This homemade Shoofly pie is a baked molasses pie that is the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch community. This Shoofly pie is rich with sweet molasses with a gooey bottom and cakey top with a crumble. Lots of sweet flavor and texture. This pie is just in time for the Holiday season. We really love this Shoofly pie and hope you give it a try. Enjoy.

True: As a little girl, I had an eating problem. I didn't like food. So , I didn't like to eat. I only enjoyed eating Cheerios, Rice Crispies, Spinach (from watching Popeye) and chicken. One day the church had a trip to Lancaster Pa. We went to eat there. I clearly remember sitting on the long bench next to the long table patie!). ntly waiting for the food to be served. What I first saw served was beautiful green peas.They were big and had this unbelieveable beautiful green color. I was very surprised at this sight. It gave me an appetite. I started to eat the peas at the surprise of my familly members. They asked me how did I like it. I said, the peas taste different,...not like the ones that come in the stores. They taste soo good...fresh! Then, I began to taste everything that the Amish served that day. Needless to say, everything that they served tasted as if it was Blessed by GOD and came from HEAVEN. (TRUE)! Suddenly, my Aunt Geri or was it my Mom...asked me if I wanted to taste the shoofly pie. I remember hearing about this pie and answered, yes. I looked at it, it looked good because of the crumbs on top. When I took some on my fork and ate it...I went crazy. I immediately fell in love with this pie. I asked, what's this made out of? I forgot the answer, but I definitely remember that when we were leaving I asked my Mom if she would buy a pie for me. We wePnt inside the shop and she purchased a few pies to take home for the entire family of eight of us. At home, Mom gave me my very own shoofly pie which I enjoyed over the next few days. Eversince that experience, I would always ask my parents when the church was making a trip to the Amish area in Pennsylvania because I wanted their shoofly pie. The last time I had this pie was in the late 1980s. My Mom went there with the Women's Associate from the church and she bought one back for me. I've informed all of my friends in Berlin, Germany about this pie and they are very inqusitive as to it's taste. Now that I have seen this video, I plan on baking my very own Shoofly pie. Thank you for sharing! An American (Daria-Tanis Jetter Spenke) in Berlin, Germany

Yum. I've never made it but it was a staple dessert when I was a kid. The crumbles were never as flat as most photos online. I've now read that others in Colorado have had a similar volcano effect despite adjusting per altitude chart: When I first moved decades ago, I asked Mom when she visited, to make the pie and we all had a hearty laugh (what a great memory) over the "volcano science project" but it tasted just fine. I hope to make this sooner than later but know it's too much sugar for me these days. I actually ordered a pie last year from PA instead of try. 😆

I have the same blue-glass pie plate! I bought it at a yard sale because I'm a total sucker for old school glass stuff and the blue kind of caught my eye. Turns out it was very useful because I started making turkey pot pies, got hooked and put that plate through its paces for a year! Till I cured myself of the addiction to turkey pot pie.

Hi Tess.. My grand parents, aunts, uncles, mother have been making this pie for decades.. I now also make it, and I'm always trying to improve it each time.. I prefer it to be a little more wet on the bottom, light, and not overly sweet, and I have to say, your recipe is the best I've ever had to date. It came out perfect. Very happy I followed your recipe, and directions. This is the real deal, and those that love this pie, should follow the recipe as shown. Thank you!

I have fond memories of trips to the PA Amish country. Used to be a famous restaurant just off the Pennsylvania turnpike called Zinn's. You could get whole shoo fly pies to go and it had a pie tin deposit where you brought their tin back next trip. Fond memories of it in the 80's! Now I am so glad I found your recipe, I am dying to relive those memories again! Thank you for this recipe and video!

@TessCooks4u

Angie, it is odd and I don't know the chemistry behind it. It just works. Dissolving the baking soda in the hot water just helps to disperse it evenly in the mixture. This is an old recipe and in the old days they had well water. Not sure if that is a clue. Thanks for watching.

Great recipe as usual Tess! I think I'll make this for my family for Thanksgiving. On an unrelated topic, I've heard of Pennsylvania Dutch my whole life thinking it was a Dutch community only to learn in my adulthood that the immigrants referred to are German, not Dutch. Duh! It's not a huge deal, just an observation. During the Middle Ages and into the early modern period the word Dutch in English referred to West Germanic speakers of continental Europe in general. Okay, now I feel better! LOL! Sprechen sie Deutsche anyone?

if the bottom of the pie comes out not very wet and too cakey or dry what would that mean? would that have to do with cooking it too long or is that an ingredient issue?
@Anglynn74
@Anglynn74 7 жыл бұрын
is it the corn syrup that turns it into a "wet bottom" shoo fly? I've seen wet bottom shoo fly pies and then more cakey dry versions. I made one the other day & only a very thin layer at the bottom was wet, everything above was dry and cake-like--used everything in this video except corn syrup. I also found that the crumbs on top sunk into the pie and made it more dry and cake-like. Trying to make the filling wet and gooey without being like a cake.
@brkitdwn

Anglynn74 You can leave out corn syrup, and add a little more molasses. Omitting the egg also can make it a little lighter and wet. You could also bake it 5 min less

⚠️So I got it all ready, it was perfect, then I picked it up to put it in the oven and immediately a fraction of it slid over the side of the pie. Be careful when you pick it up guys; the batter is about as thick as water. Update: tried the pie and my dad loved it. I used Beer Rabbit molasses because it’s what I have. The pie wasn’t very sweet-the molasses was rally strong. I tried a different recipe before that just used Karo syrup...thinking of switching the amounts on the next one.

I made this for Thanksgiving one year. Some liked it and some did not. I rather liked it. Tracy asked me to please never make it again. My cousin John asked for the recipe he liked it so much. So very much a love-it-or-hate-it recipe. Marshmallow pie got the same reception. But I'm thinking I might make it again, only with honey instead of molasses. Is this a dumb idea? Has anybody tried it?

I never made with honey but know it would give it an entirely different taste. Good luck. Thanks

Just made this pie for Thanksgiving, first time. Family didn't want me to make it because the name sounds gross. Look forward to their opinions. Shoofly shoo!

If you are over weight this wont.help. yummy. Cattle and horses love molasses. I'm 7 miles from an Amish town. Amish buggies go past my house.
