The Nittany Lions traveled to West Lafayette to take on a Boilermaker team that was riding a wave of momentum during their '97 season. The Lions were fresh off of a humbling experience losing to Michigan at home the week before. Penn State used a heavy dose of Curtis Enis in this one to power through Purdue, and while they gave up a lot of yards in the passing game on defense, in the second half, Penn State used turnovers to pull away and win big.

Purdue posted a 9-3 record in 1997 with an Alamo Bowl victory against Oklahoma State while finishing 4th in the conference. Penn State's win over Purdue was their 8th on the year, with their only blemish thus far coming at the hands of Michigan.
