Lennon was so wise with these lyrics. It's a timeless message that touches us fundamentally. People in power using these labels to divide us - absolutely. Divide and conquer.

I find that all songs with a message end up being old songs and stand the test of time. They become musical reminders that we can do better.

Live and let live, love and let love. Not all reactors get the message from this video, but it is such an important message. We are all different in some ways, all the same in some ways, but we are all human.

Imagine by Pentatonix may be one of the most important videos of this century. This group took a classic, timeless song of tolerance and peace and modernized it as only they can. They are a perfect example of what respect and love can be like. Five people with differences in race, religion, gender, and sexuality can do beautiful things when they work together. I cried when I saw and heard this the first time. I still usually tear up when they go into Wall of Sound mode.

Watch again and pay attention to the cards for an even deeper insight. Each card they hold up describes the person holding the card. Each card they pass to the next person describes both of them. So each person is unique, and yet each person shares traits with the person standing next to them. As we all do. Each one special, each one alike: human.

Hello Saeed, so glad that you did this one. This is such a beautiful call for peace from John Lennon over 50 years ago, and it is even more relevant today. The cards held up shows a particular characteristic of the person holding the card, and when they pass the card, it shows what they have in common with the person they pass it to, demonstrating that we share so many things in common even if we are different - and then in the end - we are all human. The Pentatonix arrangement, vocals, solos, layering and harmonies are just beautiful and help to carry the message. Thanks for the reaction.

Saeed, spot on. Most of us long for peace, and we live and let live. This song is both hopeful and despairing.

We like to say that Pentatonix doesn't do covers, they do upgrades, and for the most part it's true. But how do you upgrade a song that's already perfect? Well, if you're Pentatonix you look for a way to make that song more itself. In the case of "Imagine" Pentatonix treats the song and the song's writer with the utmost respect, and engages in a dialogue. John Lennon saw that things like religion and nationality divide us, so he suggested that we get rid of those things. But Pentatonix sees that it isn't possible to get rid of religions and nations, so they propose another solution. You see, the real problem is something much deeper than religion, or nationality, or even money. The real problem is the human tendency to reject people who are different. So Pentatonix looks for ways around that problem, and then they show us how a healthy community deals with differences. First Pentatonix looks for and finds the things they share with each other, the ways they're alike. And in the process they also find the things that make them individuals. And because they've already found the things that draw them together they can not only accept their differences but celebrate them. Doing that, looking at differences clearly and with love, gives them greater insight. It makes them a stronger, wiser, more compassionate community, and they all benefit from their diversity. Instead of dividing them diversity draws them together, until they can look at everyone and see the one thing that we all share - we're all human. And this means that when they meet someone who is very different indeed, in ways that otherwise might seem bizarre or dangerous, they can still see that fundamental truth, that we're all human, and we're all in this together. Unlike everyone in Pentatonix, I'm old enough to have heard John sing "Imagine" live. And that means I'm old enough to have the evening news from December 8th, 1980 seared on my memory: John Lennon, dead. Killed by an assassin who ambushed him when he was coming home after an evening out with his wife, Yoko. For those of us who remember that night, the grief and shock remain as strong now as they were 43 years ago. John had only 40 years on this planet. We have no way to know what else he would have given us if he'd been able to live out his full life; all we know is what he DID give us, his perfect anthem, "Imagine." I wish he'd been able to see this video. It would have made him so proud.

When you mentioned "pick me up", my mind immediately popped up the PTX Perfume medley, which has those exact words in the first eight seconds. It is lots of fun, and definitely a pick me up, even though it is half-Japanese (Perfume is a J-Pop band) and very short. Kirstin looks amazing, Mitch is totally bald, Kevin's visor from "Daft Punk" comes back, and Avi's samurai hairstyle and red eyeshadow is a look. You might add it to your list.

It is a punch to the gut and I saw it all through your reaction, especially at the end. I have been blessed to have lived on this earth now for quite some time. I am older now, still young 😂, but just with everything I have seen in my lifetime, the destruction and devastation, all because this simple concept seems like such a difficult thing to accomplish? You are correct, there are those out there that use our differences to divide us, for their own purposes. I made a conscious choice a long time ago that I would not live my life that way. I do not judge, it was the first thing I recognized and removed. And believe me, in the South, I live in Oklahoma, I was the strange person in a crowd of many clueless people with very bad ideas. I believe it is possible but I also think that many will need to make a conscious decision in their life and decide how they want to be and how they choose to treat people. I might be one small person in this world but groups of small people multiplied over and over, it can make a difference. I love your reactions; you're a genuinely caring human being. To your dad's village: I spent 9 years in Ghana, from 2007-2016. Although I lived primarily in and around the capital of Accra, my most favored and most sublime memories are of the many, many, many times I sojourned in this village or that, maybe for a few days, but sometimes for months on end, villages where electricity, running water, indoor plumbing, were not only wholly absent, they were not even considered. Life is certainly more tough in the village, but people are ever so much more attuned to "life" in that environment. I met many an elder, those septua- and octogenarians who, though unelected, decided the consequences of this action or that, who, in groups, regardless of age or rank, were always greeted right to left - the right side being determined by wherever the newcomer entered the mix. My forever question was, why was (in 2007) Ghana's male life expectancy only 57 or so years when I kept meeting these ancients? It took me a while to put together the existence of these oldsters and the knowledge of infant mortality (primarily due to malaria, but to a whole host of other causes, too). If one has the good luck to live to adulthood in these poorer countries, one has a fairly decent chance of reaching old age. The trick is not to die when you're still a kid. Some of us are idealists, some of us are imbued with a healthy sense of realism, and some of us are realistic idealists, meaning, like me, someone who is all to well aware of the vagueries and vicissitudes of life but who nevertheless strives for that idealistic dream. If we ever give up, the pigs will control the farm, we will enter a Kafkaesque maze of endless threatening inanities, and our big brother will tell us with a straight face that what he said yesterday was never heard by us. Never give up the dream, Saeed. You are truly one of the rarest of beasts, a caring individual.

Hallo Saeed. Al veel goede artiesten hier op je kanaal. Mogelijks weet je al dat PTX ook de muziekscene van Kerst overheerst in the States. Niet dat het nu qua timing ok zit maar ze maakten over hun lp ‘Evergreen’. Een documentaire ‘the making of Evergreen’. Hier zie je hoe deze Grammy winnende groep in de studio samenwerken om ‘on the fly’ in een paar weken tijd een kerst lp te maken. Vooral de wijze hoe op een spontane wijze sommige arrangementen ontstaan is intrigerend. Naast hun life werk is dit zeer indrukwekkend. Groetjes van je landgenoot op 60 km van de kust.
