Wind-on guides and a short bent butt. My other Squall is on a Penn International rod with the big AFTCO wind-on guides. Since making this video, I have boated several tuna on that second set-up. The Pinnacle Marine rod is much stiffer and is my rod targeting bigeye in my spread. Looking for recommendations on a rod for a certain application?
@gfunk639016 жыл бұрын
i paired mine with an ugly stik standup rod 5'6", xtra heavy and rated for 50-130 lb test
